its pretty damn good

Yes

Is the story Travis tells at the end real? Or was he delusional?

reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1jr8ai/i_am_paul_schrader_writer_of_taxi_driver/cbhhyo0/?context=3
It was real.

yes
it deserves higher than 8.3

What makes it so good? Ive never seen it, only heard of it a bunch, i was planning on watching it in a little bit and wanted to see what people think about it on here

Its a perfect movie for /r9k/+Sup Forumsacks.

It's legit one of the best films ever made man. Watch it. If you are posting on this board you will love it.

It's basically Notes From Underground but the film.

it depends. do you enjoy cringe? it's got scenes that rival the cringiest moments of Noah Baumbach, Jody Hill, and Ricky Gervais

I hate cringe, so I don't feel the need to ever watch Taxi Driver ever again.

What do you mean? Like when he takes a date to a porno theater?

Define cringe in this situation, like "oh shit that was terrible to look at" or "god this fucking loser needs to stop talking"

yes, like that
see

Eh, it's okay. Watch Baby Driver instead. It's much better.

Better yet just watch Taxi starring Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah

I love Baby Driver but fuck this post. This genuinely triggered me.

Why? What's the problem?

They're two different films you fuck. I can definitely see the themes you would see similarities in between them but they are no where close to the same film.

Never said they were similar.

>They're two different films you fuck.

>he's one of those fags

it's my favorite film

user btfo just go to bed already grandpa, nobody cares anymore about your shitty black and white films

Holy fucking shit I never see this mentioned.

A fact about me: Taxi is the LAST film I ever saw in theaters, and the second to last was The Day After Tomorrow that came out that same year. Still have the stubs.

Yes. It blew away my expectation half way through.

It's basically Sup Forums the movie

Watch it and find out nerd.

damn bruh thats so sick hearing it from his own mouth

youtube.com/watch?v=X4wsSRpKXNU

i get chills watching this shit again. movies so good.

I love that Jazz soundtrack so much

>has a job and pursues a relationship with an attractive female
...???

its so new york 1970's its so scorcese.

fun factoid the composer died hours after finishing it

youtube.com/watch?v=rDgXeYlpbOE
that's about the dumbest thing I ever heard

I feel like kind of a pleb to ask that, but what is the meaning of the ending (according to any of you, at least). I always took it as that he was just playing it cool to impress her, but the ending shot shows he hasn't changed and still craves attention

Robert De Niro isn't even the best part. He's as fucking wooden as Keanu Reeves in this movie.

Jodie Foster is kino as fuck though

It is an excellent film. Not Scorcese's best direction, but certainly Schrader's best script.

I always interpreted it that he's actually still lying there slowly bleeding to death from the gunshot wound, and the final scene is merely him imagining how he's going to be perceived by everyone for his "heroic act." I still believe this interpretation btw. The writer may have intended otherwise, but I believe Scorcese included several clues that support my interpretation.

same. just having it be real is boring af lol

youtube.com/watch?v=lQkpes3dgzg
>this is wooden

did you rike it?

youtube.com/watch?v=_szlzh9Dgrw

It really romanticizes loneliness.

youtube.com/watch?v=cmDgfzpKw5w

What does it lose by not being a dream sequence. I know if it is a dying dream it shows how messed up his perception of the world and him was but we already knew this. Also if he really thought he was still a hero after killing them then why did he try and kill himself. I think his suicide attempt changes everything. His sated eyes while gesturing suicide in front of the cops shows his desire to be free of his mind and the world. For a moment he is released from his obsessive worldview and feels intense relief.

While it isn't a dream sequence we still get the same obscure misperception of what happened but this time its shared by the world. The television version had the disclaimer: "To our Television Audience: In the aftermath of violence, the distinction between hero and villain is sometimes a matter of interpretation or misinterpretation of facts. "Taxi Driver" suggests that tragic errors can be made. The Filmmakers." This supports the fact that the world genuinely perceives Travis as a hero. Hes still out there, blending into crowds; I think the ending is showing that there is or could be a lot more like him out there. Damaged men construed as heros.

was it a dream sequence Sup Forums?

youtube.com/watch?v=-4GsCEopbd4

Yes, everything is a dream sequence. Dream sequences elevate every story. Dream sequences are very original and impressive user.

