shhh... /who/ is sleeping
JUST A REMINDER THAT ZA IS NO LEADER!
Doctor Who is dead.
Why don't more people know about Kroton, /who/? I feel like after WEaT/TDF, it's a perfect time for him to make the jump from comic companion to fully canon TV companion
Okay, /who/ is sleepy, but anyways: some more EDA thoughts.
>Revolution Man
I enjoyed this story on the whole - it was different, and interesting, and there was a few really comfy moments in it. It got a bit weird towards the latter half, but not necessarily in a bad way because the ending really packed a punch. I spoke about it a bit earlier, but essentially, the choice the Doctor has to make is an impossible one, and it's horrible and it's sad and it's brutal, but as much as the decision was controversial, it didn't feel out of character or out of place. In fact, it opened up possibilities for a bit of development in regards to the subject matter. But it was, on the whole, a "holy shit did he really just do that" moment, and that'll be what sticks in my mind about this book. Also, one really lovely little line: "He took her hand, and they walked back to the console room like that, hand in hand, old friends, and the calendar ticking away the days until the end of the world."
>Dominion
This one had a pretty interesting story, involving pocket dimensions and wormholes and a race on the brink of extinction. Then thrown into the mix, Sam gets dragged off to god knows where and the TARDIS gets destroyed from the inside. Maybe there were a few things that weren't strictly necessary to the overall story and could've been trimmed a bit, and the Doctor's strange behaviour towards one of the side characters is never quite explained, but on the whole I enjoyed it. I don't have much to say other than to point out the kisses: I know my wiki page says I ship Eight/Fitz (because I do), and the Doctor kissed him in this book (which was cute) but at this point they still don't really know each other that well. Eight/Sam is where it's at, and this book had a bunch of really, really good moments for them (also the sweetest kiss ever) and probably a very blatant acknowledgement that the Doctor is quite a bit in love with her. 10/10 book just for that.
NO SPACE, see next post!
>Unnatural History
I can see why this is always pointed out as one of the highlights of the EDAs. It was an emotional rollercoaster. The plot was a bit bizarre, a bit intriguing, and dealt with story elements on such a grand scale. The Faction Paradox stuff was so interesting, and I'll not talk too much about all of that because I don't want to spoil the twists for anyone. I read this book all in one go, and I'm glad I did. Oh, and BOY WAS IT INAPPROPRIATE. None of the books have gotten this blatantly... sexual, before. And certainly not with the Doctor involved. I almost felt scandalised, reading it.
Anyways, I know Unnatural History gets highlighted a lot as one of the few EDAs "worth" reading in the initial half of the series, but having read it, that almost annoys me. So much of the book focuses on Sam, and as much as it works well enough as a standalone - the plot is interesting, and it doesn't lean too heavily on past context - I feel like one would really miss out on a lot of the emotional impact had they not just spent the past 22 books invested in Sam's development and individuality, and particularly her relationship to the Doctor. Of course, the majority of it deals with an alternate version of her that's new even to seasoned readers, but to really understand the significance of that from the perspective of the Doctor - and even Fitz - you'd really have to have read previous books too.
But, that all aside? I loved how this novel played with the idea of uncertain futures and even more uncertain pasts. How could you ever know a memory really happened? How can you be sure it's not just you rememebering solely because you think that you should? How would you know? If something exists only in your memory, then would that not make you the leading authority on its authenticity? On a meta level, it's a pretty interesting thing for the Eighth Doctor specifically, but also applies to the character as a whole.
10/10, you've done it again, OrmanBlum.
>I feel like one would really miss out on a lot of the emotional impact had they not just spent the past 22 books invested in Sam's development and individuality, and particularly her relationship to the Doctor
You say that, but Unnatural History was my first 8 novel, and hooked me enough to make book 8 one of my favorite Doctors, and made me like Sam enough to include her in my framing story.
>The Taint
I probably worded it badly, but I didn't necessarily mean that it lacked emotional impact entirely, just that... well, if you've spent so many hours with the character beforehand, experiencing her development up to that point, the events of the book would inevitably mean that bit more to you than to someone totally new to the EDAs, meeting Sam for the first time.
