Took the train from Hung Hom to Lo Wu, waled into the border office/ train station once you get to the chinese side check point go up stairs and get the visa there. No preplanning needed, although I did have a hostel booked in Futian

in Shenzhen? I have no Chinese and got on fine. Only met 2 "locals" who spoke some English, zero English in restaurants and bars but the subway is in English so getting around is fine just be sure to check if someone from your country has got that visa before because I have heard that if you have stamps from certain countries (Turkey) they wont let you in. Also watch out for the scammers on the Chinese side of Lo Wu
