DoA Group Therapy Session: Turkey Day Edition

In tonight's (early!) strip, we see an alternate universe man was not meant to know- an alternate universe where Coke Freestyle machines are not just ruined for us, but also for Joyce forever.

Also, I'm (and by "I," I mean "patreonanon") not going to be around when the strip posts tonight. Do not lament my death, but someone else is gonna have to get it, is what I'm saying.

We are gathered here today in memory of the nameless user whose title was Patreanon.

... there's nobody here.

I'm here.
working on recording the porn edits comic.

I'm here. Maybe we should fill the void with lewd pictures and stories?

do it

Weeeeeeeell I do still have this Mary.

Silly user, that's not accurate at all.

Her pubic hair is supposed to look like a miniature version of her head hair.

That strip is from weeks ago.

Christ, that "Becky pervs on Dina's scalp" plotline has been endless and pointless.

It sure has motherfucker.

Here's the latest patreon strip.

WOW IT'S FUCKING NOTHING

...

>endless and pointless.
It's a perfect introduction to the comic

holy shit, somebody with foot long hair, has hair under their hat

also why does BECKY have regular-ish eyes for once in the second panel

CENSOR THIS.

Goddamn, those eyes in panel four. Panel 2's normal eyes only serve to highlight how creepy the solid black ones look. Also her right eye doesn't clip through her hair in panel 2.

I expected him to stretch the plot to next week.

Hmm. Well first off, I'll say the coke freestyle line works better in the strip it was used in on the site. The line is really dumb either way, but saying "I will be doing y so hard my x will be like z" feels way better with such a stretch of a comparison than just going "my z will be doing y so hard". At least Joyce comments on it, but she goes back to standard Joyce behaviour too fast afterwards.

I feel like the strip that got posted to the site is better, just by virtue of not using that terrible coke freestyle line. But they're both pretty boring.

Speaking of boring... Becky looks way better in panel 2, but only by going off-model.

>I expected him to stretch the plot to next week.
>implying he'll end it this easily

We will probably still get at least 2 or 3 comics out of this conversation.

vocaroo.com/i/s0U0ApuC3SKr

that last panel is so unnaturally worded.

That's just hilarious autistic robot speech

it's especially unnatural compared to most of her dialogue.

>also why does BECKY have regular-ish eyes for once in the second panel
She actually looks significantly better that way.

Okay

Now

SLIPSHINE

2lewd4me

It's a callback. It's very unnatural and is made more so by making it a question by intonation.

Something like "Sorry, did I not select the appropriate lie?" Would've still accomplished the callback while being a bit more natural.

God bless you, VAnon, and your re-imagining of Dina as an effeminate upper class schoolboy and Becky as cowboy Harvey Fierstein.

It's a massive improvement to Becky's design. I think the only characters that the eye dots really work for is Walky and maybe Joe.

Bizarre right?
And it's not like it's fan art that would take too long to reproduce consistently, its an incredibly minor change that makes the character look more like a person

Adding the white pupil area helps to anchor Becky's eyes to her face instead of just creepily floating around.

and being overtop of her hair

vocaroo.com/i/s1Vk6CnXbG6O
one good thing about this comic is that it lets me practice my voice work, which is cool.

If he gave Becky sclera all the time he'd have to do a transparency with her hair otherwise having her eye show through her hair appear very obviously as a layer.

Did I not call it when I said Dina was going to be like "All you had to do was ask" and that her head would be unremarkable?

Is it even a strong character point for Dina that she always wore the hat? Is this supposed to be her version of QC's Claire taking off her pants? Is Becky going to break Dina's heart later, and one of the statements out of her mouth will be something along the lines of "I took my hat off for you"?

It's like Willis was trying to find a way to make a cartoony subplot in his grounded and semi-realistic comic. It never worked in Degrassi; why would it work here?

So it is a calculated artistic decision motivated by laziness?

New strip!

BG, why did you ask me to do a parody comic with like...every character? Many of whom are women?

Fuck the chunky chick. Pity sex is still sex.
Pitiful sex but still counts.

Technically, I wasn't the one to ask for the VA. But I'll take the blame anyways, since it's Christmas and all.

To be completely honest with you, I forgot how wordy and overcomplicated "Tales of Sinterest" was. If I had remembered that, I'd have suggested something like "Walky Performs A Sex". I suppose the first thing that went through my mind was thinking of which story had the most coherent narrative, and wasn't just something that ends up in a series of grunts and moans of pain.

But mostly I wanted to avoid "To The End of the Line" being in your radar, seeing how it's the most recent. I'm not too proud of that censorship, primarily because my experiment with the dialogue there is, in my opinion, a failure. But I guess I shouldn't have expected much from the DoA comments section.