Or, well, not specifically the development of Sam, seeing as the book doesn't feature her in her "original" form much at all, but... the development of her relationship with the Doctor, primarily. As much as the book does well to establish how things are with them, having the extra context of everything they've been through together up to that point really added to my understanding of the how the Doctor himself might be dealing with the situation.
I can get why it'd be a book that'd intrigue a new reader, but there really isn't much opportunity to understand who Sam originally was, and just how different this alternative version is, beyond statements from other characters and the brief chapters featuring the original version. (That said, there's enough to get a basic idea, which is all that's technically needed.)
So, you know, it's an excellent book, and has enough emotional weight even as a standalone, but I just personally feel that already having that connection to the characters and their dynamics added to my overall experience of it.
despite saying i think its gross, you are correct i would do that.
...
so what was the deal with the wolf drinking tea in the 7B intro? it was about rose right?
I'm watching Power of the Daleks and you guys were right, Victory of the Daleks is a complete ripoff of this story
I went and rewatched the intro because I honestly had no idea what you were talking about, and... it wouldn't have looked like anything at all had I not known what I was supposed to be seeing. And even then, it's a stretch. I'd say it's just a stock fire/explosion effect, and pareidolia working its magic.
Although, mind you... it really does look quite startlingly like what you described in that particular screenshot. So, you know what? I'd hate to rain on anyone's parade - hardly up to me what people should or shouldn't believe. I couldn't begin to guess as to whether or not it was an intentional resemblance, so making such a definitive statement was rather pointless on my part. Maybe it really was slipped in as some sort of reference, even if I'm hesitant to believe it myself.
anyways, i'm posting too much. sleep time. goodnight /who/
Can some artistic user draw me what Jenna's tits would look like from the front? I need it for reasons.
And yes, I censored her nipples even though they were allowed in the previous thread.
>It can't be...
>Unnatural History
Cheers, Jon Blum
Gatiss ripping off Classic Who? Ummmm, I don't see him ever doing that, user.
how are u guys feeling? i like the /who/ community for how close it can feel sometimes, and i wanna know how u guys r doing?
Good, just got home, it's a sunny day, no cold winds like yesterday. Will go feed my chickens in probably half an hour. Might crack open a cold one too, and maybe listen to an audio. Maybe pic related, haven't listened to it yet.
What about you user?
the captain jack set isnt in anway bad, but i wouldnt get hyped about it.
ive just moved into ontario from the uk, and ive gotten home from yet another drunken night out. making friends is stressful. i legit just wanna watch cify of death or something, but ive been making myself be as social as possible 2 give me a chance out here. well out of my comfort zone though
also its so cool that u have chickens btw. i love animals, but i wouldnt trust myself to look after any.
That's a shame, how would you compare it to the Torchwood audios? I rather like those.
Very nice job moving countries, is that your first time doing it? I'm trying it for the first time myself later this year.
That's fantastic you're pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you clearly understand why it's a good thing. I'm sure your efforts will pay off nicely.
idk, i think i just got over hyped about captain jack desu. for me torchwood audios are a bit hit/miss. of the ones ive listened to, "The Fall" is my favorite one. Don't know what that says about me.
but yeah, I've never left europe before, and now ive moved to a different continent. it's not that different desu, and ive lived alone before, so i can do it without much hassle. I've hung out with a bunch of other international students at my university, so I've got this weirdly diverse group of friends now, almost like a sitcom I'm the token white guy Where abouts you moving to? Excited? (obvs I dont expect too much of an answer, I know giving too much info away on Sup Forums is too much sometimes)
The fall one with Ianto and the plane? That was GOAT, def one of the best.
That's really awesome about getting that diverse group of friends, what's being the token white guy like? Any other DW fans? Probably a longshot.
I'm going to Korea and yeah, v excited, sick of here these days and looking for a change.
