Germany was under terms which required it to be disarmed, it was not self-sufficient for the necessary supplies (including food) which could be denied it by embargo if it didn't comply, and the brutally expansionist USSR was marching across Europe toward it, and would have invaded Poland around the same time regardless of Germany's actions, which would have put it on the border of a defenseless Germany.
The German people united under Hitler for good reason. The alternative was to accept conquest by the USSR, a power which had already done worse things than the most fantastically murderous claims about the Holocaust to the people it had previously achieved power over.
