first came to Sup Forums 2014, knew about it years before but was always too scared to come here cos of the spooky stories on leddit xD

first came to /who/ during series 9

talked about the show with my buds on skype but they're all normies who havent even seen all of classic who or listened to any audios so i stopped talking to them

Started coming around 2010ish, stopped going for a while then started again in like 2015

Started going to /who/ after WEaT

Talked about it with some mates I used to have but I'm not friends with them anymore, sadly. Only know like one other guy that watches the show anymore and he's a bit of a cunt, and he doesn't watch the classics

I am twenty-two.
First time I came to Sup Forums...2006 I'd say. Very much not a regular user then though, but I was very into exploring the web since I was a kid.
I first came to /who/ in 2013. I've been coming on and off ever since.
Before coming here, I talked about the show the same place I still talk about it, in real life, to friends and family who watch as well.

As someone who's never listen to any of his audios or read his books, do they ever address the Eighth Doctor being half human?

>butterflyroom.gif
i gotcha

I found some of my old posts from when I used to namefig so at least jan of 2014 for visiting /who/

Not seriously. The only options for it are either, you do the story of his parentage (which ruins the mystery completely and probably ends being cringey as hell in the process since it involves the Doctor being the special chosen one with magic human DNA), or you try to "explain it away" in some utterly pathetic fashion that can at most amount to a throwaway joke. What's the point?

GallifreyBase

I can't recall his audios mentioning it. Maybe Zagreus. The most explicit mention I can think of wasn't even with 8, it was Me in Hell Bent.

Different days back then!

gorgeous!

Yup. Works better by just leaving it an odd old mystery.

wtf am I talking about. I was here before the 50th
>2013 was 40 years ago

Not sure about audios, because I haven't listened to them all yet, but I'm thirteen books into the EDAs and it's been mentioned in passing a few times. Different authors seem to have different opinions on it, with some outright saying that the human part of him is legit, others saying it's a mystery. I don't think any have outright denied it so far? At least not in a wholly conclusive way.

There's also some weird interpretations that say that it's only his eighth incarnation that has that "half-human" part, and all his other versions don't. Or, that would seem to be the implication at least.

Ultimately, it's just been a big *shrug* in general, and it's never been important enough to the plot in the EDAs (just yet, anyways - there's still a lot of them I've yet to read!) to be brought up or discussed at any length. I don't think it ever will be.

What's your personal take on it? Do you like the idea?

>*puts on sunglasses*
>Leave Zagreus to us!

I legit love the way it was alluded to in Hell Bent Nothing was confirmed or denied, it just made you think about it a little more.

I'm the user that asked originally, and when I saw the movie ages ago I always interpreted it that it was just Mcgann that was half human because of the medicine they gave him fucked his regeneration up

I love the mention of it in Hell Bent because it doesn't say if it's true or not and adds to the mystery of who the hybrid is

According to Unnatural History, the Doctor's past is in constant flux and he might or might not have been half human at one point but it doesn't really matter.
I think there are some actual explainations about his family in the very last EDA but I haven't read it yet.

You can probably still hear me, so just between ourselves, you've got the prophecy wrong. The 40th anniversary is not earkino. Nothing is earkino, Big Finish would never allow that. The clusterfuck destined to disappoint fans and bring Big Finish to ruins...is me

I'd get linked occasionally from other sites as early as 2006-2007 I think. Came to stay to around 2008 is, migrated to Sup Forums a bit after.
>when did you first come to /who/
I'm not sure if I was here for the first thread. I had an accident and didn't feel confident posting again until like 2014 and reapplied my trip soon there after, at the request of a few user because my aspieness was a bit much back then.
>where did you talk about the show before coming here
I really didn't. Occasionally IRL to a random in passing. I'd lurk outpost gallifrey but I'd never post. Posting anywhere seemed too social for me for a time. Faux-anonymity helped that a bit obviously.
Rude! I remember!
Not too terribly far from where I live now is a place called the butterfly house. It's an enclosed arboretum just filled with butterflies. It's pretty damned cool, although alot of them are moths and don't disclose it, so it's kinda bullshit, but it's still a lovely place.

Also I completed my story for Shit Trips Vol 2, and just need to put it on pastebin. Is someone around who can add it in?

cats

I'm neither for or against it, weirdly. I think it's interesting, and would certainly explain a lot about how connected the Doctor feels to earth and humans in general, but then I'd feel like it sorta takes away this idea that... he cares so much and for so many, even though by all accounts, he shouldn't feel the need to. Giving him a connection to humanity, whilst explaining his desire to protect it, almost detracts from the significance of the fact that he tries so hard to. Or rather, it takes on a totally different sort of significance. I hope that makes sense.

