I don't think the feminist boogeyman has anything to do with it but game studios are trying to be "relatable" while being out of touch with everything, so that's why they include characters like Sera based on what the cool kids were doing at the time; on the other hand cdprcared more about the characters as a medium to tell a story than trying to have more sales while "appealing" to common denominators
