I feel like the close-knit feeling of family and ties of blood does more to foster trust and loyalty among an organization's members. They are more likely to achieve Pareto efficient outcomes because of this.
The strict hierarchical nature of a lot of southern gangs helps streamline the functions of day-to-day operations, and thus profit. But there is not much incentive to forego one's inherent self-interest for the greater good of the organization if there is no familial ties.