Eight is, in many ways, a lot more human than some of the other Doctors - but also, in other ways, a lot more alien. I think he's a good representation of that proposed sort of half-and-half scenario, with both sides being pushed to the extreme at times, and sometimes even being in direct opposition. It's an interesting character dynamic. Eight isn't necessarily unique for being like that, since it's all part of the Doctor's charm in general, but I do think he's a perfect exemplar of it.

So, basically: I don't mind whether or not he legitimately is half-human. I almost feel like I'd prefer he isn't, for reasons stated above, but ultimately it would make sense to me either way, so I don't question it as much. I just take the stance the Doctor has on it - he may or may not be, or have been, or will be, and ultimately, it doesn't really matter either way.

(As an aside, it's kinda weird, actually - the only Doctor I feel that it's utterly plausible for a Doctor/companion romance to happen, is with Eight. I always explain it as him being that bit more human than the others - hence the relevance of mentioning it here - but I don't know. Maybe it's just that his personality suits it better than most incarnations: he's that bit more romantic and innocent and happy and loving, and that sort of thing would come more naturally to him. But that's a whole other conversation to be had.)

aminoapps.com/page/doctor-who/9878804/the-curse-of-susan-foreman-chapter-1

Uhm, clarification of what I said at the end there: I didn't mean it's totally implausible for Doctor/companion romances to happen with other incarnations, since Ten/Rose (and Nine/Rose and all that) happened, so clearly it must be possible. I just meant that I felt it comes more naturally to Eight than with others. So, not trying to discredit anything or anyone if they support certain relationships or whatever.

>when did you first come to Sup Forums
I actually used to read the old stuff on chanarchive in like 2013 and I never really visited the main site. I always used to enjoy reading weird story threads, especially on /x/.

>when did you first come to /who/
I think between The Eaters of Light and World Enough & Time, although I didn't make my trip until much later.

>where did you talk about the show before coming here
I used to be a pretty popular commenter on DoctorWhoTV back 4 or 5 years ago, I kind of miss that community. More recently I've found home on the /r/gallifrey Discord, although I don't actually go on the subreddit itself.

She doesn't count. Plus she didn't really get into it until it started on BBC-A in marathons and would catch me watching several episodes of NuWho in a stretch. She's a nuWho baby for the most part, only seeing a half dozen or so classic serials in whole, and bits and peices of what I was watching in passing.

>Not too terribly far from where I live now is a place called the butterfly house.
There's a place like that near me, too. Although it's not exclusively butterflies - it's more built to be a sort of jungle sort of thing with all sorts of critters in it, but butterflies are the most obviously noticeable cus they're free-flying and they get right up in your face.

>alot of them are moths and don't disclose it
Hah! I bet a few "butterflies" in the Doctor's butterfly room are moths, too, actually. Moths can be really pretty, though, and the fluffy ones are utterly adorable.

Leave earkino to me

I can remind Immigrant if he doesn't see your post himself.

I appreciate your indepth answers as always! Your first paragraph really sums up the whole dilemma of it. I lean towards liking it but I think a lot of why might be because I saw the TV movie when I was really really young, so it might have kind of 'imprinted' on me and made the idea normal for me from the get go.

I agree 8 suits romance with a human companion much better than most Doctors too. I think a few suit Time Lord romance well though (12/Missy, 4/Romana, 1/presumable wife). 6 and 12 have good chemistry with River but i d k what to categorise her as.

What's their discord like?

Unrelated but I'm intrigued by how came to /x/ in 2008

Moths freak me out, too many where I live, and they all come right at my face, it's a nightmare

Charley has some of the best companion breasts but never appears in live action. Shad.

I think someone posted a link to an ARG that was being either run or broken down in a thread on that was being assisted by and maybe or other boards anyway. I was really kinda blown away and impressed by the ability to coordinate logistically on the fly, and send ground teams out to search for whatever was being geocached. Ability to identify places in pictures on say a thumb drive dropped at coordinates send out teams or groups to whatever, continent wide. Back in the day legit solved mysteries. It wasn't always roleplaying and dogmen and alex jones.

...

>What's their discord like?

I love it, although I may be a little biased since I mod it. Either way I do really love the community there. Most of the time.

Well I do make Belle wear a hijab occasionally and I don't care for pork but the headware is just for playtime.

Newfag from 2015, like many here, my perception was the ebin boogeyman stories I had heard about here, started out in Sup Forums cause edge and all didn't think I'd find my self at home so quick. That didn't last long though since it was mostly porn threads there.

>2
Not long after, I discovered /who/ which was the day "Face the Raven" aired. I ventured into Sup Forums thinking, "someone has to have made a thread" even though I didn't really think I'd find such a thriving community here out of all places. I still remember the name of the thread, 'Dead as a nail edition'.