Being the white guy isnt that different tbqh. I love hearing the different perspectives though, like people from india talking about how different canada is or whatever. No other DW fans, but as much as I'm mega obsessed with DW, I'm also a mega fan of anything by Douglas Adams, and that new Netflix Dirk Gently series. I was reading the Dirk Gently novel on a bus, and literally made a bunch of other Douglas Adams fans, so that's always nice. No one at home likes the DG Netflix series, but I've already met like 3 people here as well :)
Enjoy Korea though!!! You're a lot more adventurous than me!
cute. do they have names?
The white one is either called "the white one" or "cranky", depending on her mood, the black one is usually "the black one". They had actual names long ago, when I started out with around seven chickens, but those were confusing times and it got simpler to refer to them like that. They're quite old indeed, they outlived many others. They don't lay much now but they're good birds all the same, especially the black one who is rather sweet.
Douglas Adams Who is top Who. That social part of reading actual books in public is one downside I think kindles and ereaders and things have, can't really strike up a conversation about them so easily.
Enjoy Ontario!!!
Thanks!!! its funny, for such an Adams mega-fan, I've never seen the pirate planet. I've even seen that thing were Shada is presented by the curator an older tom baker. It's on my laptop and everything. might watch that when im not busy
What if TUAT is medicore?
Also I got warned for censoring Jenna Coleman's nipples but some guy posted the full frontal pic in the previous thread and it wasn't removed. Hmm. ()
neoboo
I hope tuat isnt mediocre, but even if it is, i think the s10 finale was capaldi's real finale anyway desu. so I wouldnt be devastated. I still have dirk gently anyway
I loooooove the idea that the Shada narration version is the Curator too
I'm getting flashbacks to when FNA posted a nude Jenna and all the drama that ensued. Best be safe and not do it, and let go of caring it being unfair or whatever when others do.
If TUAT is mediocre, then that's that, but as it's a big loreheavy Moff episode I'm sure it will have its die-hard fans and its die-hard haters no matter what. I would be truly surprised if it was just a mediocre, meh episode, the premise alone is too wild for that.
You left your trip on m8
They're already bastardising the 1st Doctor by making him misogynistic for some reason, I hope that's the extent of it.
I just wanted an idea of what her saggy baps would look like from the front and it was taken from me. ;_;
? i wasn't doing THAT thing i was just commenting on you moving to korea
I wouldnt listen to that shit. we'll see what that actually is in context, and then ill get mad if its true lmao.
There's probably a Jenna thread running on the celebrity picture board, maybe try there
You weren't doing your "nitrate canister" thing?
Apparently the 1st Doctor goes into the 12th's TARDIS and asks "Why is it so dirty" and "Why don't you get Polly to clean it" and 12 has a little go at him.
I too used to raise have yard birds. I bred game cocks when I was I lived in WA state(Never fought them, never once been to a fight). Minor Blues and Hatch varietals and crosses mostly. Raised egg layers for a couple of years when I came back home. Barred Rock mostly and a couple of fancy bantams because they looked cool, but a neighbor's dog got a hold of them. Fun animals. Would have a blast hypnotizing them. Belle speaks a bit of Korean, her mother was stationed there during her pregnancy. I understand it's lovely and that PSY guy seems pretty damned cool desu senpaitachi.
I rather enjoy the new dirk gently. John Landis's helicopter parenting really paid off in Max.
>You weren't doing your "nitrate canister" thing?
not at all, nebron jamester
>TUAT
I'm not the only one who reads this as "twat," right?
YANA
fucking everyone reads it that way
>I understand it's lovely and that PSY guy seems pretty damned cool desu senpaitachi. oh cloi you old man. that's sooooooo 2013
Novely acts are timeless.
>John Landis's helicopter parenting
wewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
>Fun animals.
They really are! Many years back I had a chicken that adamantly believed it was a rooster, it would strut around like one, cock call in the morning like one, the whole works. Believe me, I checked many times, and it was indeed a regular female chicken. I remember her(him?) fondly.
I used to have a fair few bantams, they were pretty rowdy and liked to try and escape, nice looking birds though.
Great having homelaid eggs too.