So you're free to drop "Tales of Sinterest" if you would like. Again, I'm not even the guy who made the initial request, so it's not too much of a bother for me. I'm almost starting to regret trying to avoid "To The End of the Line" given how I've just now gotten a mental image of Snake voicing Cerberus' comments.

I've already got everyone except ruth and billie recorded, but this would be a bitch to edit together, so I might drop it. if you notice the solid black lines, those are all clips of audio that need to be shifted around and lined up to match with the other characters, who also have multiple clips of audio. The more people, the more clips. The more clips, the longer and more tedious it becomes.

I was thinking of Walky Performs a Sex, or maybe head of the class.

This is really adorable. I like that you gave her the wrist bands, I really like that part of her design.

Yeah. Again, I'm sorry for all of that. By all means, feel free to do anything else.

I do dabble in audio/video editing, though, so if you dumped the audio clips in here when you're done, I may be able to make something out of it.

if you're up for it, I'll export each character as an audio file, then work on 'head of the class' on my own I just did a practice read and burst out laughing halfway through. kudos.

This would have been better if she'd said "making sex", instead.

A good callback refers to a line that was either recent (i.e. not a fucking year ago) or calls back to a line that the story put some major focus on so it sticks in your mind. Or you repeat it so much that it becomes a running gag that you can refer to as you wish.

Willis likes to spread his callbacks way far out so his fans can mock you for not recognizing it immediately.

>lady syrup
>LADY
>SYRUP
Anons, raise your hands if you have ever heard/read that phrase, or anything vaguely like it, outside of a fanfic by a middle schooler, and then follow it up by stating what YOU think made Willis think that phrase would work

DID YOU GUYS KNOW THAT BECKY IS A LESBIAN?!

JUST YANK

THE GODDAMN

HAT OFF

this is so fucking inane

I fully expected Willis to do some bullshit where something is blocking the actual reveal

No one wants your unfunny comic leeching from other unfunny comic that is more popular than yours will ever be.

It does work on some level when you remember that Becky was a homeschooled fundie until six weeks prior. It fails because Becky should be similar to Joyce in worldview, but Willis writes her far less sheltered and more secular than he should.

Subtle callbacks work as long as they can stand on their own.

At least that would have been a fucking joke.

Reminder that Joyce was actually judged by her community to be the most suited to go to a secular university, and Becky started off barely knowing what Seinfeld is

Not really. Hell, she shouldn't even be aware of what happens if/when females orgasm.

To be fair, given the sliding timescale, at the start of the strip Seinfeld would have gone off the air when Becky was six, currently it would have gone off the air the year she was born. But yes, Willis wanted her to be a comparison to Joyce and made her secular and worldly rather than a more adventurous version of Joyce.

That's a completely different level of sheltering than this comic works on. Plus she has a vagina herself, so I'm sure she understands that when Satan puts lust in her heart, or God puts love in her heart, it makes her no-no place all drippy.

Now I'm just recalling the strip where Joyce is swinging Sarah's vibrator like a lightsaber and talking about her 'vee-vee'. In the Willis writing handbook, there's not much separating "Acts innocent and naive" and "Acts like she's five"

I knew a hardcore Christian girl in college that didn't stop using euphemisms for body parts until her sophomore year.

Same here. She also thinks she can sustain a completely chaste relationship with a pagan boy for years until they're hypothetically married.

I'm skeptical, and also sorta sad about it. Willy is right on one account, IMO: Fundie Christianity and parents who enforce it strictly tend to cheat their kids out of things unnecessarily.

The same girl I mentioned maintained a chaste relationship with a guy for a few years until they got married. Granted, it was "mutual masturbation doesn't count" chaste, but I really think that's close enough.

And I think your second point is true for all forms of strict beliefs, not just religious.

from what I've seen it's usually one of those "x doesn't count" types of relationships

Mormons do it all the time, usually it's intercural, "just the tip", not moving when it's in, fellatio, or straight up anal.

>straight up anal

Mary seems like that kind of girl.

One major problem with the girl I mentioned is that she very obviously wants to be physical with the guy, but she beats herself up over it because she thinks it makes her a slut.

Doesn't help that she thinks her best friend (my gf) has maintained a sexless relationship for 3 years now, when it took us about a month to realize "anything but" wasn't going to cut it.

You really need to get her some book on sex-positive Christianity or something. Maybe get your gf to talk to her about how having sexual desires doesn't make you a slut, they're perfectly natural, and you're not supposed to beat yourself up for having them but rise above them.

Anyone got the first three Fuck Zones?

The "don't fuck someone if he/she isn't your spouse" rule was way less complicated back when 90+% of your peer group was someone else's spouse.