Huh, what's that from?

>I appreciate your indepth answers as always!
I'm always happy to ramble about Eight, as you well know. Always thankful for when I get the opportunity! Ultimately, everyone's free to have their own opinion on the half-human thing - I've never fully understood people who are determined to shoot the possibility down entirely. If someone wants to believe it's true, then more power to them. As much as it changes up the dynamic the Doctor has with humanity, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some people might actually prefer that he protects us so much because he has that deeper connection, and that's all good. The concept that the Doctor is (in some distant way) family to us, is a lovely idea.

>I think a few suit Time Lord romance well though (12/Missy, 4/Romana, 1/presumable wife)
I agree wholeheartedly, with all those pairings too. For most incarnations, no romance at all is preferable for me, but for certain ones - like those listed - I feel that, if any romance would work, it'd be with another Time Lord. So, to me, Eight is a bit of an outlier in that his most suitable romantic pairing would be with a human over anything else. I think one of the reasons he suits that sort of relationship is that he's a much more vulnerable incarnation than any other. Whilst all the Doctors require some TLC at some point throughout their time - particularly in nu!who - I notice that Eight is the one that welcomes it and needs it much more than most. The dynamic with others is a sort of "the Doctor looks after his companions and they occasionally give him a hug when he's sad or calm him down when he's angry" (really simplified, I know) - whereas with Eight, the duty of care thing is very mutual. Heck, there's even a little scene where Sam wanders into his room and finds him asleep in the bath tub with all his rubber ducks, and she has to wake him up and get him to bed. I can't imagine that scene being as tender as it was with any other Doctor in Eight's place, weirdly.

You know, I don't have a fucking clue, user. It's from the filming of the tv movie, of course. The baby is Paul McGann's son. I've yet to find the source - I think I'm just stupid, probably, so I bet I'm overlooking it when it's somewhere obvious - but I suspect it'll be in a behind the scenes segment somewhere.

>Eight is a moron

Goddamn, The Magician's Apprentice missed a trick by not including some audio of the 8/Davros confrontation from Terror Firma, it would have fit perfectly. They included clips from 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10, but 8's would have fit perfectly.

>The concept that the Doctor is (in some distant way) family to us, is a lovely idea.
I know some people go further and theorise the Time Lords are future humans and stuff like that, there's a lot of ways people try to reconcile those sorts of things.

> So, to me, Eight is a bit of an outlier in that his most suitable romantic pairing would be with a human over anything else. Totally. It's interesting that for all the 9~10/Rose romance, they barely ever actually touch, and when they do it's usually like you say, them comforting her.

11/River always played weirdly to me because he didn't seem into physical touch at all.

Oh man I'd be so stoked

>Fancy to compare them to here? Similarities, differences, positives, negatives?

Sure!

>Similarities
Most of the opinions are generally the same. It tends to be Moffat-leaning and mostly pro-Jodie. I know quite a few of the members visit here and the wiki occasionally, but not really post.

>Differences
With this being Sup Forums and all, it's a little less... anarchy. Obviously there's nowhere near as much bait and opinions tend to be more articulated than shitposty, but again I think that's just a general difference between Sup Forums and the rest of the internet.

>Positives
Mostly it's the community I go there for, really. There's also rewatches every weekend (watching the first and last stories of each Doctor, with one episode of said Doctor in the middle selected by vote) in the run up to Christmas.

>Negatives
All discussion of Jodie is kept to a spoiler channel, which I personally don't mind, although obviously it'd probably annoy some people. There's also the occasional casual fan who'll come in (although they never really stay for long) and unironically post shit memes. There's also the occasional argument there too, the most recent of which involved the closure of the dedicated shitpost channel.

In all, it's likely a little more Reddit than Sup Forums in terms of humour, so if you really don't like that then it's not really the place for you.

Probably started visiting Sup Forums about 2010/11
Got into DW mid 2011
may have started visiting /who/ around 2012/13
This has been the only place i come for discussions and laughs
mostly lurk though, but contribute fron time to time

It's deeply unlikely that they'll ever directly sample audio material from a Big Finish production. It's probably five minutes more rights-managing than they can be arsed with.

>but not really post.
How come?

>it's likely a little more Reddit than Sup Forums in terms of humour
gross

>There's also the occasional argument there too, the most recent of which involved the closure of the dedicated shitpost channel.
Oh man, that sounds so stuffy. Do they have arguments similar to ones we have on /who/ sometimes?

>himself
UMMMMMM

Yeah I know I know :( But it would have fit really, really well, and it was a rare chance it could work since the episode was already sampling audio (like the Name of the Doctor timestream).

