Overflow happens when a number's binary data is larger than the memory that holds it.
Let's say you were storing a number in a 4 bit large block of memory.
It could hold the numbers 0000 through 1111.
1111 is equivalent to 15, but 16 is 10000. So if you tried to store the number 16 in this memory block, you'd only store the 4 0s and the 1 would overflow out of the memory block.
Normally the only effect this has is that the number wraps around to 0 and the 1 won't actually occupy a place in memory. But a buffer overflow means that the 1 will occupy the next bit in memory.
So let's say you have two 4 bit memory blocks next to each other.
0000 0000
They both hold a number between 0 and 15. If you put the number 16 into the first block, this will happen.
0001 0000
The first block(reading right to left because endians) overflows to 0 and the second block buffer overflows to 1.
