The source material kinda sucks. The first section anyway, maybe it gets better after Ipkiss.

there's several limited series, even one where the joker gets the mask, but it just sort of repeats the same plot: the mask is an id machine that make's you super violent and nigh invincible

he's only vulnerable when the Mask is off, in the comics he realized how badly he was being influenced by it and the second he removed it his girlfriend shot him in the back and stole it.
also the comic is edgy as fuck.

Check it out. I'm really glad it went the comedy route and not the horror route, that said Sam Raimi could have probably pulled it off.