There MULTIPLE evidence that the first half is a dream while Tony is in the camp and the second half a dream within the dream. Even more evidence and clues support the theory, the push it to the limit montage is all three Tonys (Tony in the camp, Tony in the first half dreamed by Tony in camp and 2nd half Tony dreamed by 1st half Tony) simultaneously interacting within a shared dream.

How did go OVER your head, dude?

A film women will never understand

The music is like the soundtrack to the movie that is his life his life. Travis sees himself as this romanticized lone cowboy James Dean type figure - the only "good guy" left in a world of filth and degeneracy - and the movie shows us the world as he sees it

This film is pure trash. I believe this film was part of a conspiracy to trigger the assassination of the president who was Gerald Ford at the times. And guess who was vice president at that time? Nelson Rockefeller, the brother of the infamous bankster David.
Other than that i see no explanation for the hype. It's the story of a total loser who decides to kill a politician to become somebody, and when he does, the woman he was digging actually falls in love with him. This looks like it's just in his head but the film pushes a vicious and dangerous agenda.

It loses luster after you learn how big a yuppie faggot De Niro is.

It's good, but I can't rewatch it. His interactions with the lady are too fucking cringey, even if it's intentional.

They're also completely pointless.

it's about loneliness

DEPLOYING HEARTBEAT SENSOR

This baka

More like about mental ilness, and it's certainly the only movie about this topic. Like I said there is no reason this movie go hyped that much

It's about ptsd and adjusting to normal life after the war. He was a vietnam vet who couldn't connect anymore to normal society.

>This film is pure trash.

stopped reading there you philistine

Loneliness feels really good.
Other times it feels like your head is on fire and you want to grab a serrated blade and cut your throat open to make it all stop.
But god damn, why does being alone and doing whatever you want whenever you want, and only having to think about yourself feel so good senpai?
:////

The shoot out scene at the end is the single coolest thing I've ever seen in my entire life. I don't know how to explain what I mean by that.

Travis Bickle is LITERALLY me

Wow - hmm.. I've never connected the two before.

GOAT

this but unironically

it feels real thats why

Nice to know there's other guys like me out there

i remember when it had like an 8.7 at imdb. what the fuck happened?

>Go as Travis Bickle to Halloween party, mohawk and all
>Everyone asks if I'm Top Gun

Fuck normies they should all die

it's not a very PC LGBT friendly film

its just a raw ass scene, shot on film not digital, not like these movies today. no cgi, no overproduced edits and cuts. no shitty special effects.

With how much money is thrown at films these days I'm surprised no one tries to take a more practical approach to violent scenes like this film from the 70's

the only thing that sucks about it is they had to fuck up the colors severely to make the blood less red so they could get it past the strict 1976 censors. Everything suddenly looks all washed out / brown-tinted as soon as he pulls up to the the whore house in his cab. IIRC they lost the original film recording for that scene too, so they can *never* fix it

Don't see the appeal to be honest. Maybe I'm just not enough of a lonely autist to "get it".

>You're gonna be my friend?

Fuck

both girls were top-tier qts in this film, I don't know why scorsese casted ugly women for the rest of his films

Why did the music get all distorted when he noticed the mirror? What was the significance of him adjusting it like that?

kill yourself

Killing a bunch of people to save a child prostitute did not actually "make him better." That's all.

I stikl think it is stupid how the writer and director claim this is not a dream.

Just go watch it. The hell else are you doing with your time?

And then go marathon the rest of scorcese's old stuff. You know you want to.

I'm probably gonna get a lotta shit for this post but tho film is a lot like First Blood in the fact that it addressed the issue of people who went overseas and fought for this country only to come back and be treated like shit.

Both Travis Bickle and John Rambo were veterans of the Viet Nam war, both felt that their country either forgot them or disrespected them, or both. Both men have a certain sense of justice, and will risk their lives to set things right.

Of course that's where the similarities end.

All and all, I like both films equally.

Why should you get shit for that?
Travis' character is definitely one whose been influenced by his time before and after service. Great comparison.

whom's

it only feels good in retrospect, i find
