Hillary Clinton has accused “half” of Donald Trump’s supporters of being in a “basket of deplorables” which she went on to describe as containing racists, sexists, homophobes, and bigots. The remark has received signifiant attention, even as Trump tries to push back by falsely claiming that she was referring to all of his supporters. But a look at national polling data suggests that not only is Hillary right about Trump’s supporters, she’s actually being generous in her numerical estimation.
Hillary was looking to send a wake-up call to the moderate and casual supporters of Donald Trump by pointing out to them that they’ve lumped themselves in with the nation’s most egregious bigots and lowlifes, thus forcing them to ask if that’s the side they truly want to be associated with. Sure enough, this poll from a year ago revealed that 66% of Trump supporters believed President Barack Obama was born in another country and isn’t an American, while this more recent poll pegs that number at 52%.
The rationale for believing that President Obama was born in another country is well worn by now: because he’s a black guy with a Muslim sounding name, they don’t want to accept him as a “real” American, therefore they’ve decided (without a shred of evidence) that he must have been secretly born in Africa, therefore he’s not a natural born United States citizen and shouldn’t be President. In their minds they’ve literally disqualified the first black President simply for being black. It is the single most blatant and abhorrent form of racist rhetoric in the United States in the 21st Century, and anyone who chooses to believe that lie Obama can be safely assumed to not only be a racist, but to be very proudly a racist. In other words, 52% of Donald Trump supporters are indeed bona fide racists.
There's being born in America and there's being an American. Obama isn't American. He hates America. That's why he vowed to fundamentally change America.
