SOME

BODY

They sold to Universal and not Warner Bros.

ONCE

>make a couple of genuinely good movies
>they do shit
>make a movie shitting on Disney filled with pop culture references

DreamWorks chose the pop culture reference path while sometimes making a good movie

eventually Disney noticed the mad shrek money DW was making and started to try and copy them like what with they did when UPA became successful. They failed however

TOLD ME

>implying the original Shrek wasn't good
>implying it wasn't better than more Poor Man's Disney stuff

oh, it was good. Not denying that.

Just saying, once the shrek money came in, Dreamworks started pumping out more pop culture movies. Same with Disney, since they wanted that money too
That's Shrek 5 is a thing

They spend too much money to be as hit and miss as they are.
Never mind that sometimes even ostensible hits don't make any money either.

NBCUniversal wants to get back into the Shrek business because they bought DWA for the IP and that's their biggest one

Not that that matters anymore, since they now have a corporate parent to offset those losses

Katzenberg micromanaged every early movie, and only relied on his own judgement for the quality of the production. This meant, for the successes, that if he was proud of how the movie was being made, it would keep that same vision by the time it hit theatres; but it also meant if he was convinced a bunch of shitty ideas were the way to run things, nobody could convince him otherwise and the movie would suck.

Read the book "The Men Who Would Be King" for a fascinating look at how DW first came into business and operated (The book has a negative, cynical slant you don't see in most entertainment studio reports. It comes across as a very revealing expose.)

Around Kung Fu Panda, he finally started letting off on productions, and allowed directors' visions to come through (ala HTTYD). Because of DW financial problems that have lasted since the company was first founded way back in the 90s, once a slew of movies started underperforming one after the other, the company was put into panic mode, closing down studios and laying off hundreds of employees. As such, the production calendar was changed. This is why we only got Home as the sole DW movie of 2015, and why an increasing number of movies revolve around braindead entities like troll dolls and kids books about talking babies, because even if they're not high brow they may be a lower risk of making back a profit. Since Home miraculously defied studio expectations and overperformed, both KFP3 and Trolls have been successes. This is where we are now.

Look it up

>formed by ex-disney staff members who went on strike and made due with a cheap yet sufficient way of animating that helped them become highly successful and even Disney and more copied it at one point

i dunno if Trolls was such a bad idea.

i mean the story was meh, but everything else was porn for eyes and ears.

^This.

While at Disney, Katzenberg somehow convinced himself that he was a creative, and was solely responsible for the success of movies like the Lion King. He also had a weird obsession with movies being "urban" and "hip". Projects succeeded in spite of him, not because of him.

That said, Dreamworks Animation was also saddled with a huge amount of debt when Dreamworks SKG broke up. Yet it kept spending because it was too optimistic. They worked on the assumption that every movie was going to do Shrek 2 numbers.

Dunno why, but, talking about Katzenberg...
He always looked like a her to me.
Maybe it's because I'm a Pixar fanboy and I hate what he did to Lasseter, that pure cupcake boy.
Is he really a Jeri?

I meant jerk

I want to give Lasseter a friendly hug to cheer him up after Katzenberg steals his movie idea.

Is there anything rong?

Katzenberg is a spiteful jerk indeed. He holds a grudge against Disney ever since he left it. He's also a massive panderer - keep in mind the reason why Kung Fu Panda 3 was inferior to the first two was because he really, REALLY wanted to pander to the Chinese masses this time. Thus, less witty humor and more lolpandas jokes.

The

Nothing went 'wrong' they just made a couple of movies well above their average ability and everybody assumed it was the new normal, instead of accepting Shrek was about regular their baseline of quality

Are they more hit or miss?
Also, Shadows still on?

What did he do to Lasseter?

Got that book for Christmas from a cousin who works there. Have yet to open it. Is it good?

I can't believe Prince of Egypt is among all those meme movies.
IMO, Megamind is one of the best animated movies of all time though.

>Megamind is one of the best animated movies of all time
This, its highly underrated
