I agree OP. I think people don't understand how comics, being a visual and writing medium, NEED things to be a little more aesthetic or it gets boring for the reader.
Have you read Scott McCloud's Understading Comics? He explains this very well. That doesn't mean that non-cape stuff is bad. That stuff just needs a chance, like the mange you talked about, to find it's footing and audience. Writers and artists need to not be afraid of the medium and let their creative side go wild. With a comic book, you're controlling everything, the camera angles, the characters, the dialogue, the story.
There is so much potential to great so much stuff.
