You have to understand that this modern form of populism (and thus the alt-right) isn't a regular movement. This is why it is such a success. Trump and the movement is winning by not playing by the rules and not following understood political behaviors.
Basically him being rich or poor doesn't matter, the focal point being his personality. Him being a multibillionaire businessman isn't an issue either since his ambition is mainly driven by a genuine will to save his country. He is just like other billionaire politicians who, having already everything, and full with egotistical ambition, see themselves as the only solution to their countrie's problem. These man could be seen as fools but most of them actually bring something new to the table. See Berlusconi for instance (who was part of the establishment so a bad exemple). The main difference is that Trump is also against the establishment.
