European colonization in sub Saharan Africa was delayed until the 19th century and the introduction of quinine as an anti-malarial, before that time any European settlement would have failed. As it is disease remained one of the big obstacles to colonization even after. There was no such problem in the Americas tho ironically enough diseases like Malaria and Dengue were introduced by Europeans through the African slave trade.
