I'd say there's no real relation between effort and time for youtube for most popular channels. I'd say Vsauce puts in a lot of research effort, the Primitive Technology guy, Molymeme, some of those channels. However most of the popular ones are just based on the youtuber's charisma. They're not spending hours on their videos.
Depends what your idea is but a lot of popular youtubers who get to the top on their content tend to mix informative content with entertainment to capture a market that was otherwise not getting viewership at all.

Depending on your local council you only get a certain number of "hard rubbish" collections per year so if you want to get rid of something big or just a bunch of things you actually have to pay or go through the hassle of having a garage sale which doesn't guarantee you'll get rid of anything and if its actual junk nobody will want it anyway. Plus if what they're throwing out isn't complete junk you could then ebay it. So there's definitely money in your idea.
