You couldn't even vote in this country when it was founded unless you owned land. It was an aristocracy in everything but name (George Washington was the richest man in America at the time of his presidency, due to his land inheritance and further acquisition). Things got a lot better after the civil war in terms of reining in the frankly abusive oligarchy which has dominated America since its inception, turning everybody of a lower caste into literal slaves.
Wages actually started going up in the late 19th century (contrary to the predictions of Marx), unions were successfully challenging corporations for a five day work week and a limit to child labor.
But then WWI and WWII happened and everybody went insane. Working class newspapers went out of business as advertiser's subsidized the cost of more oligarch oriented and friendly media (whereas working class newspapers could not draw advertisers and could not compete with the price), unions were destroyed during the 50s, 60s and 70s, (and wages have remained stagnant ever since), the corporate state completely took over the US and are about to fully privatize the army and social security (already the the Afghan war effort is extremely privatized, with cooks being replaced by private contractors from Kellogg's, soldiers being replaced with mercenaries from BlackWater, etc.).
And the media itself, dependent on advertisers has swallowed itself in such a black hole of self-deception and lies that they still cannot bring themselves to admit that the people voting for Trump display at least some intelligence when they vote for somebody who is not owned.
My point is, things are a lot better now than they were at our founding for a lot more people, in terms of rights. But some things are getting worse in terms of wealth and ownership, especially since the golden age after WWII, where unions were strong, wages were high, employment was low and the government did long-term infrastructure projects.