Ooh that's neat about Belle. Hopefully I'll find some amusing Doctor Who stuff over there like pic related
I'd do it back to you but there's not much I can do with just "Cats".
Novelty*
poor psy. i don't think he ever wanted to be a novelty act
That picture always makes me smile. I want it on black velvet and hang it next to some dogs playing poker.
Better than being a one hit wonder. Bobby "boris" Picket got a fat paycheck once a year and quasi-immortality.
lowkey it always makes me smile when the cloisters have something in common, be it coke or chickens or anything else starting with c. obviously they arent actually the same time lord but it tickles me pink when they show some similarities anyway
i was about to call psy a one hit wonder too, but apparently he's still doing numbers in south korea.
i mean they might be the same timelord. as long as they dont blinovitch the other incarnations to pieces
I think the other cloister likes cookies. I like cookies too.
Hangover was pretty big over here I think. LEast I heard it a couple of times. Probably because snoop, but whatever. I liked it better than Gangnam Style.
>chickens
You think the Cloisters will ever meet up and show each other their cocks?
Can confirm, I like cookies
Oh you!
>tfw you accidentally expose yourself to another triplord.
I mean like they couldn't really claim to have seen your cock if they didn't see the head right? I mean like you couldn't say you saw a girl's tits unless there were nipple visible right?
Ashes to ashes, fun to funky
What are the best Doctor Who stories to watch inebriated?
What breed of chickens do you keep? I keep mostly cross breeds but I've started getting some Black Rocks and Blue Bells.
I've had the most success with ISA Browns for good low-effort layers. I have a relative with a tonne of them I normally just get some more off when I want more chickens. Most people with just a few chickens here go with them (most I've had at once is 7).
Had some leghorns, they're alright. Have had Australorps that lay pretty well and don't play up.
How are your Black Rocks and Blue Bells going?
Pretty cool :)
Mine are good at the moment. They're free range so at the moment they are laying outside. Gonna get a few more before the winter comes.
I don't drink alcohol. The Web Planet is pretty awesome stoned.
That's the way to go. Fun watching them poke around too.
I feel like I get more out of Station to Station (album, not just the title track) every time I listen to it, eternal props to the user who recommended it to me
Name me one that's watchable sober.
Dr. Who and the Daleks
no prob, happy to spread the word of the thin white duke
who wants to do a stream in 2 hours? what should we stream?
I never even got an answer. And now someone's gone and changed it to some awful Claudia nonsense instead of a comfy First Doctor scene. Damn.
(this would be in MY stream)
because there was half a thread about it like two or three threads ago
tldr: there was a poll on whether to keep it or not, No won
if you have an idea for a new looping vid, share it in thread, maybe we can do a new poll
maybe a 1/ben/polly scene would make sense? or just the TUAT trailer.
>I'm a survivor. We're a dying breed.
Whaddya wanna stream
im up for whenevs
some new who, we'll never get anyone in otherwise.
on second thoughts i might make it 5 hours from now, to catch some americans as they wake up. we'll see how active /who/ is, anyway
I'm an American and I don't want to wait 5 hours
based user
Where should I go to next if I'm already a big fan of Hunky Dory / Rise and Fall / Diamond Dogs / Station to Station / Let's Dance / Blackstar
im up for newwho, whatever anyone wants. maybe some matt.
3 hours sound fine?
matt sounds good. folks, reply with some suggestions while i have a shower.
You downing a bottle of bleach and cutting your wrists.
We just watched a lot of Matt lets watch something else
No I'd rather do it now
Matt has 3 series though, we only watched the specials. And s8 was on the stream yesterday. Just pls not tennant :( I can settle for Eccleston
fuck off mongo. wasnt it a razor last time? get fucked. your comment adds nothing. it has nothing to do with doctor who. and even cats is a human being behind the computer screen. fuck off.
>No I'd rather do it now
well that's not happening. hard to believe, but i actually clean myself. it's shower time, baby
I thought that cats self-groomed
>and even cats is a human being behind the computer screen.
yeah. totally human. meow
Well then I'm going to go read a nice book and play a video game while laying in bed. Dumb cat.
