It doesn't help that most of the hard "right-wing" facets of media, alternative or mainstream, kept pushing this narrative of "don't trust (them)"... which resulted in a lot of people growing into this pseudo-anti-intellectual bent (if not full-blown disavowal of anything resembling any sort of integrity or credence whatsoever), which is certainly justifiable if you pay attention to how left most institutions are. Which then fueled the other side's response to this select breed of right-wing ideology/state of mind, prompting it's own "I only believe the [true] sources I can verify!" mentality.
And how trendy it is to hate on people who happen to be right-wing.
Which is a shame, honestly, but... there's more than one reason to all of this. We can't just pick our favorite conclusions and pretend that the rest of the nuances aren't valid and are none of our concern- that would be ironic and unfortunate. Feelings matter, but so do facts.

They aren't mutually exclusive, even though it's rare that someone will actually realize that they can work a job -and- get an education if they come from a NEET-level background. Granted, nobody is exactly going to go get their Nobel Prize while working at a lumber mill (except that one guy).
A job in Civil engineering won't teach you about particle physics, heart surgery, musical instruments, specific tangents of history, taxonomy, or pharmaceuticals. But, a job in Civil engineering will teach you a lot about how things physically work and are meant to work in our respective societies/regions (think architect, material science, or control systems like power plants), and otherwise, purpose (regarding the many places you can go/things you may have to interact with on the job at any given point in time).

Simple answer is that the prevailing politics dominating higher education will always be the prevailing politics of those who graduate, because part of the function of education is indoctrination. This function is arbitrary; if the institutions were fascist, the graduates would tend to be fascist in their politics. Entryism by leftist turned the universities leftist in the last half of the 20th century. Prior to that, most graduates were conservative, thus, the stereotype of Ivy League graduates being conservative, etc.
These things are obvious to anyone with half a brain.

Republicans have votes from lower IQ and highest IQ. Liberals are in the bottom to middle, more so in the middle.
It's because low IQ republicans see it for what it is while also holding American traditionalism at heart. Illegal immigrants are illegal for instance. Hillary is a criminal. Different from democrat low IQ who are voting because race baiting or welfare.
Middle IQ see for what it what it could be. Hillary hasn't been convicted so she isn't a criminal. Hillary has more experience, means she's good for the job.
High IQ see for what it can be and for what t is. Hillary has experience but experience doesn't relay into performance nor does it mean that experience was good (Libya). Hillary hasn't been convicted because the system is protecting her, see Lynch and Bill roundabout on the air plane, see leaks showing corruption.
High IQ liberals can be the victim of their own social standards. IQ doesn't translate into being an individual, so their case could be a social pressure because it's not hard to connect the dots. Also they might not be doing the snooping of information that the media isn't, like wikileaks. It also is a question of holding American values and nationalism, of which IQ doesn't necessarily have correlation within.