>But it would have fit really, really well
Would there have been any point to it, though? The only archive material that we actually needed to hear more than a couple of words from was the conversation from Genesis which directly pertained to the plot.

The scene could have been done without any archive material at all, the point of the clips could have been done quickly in exposition with 12 and Davros, I'm just saying it would have fit nicely and been neat to see (hear).

>How come?
Not sure, really. Presumably they don't have the same sort of shitposty humour.

>Do they have arguments similar to ones we have on /who/ sometimes?
Ehhh, not really. Mostly it's about shit like Jodie from users who haven't been there long and don't like the thought of a woman being in their show.

>It's interesting that for all the 9~10/Rose romance, they barely ever actually touch, and when they do it's usually like you say, them comforting her.
Yeah, exactly. That's not a bad thing, of course! For some people, that sort of dynamic is interesting and it works and it's what they'd like from such a relationship. Personally, I don't think the Rose thing was that well written, and I think that even with a Doctor so perfectly suited to human romances as Eight, any companion relationship needs a specific sort of nuance to it, wherein it's not just some overstated romantic thing, but rather an unspoken sort of dedication and care and implicit trust - at least, that's just works well for me. I know others will feel differently. The Rose romance didn't fit that mould, so I never quite gelled with it, and it was never really believable for me from the Doctor's end of things. I could totally get why Rose would fall head-over-heels for the Doctor, but RTD never, ever sold me on the reverse. My personal interpretation for that almost desperate attachment the Doctor formed at the time was in part because of the guilt and isolation and self-hatred that manifested as a result of his actions during the Time War. Then suddenly he meets this girl, and she looks at him like he's the stars themselves, and she makes him forget sometimes, what he became and what the mistakes he made. She makes him think that sometimes, just sometimes, he can be the hero that she believes him to be. So he ends up attached to her because he becomes almost... intoxicated, by that sort of self-perception. Of course, he likes her as a person, but the mental state he was in following the Time War kind of amplified everything, made it much more than it would've been if he had been a bit more stable upon meeting her. Which is why their dynamic is somewhat unequal, because in many ways, he's larger than life to her. Again: this is just my interpretation. Always. Everyone's free to their own.

reee ran out of room

>11/River always played weirdly to me because he didn't seem into physical touch at all.
That pairing never worked for me, honestly. 12/River played more interestingly, in part because River at the time we saw her with him was... much more mature. A lot calmer, less in-your-face, and that personality suited 12 a lot. I really enjoyed her in The Husbands of River Song, and I'm sad we didn't get more of that River, because she played off of Capaldi's Doctor very well.

11/River was just... weird, because she was so physical and sexual, I guess, and 11 was always so childlike, it just rubbed me the wrong way. They weren't a good combination, I think, and we never really saw River played to her strengths as a result of it. She can be an excellent and interesting character when she's got a good dynamic with the Doctor going on.

Do you consider yourself a /who/ mole in the r/gallifrey discord, or a r/gallifrey discord mole in /who/?

I like your reading of the Doctor and Rose. What do you think of the actual 'half-human' meta10 Rose goes off to live with in the end?

I'm really interested what you'll think of 8/Charley too, when you eventually get there.

I think sadly Matt and Alex just never really kind of got any chemistry together, whereas Peter and Alex did right away. That's hard to write around.

6/River work together really well i m o, in her audios, but naturally we can't 'see' any physical chemistry in those.

>Do you consider yourself a /who/ mole in the r/gallifrey discord, or a r/gallifrey discord mole in /who/?

Hm, that's a tough one. In some ways, both really. I found out about /who/ via the Discord (and I was already good friends with Immigrant on Discord before even realising it was him).

not if series 10 was in 2016 and series 11 (with capaldi staying on) was in 2017

>Shadman

So, if he'd willingly chosen to do an entire additional series. A choice that both Tennant and Smith also rejected.

Wtf Immigrant's betrayed /who/ too!?!? You've secretly been bezzie mates with Immigrant for ages???

and then changed his mind out of nowhere

>capaldi said at first that he would stay on for a 4th series
no he didn't

It was a secret to both of us! I'd been talking with him since before I made my trip.

who else betrayed/who/ and how?

>tfw lymerence and immigrant have literally admitted to being redditors and noone is reacting

Science Fiction is perhaps the genre I loathe above all others. The idea that you can take hard scientific fact, and then fictionalise it turning genuine achievement and discovery into mild fantasy fodder is very much distressing. I suggest you read about some real science, works of pioneers and geniuses who have helped us better understand the true reality of the world and not some infantile drivel that is as much a part of science as The Bible.

Oh no. Whatever will we do.

Nah, I don't use reddit really. I have an account but I rarely post.