If you dig those records, i'd recommend you go for 'Aladdin Sane' and 'The Man Who Sold the World' (his first great album!), as those are his other iconic "rock" records. If you like everything around Ziggy, you can't go wrong with those.
Then try Young Americans, his 'soul' album, made just before Station to Station. Some people love this album (me!) some people just like it, but it's essential regardless.
Lastly, and perhaps most essentially, the 'Berlin' trilogy: Low, "Heroes, and Lodger. Frankly, talking about these albums won't do them justice, just dive in and experience them. Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) is the last album of his 'iconic' period and is on the same level as the prior Berlin Trilogy.
That pretty much constitutes all of his golden run of albums from the 70's. Outside of that, his work is very hit-and-miss, but there's some worthwhile stuff to be heard, namely 'Outside' a very experimental album from the 90's that's had a bit of a resurgence in popularity lately. 'The Next Day' from 2013 is pretty solid as well. But mostly the albums i listed in the first few paragraphs kick ass : - ) enjoy listening!
I already love the Man Who Sold the World title track very much (and the Midge Ure cover too) but haven't checked out the album.....will check out Aladdin Sane and that next :)
I've listened to and liked Ashes to Ashes and I'm Deranged independently of their albums, but I'll swing around to their albums eventually. I like really soaking in an album and listening to it heaps of times before moving on to a new one though so I can really drink it in.
Thanks for the excellent advice as always!
>insulting the person ur trying to convince to hang out in the stream with
something tells me you dont have many friends bucko. hint: try brushing up on ur social skills and not being an asshole to other people when you want to, you know, hang out with them. if you wanna go watch something alone go do that, if you wanna watch something with other people, try not being a cock to them
>bucko
Are you the dad from a 1980s US sitcom?
>try not being a cock
You should heed your own advice.
im not trying to hang out with other people in stream, just giving advice to someone who probably doesnt realise theyre unintentionally driving people off
@Neo
@Cats
would you want to stream with someone who was being pushy and calling you dumb?
I normally go in stream either to watch the specific thing or to hang out with multiple people, not just one, so it's not really a scenario I'd find myself in. But of course I wouldn't feel inclined to "hang out online" in your terms with someone being rude like that, why would I? It's so easy to be at least moderately nice and not be a dick, it's meant to be the default position of well-adjusted people.
I don't really know what you're talking about specifically though because I don't see any arguments here or anything. Is there some argument already going on in stream? I'm not on yet.
I think most people would read as being intended in good humour. That's certainly how I read it.
Yeah, and Cats is an Aussie too so I'm sure he took it as just bantz. If some user was constantly saying "stream with me you dumb cunt, you rancid swine" that other user might have a point, but this seems a non-issue to me. Maybe I'm just catsplaining tho
do aussies regularly insult each other? do you and your friends? do people actually call each other cunts?
>I'm Deranged
did you hear it on the Lost Highway soundtrack? perfect song placement desu
>do aussies regularly insult each other? do you and your friends?
Yes, it's just part of the culture, I have trouble comprehending relationships that wouldn't have any teasing or bantz in them. "Insult" is kind of a reductive way to put it because you're not actually trying to hurt your feelings or anything (although in a broader cultural sense I think there is some tall-poppy syndrome perhaps behind how prevalent it is), it's just ribbing, teasing, it's all good-hearted, everyone does it to each other. If a stranger randomly insulted you yeah that could be weird, but when it's a mate you've had for years, it's all just good fun. It's weird when someone takes it personally and actually gets offended, though some folks will stop if you have ask. I've hung out with folks from overseas before and most countries get it, but I've known some (not all) Americans and a Swedish chick that got all offended and uppity about it. Most euros totally get it though, and I knew a guy from Singapore that bantzed with the best of them.
>do people actually call each other cunts?
It's not as common as some online would have you believe, but it's not uncommon at all in certain areas/subcultures/social groups. You can't just fucking say "cunt" anywhere though.
Yup! Fucking brilliant where it was, worked so well. I'm a huge Lynch fan.
