I think you severely underestimate the devastation wrought on past and present attempts at socialism by corruption.
It would be incredibly easy for a country to make money providing services they own.
Take for example a national broadband network, extremely expensive to set up, but owned and operated by government it could be kept cheap and running at a profit, seeing returns on investment during the lifetime of the service.
Take now what actually happens: we sell this network for quick cash, whilst still having to pay for repairs.
The network is managed with absurd inefficiency by the private sector and prices rise while the service gets worse.
We then buy back the service, upgrade/side grade and fully repair it, then give it back to the private sector.
The cycle repeats.
So instead of making money with the socialist method, we drink the capitalist free market coolaid and find ourselves obligated to an ever growing parasite, leaching us dry.
There are so many examples of this in just about every conceivable sector it goes so far beyond riotously unacceptable that it's utterly debilitating.
