Are they an adequate way to measure intelligence or are they pseudo science?
I'm inclined to believe that the reasoning and problem solvingetting aspects of these IQ test are an accurate way to test intelligence.

No I'm actually good socially, as well as good at detecting patterns and solving problems. I tend to be skew more creative than analytical however, so I never quite excelled at any sort of STEM classes but am great with english and the humanities. I'm an artist. The way I look at these test is to compare IQ to the GHz of a cpu, AMD has 'higher speed' chips than intel, but lack some of the more sophisticated instruction sets and so dont always perform as well. The software you run would be your education. IQ can help you understand your potential, but it wont help you achieve it.

Right exactly. There was a lot of to-do concerning IQ when I was that age, and lots of comparing notes and stacking ourselves against one another. What I eventually learned was that the best course of action is to forget about it and apply yourself as diligently and passionately as possible to the things you excel at. That way one can potentially live a productive and successful life with absolutely no knowledge of their own IQ. Right? Someone who has a score they consider to be low might falsely limit themselves to things far below their true potential

Breezed through college physics Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Thermal, and Quantum. (4 course sequence), and did not bad in my Mathematics classes in which many failed.
Went on to work in insurance though and that helped with the whole human interaction thing.

IQ only shows raw intelligence. There are other important factors, like physical strength, strong instincts, the ability to win a fight, sexual attractiveness, common sense, etc.
Most millennials think that those factors don't matter, common sense is just homeopathy and isn't real, and your instinct is just some stupid thing for cavemen that needs to be eradicated. They value knowing trivial details, like they know the year some bill passed, or they know whether or not George Washington had wooden teeth, or they know if Abraham Lincoln really did chop down the cherry tree, but fuck being able to survive if someone attacks you, that's not valuable.

IQ tests are very useful in diagnosing mental illness, determining job fitness, and in perticular determining academic performance.
There are two general types of IQ tests. Simplified ones that give you a single IQ score at the end. These are honestly not very useful but given by a few orgs like police department, military, etc. Lower IQ people will have trouble keeping up in certain jobs though, and higher IQ people will get bored in certain jobs and have high turnover. These tests may only test a few spectrum of intellegience, but can be given quickly without training.
Proper IQ tests, used by psychologists and schools, are much more useful. These are typically given by an examiner in the form of physical puzzles, vocal questions, and written questions. Many differant types of questions will be given, on arthimetic, memory, pattern recognition, and a wide variety of intellectual skills. The results you get list your strength in each intellectual skill relative to the rest of the population, I got my results in the form of percentiles, although you can certainly convert this data to a single IQ scores. These tests can not only show that you're smart, but show HOW you're smart, and can be used to show somebody will say excel in math and struggle in english. The more granular investigation of intelligence is also more useful to people looking to diagnose mental illnesses and generate evidence of them - autismos for example tend to do exceptionally well during the pattern recognition portion of IQ tests.
They're smart so long as you understand their limits. Somebody can have off the charts smartest in the world ability in one field of IQ, but below average performance in others, and be regarded as low-IQ, Rain Man/Kim Peek was infamously about 80 IQ and had a photographic memory. Somebody can have high IQ, and have a disability that impairs their ability to function day to day. IQ tells you some things about a person, but just some things.

Realize that somebody over 120IQ is probably a notably smart kid in a given high school class.
Somebody over 130IQ might be the smartest kid in the class.
Somebody 140IQ might be the smartest kid in the grade.
Somebody 150IQ, smartest in a town.
170IQ and you're about the smartest person in a US political district.
Of course some schools will be concentrated with high IQ geniuses and some will be concentrated with remedial kids, but nonetheless, anybody claiming an IQ of 145+ is claiming to roughly be the smartest kid at an average high school. We have several of them every thread, I'm sure one or two of those kids really does browse Sup Forums, but still. I actually think Sup Forums trends high IQ, but it's always funny to read these threads when you know how rare IQs are.

Likely yes as pattern recognition & processing speed are both tested by IQ tests and both used in tetris. Likely if you took an IQ test, played tetris a ton for a year straight, and took another IQ test you would score higher as your brain would be wired more efficiently to do some things tested in IQ tests.
It's somewhat of a misconception that IQ scores are static as well, if you train to do the things tested on IQ tests you will score higher on an IQ test, although it will somewhat undermine the point of the test. It's not as if the things tested are super secret.

100 is the average, the test is adjusted so that 100 is the average. If people overall got smarter or dumber somehow the test would be readjusted so that 100 remains the average.
