The attitude of not having kids is a product of societal comfort and bad parental/media guidance. People don't understand that life isn't about buying cool things and taking cool vacations. At its core, its finding a mate and having healthy offspring. You're literally hardwired to do that. The whole point of sex and love is to do both of those things. Its what drives men to want to provide for and women to want to care for. Every progressive 20 something that goes "lol kids" is a hedonist at heart. And i feel sorry for them because getting your vasectomy at 22 might feel cool now but at 40 you are going to be miserable and not really know why.

It'll get better man. My wife and I have a 4 and 2 yo and in the beginning it really put a lot of stress on us but we came out stronger and now that they are older its seriously the best thing ever. Our friends are all childless or single right now but their lives really don't seem great at all. They don't vacation, they don't have nice things, they slave at work. Even with two kids the wife and I take a vacation twice a year. Been all over (most other countries are shit, if you never leave america you're not missing much). I don't know how to explain it but once I became a dad the things that made me happy before felt so meaningless. I'm actually a little embarrassed of my life before being a parent.

I'm in my late 20s now and have known all along that I would never have kids. To me, life is suffering, there is no point in having kids. I don't care about some primal, primitive purpose of life like perpetuating my genes or DNA. Life, itself, here and now, is suffering. To survive, one being lives off another. At every moment, our existence hangs by a thread, dependent on so many other factors. Everything in life is impermanent, all we love slips through our fingers. I feel so much pain imagining my own father's death, how can I burden my own child with that depth of love for me? I have the chance to stop it. It means dying alone, which seems to take guts to face in thought alone, what to say of actually doing it? Many people have kids just to have them crowding their deathbed. It's fear and I'm not afraid. What bothers me is the thought that I SHOULD have kids - why? What for? To give them a life of misery like I've had? When you're intelligent and sensitive, life can be brutal, even living an ordinary existence without any extreme tragedies or problems. I'm definitely NOT a hedonist, I'm not not having kids so that I can enjoy my life, I'm not having kids so I can spare them the suffering I've felt and feel. I have no reasons to have kids and many reasons not to have kids. So far, although I've been very open to it, nothing has managed to sway my opinion on this and convince me that I should have kids.

many kids abandon their parents around the age of 18-22 and only come back (reluctantly) for holidays. you might not, i might not, but many do, and they certainly don't come back in saint mode to wipe asses. that's a parental delusion; in reality, when you're old and your legs fail you, it becomes incredibly hard even for a loving close family to help you on a daily basis. ever tried lifting up a 200lbs human who can't help themselves off the floor? fact is, most people reluctantly get placed in nursing homes. better advice would be to take care of your health and legs so you can still move around by yourself in old age. also, burdening your kids with wiping your ass is hardly a good argument in favor of procreation! have kids, so they can be your slaves when you're older! so they can cry in private thinking about how awful this life cycle is, knowing they have to burden their own children to do the same thing! breed today, folks!

Well, to be fair, your perspective is totally biased by the fact that you do have kids and a wife; you have to look at things that way, basically. Those same childfree friends might think you're the one missing out on something great, and that's their bias. So, while we're here and we have people on either side of this debate, can I raise a few talking points that might be of interests?
What I think about as someone in my late 20s who has seen old friends get married and have kids, or seen it with my siblings and so on, is that for the most part they were all accidental pregnancies that resulted in the snowball effect leading up to marriage, moving in together, etc and basically altering their lives into full on parent mode. They didn't want to abort, so they buckled down and fused their families together for the kids. None of them are "happy" in some magical sense. Greater responsibilities, less free time... invariably, it's severely altered their lives. Of course, they love their kids, so they think it's all worth it.
But what bothers me is... why, exactly, should I have kids? Just put aside evolutionary arguments for a second, put aside the notion that the "meaning" or "purpose" of life is to procreate, since we're not just animals purely driven by instincts, we can override our instincts with our intelligence, just as I have refrained from impregnating anyone in all my years. What would I be having kids for? To give them a few years at home, force them into school, force them to get jobs by 18... etc? Why? What if I find this life inherently unsatisfactory and full of suffering? Why exactly would I then create another being with my likeness to suffer through it all over again?
I feel like I've just reached the age where I've toughened up somewhat to life, where it's not constantly unbearable suffering, so how could I look at my son throughout his youth and see him suffering as I did, knowing it's all for nothing, just to get him trapped in the same cycle with his own kids? What is this madness for? Is it a race to the finish, last race standing before the big crunch, last genetic line remaining? I just don't get it.

If someone is going out of their way to try and prove to you their life is better without kids, they're really trying to prove it to themselves (overcompensating). If someone is legitimately happy, they probably don't really care whether you know it or not and thus aren't going to just put it out there for you to see like the previous insecure people. That's probably why you don't see it. I mean you have people in this thread right now telling you they're childless and feel happy. What more do you want? Sounds like you just don't want to see/accept it.

The only point I'm trying to outline is that it's perfectly normal and achievable to have a fun, fulfilling life with children if that's is your goal. I'm not saying that it has to be your goal. I'm not saying that having other goals is bad. I'm simply arguing against the idea that children completely ruin a persons life and any chances at being happy and doing great things. I'm not convinced a persons life was made better by skipping parenthood because I've never seen that scenario in real life. That person or couple could exist somewhere. The only examples of childless couples or singles I have around me to look at and compare are my friends. It's my perception that their lives are worse than mine. That's it.
