The US has tricky asylum laws. If they fall under the right rules, we wouldn't have a choice in accepting them. The trick is blocking them from landing on US soil in the first place, which is what our Coast Guard would do with Cubans.
The issue here is Mexico granting these people an easy land entry into the country with little that we can do to stop it. This is all intentional.

Also consider that these people is equivalent of taking hundreds of thousands of criminals in jail for terms that could be life, for murder rape drug dealing etc. And then putting them directly out on the street with the average person..