She left the door unlocked, and someone walked in on her and her roomie getting freaky. I get the sense that Becky is very aware of her bodily fluids.

Or when you were wed off to somebody right after you got to the age that you start looking sideways at the opposite gender.

The response I've gotten is "God's laws don't change even if society does", which always rang a little hollow to me.

I just realized something

If Willy ever did do a Slipshine involving Becky

Her carpet would look even more fantastically retarded than the rest

Spooky!

I know Dina is way into fossils, but she's skipping some intermediate steps there...

>vulva is visible through the pubic side cut

Wait, is that what happened to Becky?
Why the heck would anybody just walk into somebody's room unannounced? The only people who don't knock before entering a dorm room are the people who actually live in the room.

Y'know, it would be funny to see if Becky's old roommate comes to campus one day and runs into Becky.

Here's where it happens:

dumbingofage.com/2014/comic/book-5/01-when-somebody-loved-me/definitely/

I see. Out of curiosity's sake, I looked at the next day's strip.

Judging from the flashbacks and Becky's attitude towards the situation, as well as her attitude ever since then, Becky's really not being all too sympathetic. The flashbacks seem to imply that Becky forced herself upon her roommate, whose cries of resistance would probably be the only way I could see somebody choosing to walk in on the two. Becky brushing aside her roommates' parents' complaints that Becky was "a bad influence or something" also leads me to believe that she doesn't see her actions as having consequences for anybody else.

That's just my thoughts on it, though.

I think that's reaching a bit, m8. It seems a given that the roommate claimed "bad influence" to save her ass (evil Christian, of course) when it was by all indication consensual.

Doesn't mean she isn't annoying, though.

>whose cries of resistance
She took her glasses off and is clearly on top of Becky in the first strip.

Like said, she was covering her butt at a conservative school. She seems a bit unsure about her decision in panel two of the second strip.

I'm just looking for sense where there is none. A story where there is only a blank slate.

Becky being a lesbian semi-rapist in denial is a far more interesting story to take than Becky being oppressed Because Lesbian. She wouldn't even have needed to semi-rape Dina because Dina forced herself upon Becky.

The glasses are off, but look at the leg freckles. That's Becky on top.
I was confused too until I saw the leg freckles.

And I do acknowledge that I'm probably stretching it out. But again, it would be a lot better from my perspective were it the case. Sort of like if Sarah had caused brain damage in Ryan after whacking him twice in the head with a baseball bat.

I wish I could believe that Becky would do that. But she is perfect and therefore can do nothing wrong.

Ain't that just the way.

Man, I feel like there isn't a single storyline in DoA that couldn't be improved by removing the characters' plot armor and give them actual flaws or create consequences for their actions.

Eugh

How vulgar

Another life Becky wrecked because of her vagitarianism

Fifteen minutes until go-time.

I predict this next strip will be Willis' attempt to convey the apprehension and anticipation of Becky as she slowly lowers her head into Dina's hair, taking in one big whiff with a flustered look upon her face as Dina comments upon the sudden smell of tuna.

And then they break up?

What if he switches perspective again because he no sense of tone and pacing?

>they break up
>Becky

As long as Willis is the universe's God, Becky is getting everything she wants.
She could wish for the death of any person, and it would be granted.

I could see that, but this preview panel is dated for 28 November; the strip we'll be getting tonight will be for the 27th.

So given that we've seen Sydney just a few days ago in the same setting, I doubt we're switching locales just yet.

Did this nigger really just draw 3 strips for this?

That's decompression for you.
You should see it in actual comic books.

friendly reminder Willis actively prunes passable storytelling in favor of pointless pandering

No offense, but that's Cerberus-tier headcanon.

Cerberus tends to go more for determining character motivations and fills in backstories based on their own experiences. What I did here was create an idea based on evidence presented.

Also, I'm open to having my ideas being decried as shit by others; I don't believe Cerberus offers the same on the DoA comments section.

Guess what, gang? In tonight's strip, more of the same!

It's actually kinda cute, I think. I'm a sucker for hugs.

Why is everybody in this comic gay though?

Becky's interacted with her roommate post getting kicked out.

And saying Becky is a rapist because of how she's positioned in a flashback and basing it on the assumption that no one would walk in to her room unannounced unless it's because her roommate is crying for help is determining character motivations. Based on evidence presented Becky's roommate being a sadist who entraps unsuspecting closeted lesbians in compromising situations with an accomplice then puts the blame on them to get off scot free is equally valid.

And would make for a pretty damn good villain.

>i am insecure and anxious without something around my head

And no one, parents, friends, doctors, anyone, has ever mentioned that this is something she should y'know, work on? So that she can feel better and improve her mental health so that she doesn't need to have a hat on at all times like a goddamn security blanket? Seriously?

Brownie points
