I think the lads point is more that our social organisation is dependent on circumstances and needs and that our current society no longer gives people the incentive to adopt more traditional family structures on a large scale. For the family to be the basic unit of society, the family /needs/ to be the basic unit if society. If that need is not there, there is no way you can artificially bring about large scale change just out of preference.
An analogy to this is that people weren't fat in the past because they needed to move their bodies in their daily lives. They simply weren't allowed to get fat by circumstances. These days people can exercise, but exercise is not necessary for their basic functioning and survival in the world, so a lot of people don't exercise and get fat. All the telling them in the world to exercise is nothing compared to actually needing to walk 10km a day or not being able to get to your job. People need real, practical incentives to do a thing on a societal scale, not just some relatively arbitrary preferred ideology.
Perhaps I am a joke. However, I am the first member of my family to NOT have been raised in a nuclear family in over 200 years, due to my parent's divorce. I'm 47, and my great-great-great grandparents had the same system going here in the US, and back in England before that. All it took was the 60s, a bad marital choice, and the no-fault divorce to fuck it up.

Of course the extended family all lived very close to together, usually in the same part of town (as is the case now, for many people) but the nuclear family itself still did exist.
My grandfather had to go to a nursing home, and because he was 6'5 and had Parkinsons and Alzheimers we were unable to care for him at home. My grandma visited him for hours daily until he died. Great grandma had the dining room made into a bedroom and lived here until she passed in her sleep. I took care of my granny so she never had to go to a nursing home. I expect I'll do the same for my mother.
We take care of our own. Even the best nursing home is a shithole. I, too, wish more people would open their homes to elderly relatives, they really do have a lot of wisdom and can contribute a lot!
