Nothing indicated he was a Ranger, especially a top Ranger. Looks like an asspull, like the entire final season.

Can someone explain what a Texas Ranger is and why this is a big deal

All my googling told me they were like state troopers or something, why is that special?

The character's job remained a mystery for the whole show until the finale, and it's just surprising that he's a Texas Ranger. It also goes against the plots of some episodes, but they obviously didn't keep this answer in mind throughout the whole series. It was just something extra they put in the finale. No one but autists really takes it that seriously.

He had a fake one to impress the ladies.

When you see cops show their badge, what card is next to it? Their departmental ID badge, right? But that card clearly states its a drivers licence. With no endorsments even, just plain old class c.

Hank still saved his dumbass countless times so did this reveal really matter?

I understand that, I just don't understand what a Texas Ranger is compared to other law enforcement.

you can't fake having that emblem on your license.

top enforcement for the state. above local police, if that makes sense.

Troopers deal with traffic shit. They are the top level traffic cops.

Rangers can write you a ticket but never would. They get lent out to smaller departments to help with huge cases. Like if a small town gets a murder. They also investigate fraud and serve at the will of the governor so he can use them for important investigations.

It seems exclusive to Texas, do other states have this?

They're a smaller specialized group of law enforcement officers with jurisdiction through the state. They're a bit like specialists that go out to support individual precincts or take on major cases. Mostly help with investigations and work with the Marshall service a lot.

I believe there's less than 200 in the whole state.

Not really, state police tend to fill it up somewhat but most states don't have the mixture of rural counties AND distance that Texas deals with. A lot of the cause for their existence are historical too.

Thanks m8s

Specialized law enforcement is so cool.

...

Boomhauer was secretly monitoring either Dale or Hank and was about to bust one of them

They also date back to before Texas was part of the US and still an independent country so they're still basically seen as badass cowboys. An unofficial phrase of the group is "One riot, one ranger."

Why not ? They never talked about his job Ive know texas rangers and none of them went around talking about how they were rangers.

Historically they were somewhat elite Texan soldiers tasked with kicking out hostile groups. Mexican bandits, Natives, etc.

Today they're basically an extraditionary police force that serves at the leisure of the govt. Sort of like how Federal Marshalls have free reign to assist and coordinate above local law enforcement. The Rangers have this same ability but limited throughout the state of Texas (one of the most populous states in the Union).

Because of their history, being a part of the Texas Rangers is seen as a very prestigious honor given to few exceptional law enforcement officials.

They also have a great degree of flexibility when not working a specific case, or whatnot, so it actually kind of fits retroactively with Boomhauer's character.

>it's a Lucky episode

>Their departmental ID badge, right?
I keep my badge in my wallet.

My agency credentials are fucking like 4"x5" I'm not carrying that shit around.

Not really. A few have special agents or detectives who work for the AG office or State Police, but afaik Texas is the only state with a dedicated agency.

Arizona used to have Rangers as well but they were absorbed in to the state police.

To people who don't know what makes it authentic, no.

HIs job was to keep an eye on Dale.
>Dale's conspiracy was real

There are several episode where him being in law enforcement should of came up. Especially the one where a character gets murdered. It would be weird to send a Ranger from out of town to investigate a murder when you have one living in the town.

>It's a Peggy episode

except for the episode where Boomhauer can't recognize a vial of cocaine

>it's a ladybird episode

Texas Rangers are the state investigative bureau, and a state-wide law enforcement agency.
Think of it as the FBI but only in Texas.

Other states have their own investigative bureaus, who act similarly.

>it's the episode where Hank thinks Ladybird has rabies
