I have nothing against mortars and rockets, but field shell artillery just seems outdated.

Mortars have shit range and are quite limited power wise, rockets are expensive as shit and slow to reload. They all have their places, field guns are for keeping large areas extremely hostile for enemy forces, mortars are better offensive tools. Rockets are well suited for both, but again that comes with a cost.

I guess if you want a prolonged ww1 style artillery barrage, but rockets seem to be able to output a lot more firepower in a short amount of time.

Yah, but I doubt you'l really need that in modern warfare. I mean it's not like you'r going to have infantry just march towards the enemy on foot in long lines. Could be wrong though.

I guess there's two things you might want to do with your artillery, shoot a lot in the shortest time possible to destroy shit or disrupt enemy action by shooting a lot in a longer period of time.
And the beauty of artillery is you can shoot just about anything with it, it doesn't matter if it's infantry or an armoured battallion, they're going to have a real bad time either way
