I don't get quite as sad for Angel in that episode as I do for Buffy. He gets to make the choice to go back, I know you could say he was forced to make the choice but at least he knows that he couldn't live with himself in his new life as a human so he can never fully regret the decision to go back and change the future. Buffy on the other hand, sure she forgets but her character is going through so much coming to see Angel in LA. She's pissed Angel went all voyeur on her in Sunnydale, she's still sad he left, I'm pretty sure there's more going on too but I can't remember right now and then Angel leaves her again!
Plus Sarah Michelle Gellar really gives a great performance here, maybe her best in the entire show. I know she's not considered a great actress but she has at least two or three really great performances over the course of the series. I remember thinking what a bitch she was being but then getting completely overwhelmed by her teary eyed pleas at the end of the episode. David Boreanaz just isn't as good an actor when he's trying to project sadness. He is pretty cute eating ice cream though.
