Of course not. It is sexist by definition.

That wasn't really the quote. It was a one-off from a comic she wrote. That said, it's pointless and silly and doesn't apply evenly to most art.

but how does that work? does she make someone else watch it first and let her know if she can watch it or does she watch until the end and then decide if she will watch it?

This. It's literally just a joke.

dumb marxist bullshit

If it's a joke how come a lot of bloggers and critics seem to take it seriously and complain about how a film "failed the Bechdel test"?

>tfw I had a lesbian professor in college who taught this as some kind of huge thing to look out for

Libtards were a mistake

What she actually means is if the entire movie matches the three criteria, not just one scene.

Bevause they're retarded like all critics

Because bloggers and critics are retards?

>anime meme

anyone can be a blogger.

One part of growing up is realizing that most people are genuine peasantry

Because they are very very stupid.

It’s flawed in many ways. There’s several movies that’s not “sexist” but still fails the test.
The test is sexist in and by itself by focusing on the actions of a single gender and not measuring equal representation of both genders and sexual orientations.

But that might be too much to ask and won’t deliver easy click bait headlines on popular “”””blogs””””.

If that young man so obsessed with here girls talk why doesnt he sign up for home ec next year?

More like bitchwhale test amirite?

They're braindead.
A piece of media passes the test if two women talk about how many shoes they bought while at the mall provided no men are mentioned.

Gosh I wish my school had offered home ec classes.

>Be a militant feminist
>Try as hard as you can to look like a man

Hmmmm

This. It’s so stupid.

I work with a bunch of women and their chatter consists almost entirely of
1. themselves
2. their relationships
Occasionally they will talk about something work related, but its uncanny how obsessed they are with relationships. Very few have interests outside of going to planned and paid for events with their friends. Getting to know them, I have only lost respect for them and realized just how interchangeable most of their personalities are.

Should only be applied to tv shows. Unless the protagonist is female, two female characters talking about their periods or some shit in a movie will feel like filler.

Good point. Films don't really have time for stuff like that but if you're making a Sup Forums show and women don't ever talk about anything besides men something is seriously wrong.

By that logic, Piranha 3D (literal 3DPD guro) is a more feminist friendly movie than Star Wars, which stars one of the most popular examples of "strong, independent women" in Leia. So no, it's stupid.

It's completely inapplicable to individual movies.
At "best" it can only be used to observe trends in the film industry as a whole that don't matter to anyone who isn't a well-to-do upper-middle class white feminist with too much free time on her hands.

What do they talk about in Piranha 3D?

Ok, it's been a while since I read the original comic but wasn't the joke that the only movie that had ever passed was Alien from 1979?

Like, instead of talking about a man both chicks were talking about the fucking alien instead...

Main girl tells a porn star to cross a rope over the river to safety. Keep in mind that the porn star gets eaten by piranhas a few minutes later because she forgot to tie her hair back before she crossed.

no kubrick for this lady, nor hitchcock nor kurosawa nor chaplin

ok cool

Wow. Women, am I right?

Most of my moeshit animu pass the Bechdel test, so they must be damn progressive

Are you seriously telling me there's not a single Kubrick movie where this happens in his massive filmography? You don't see anything weird about that?

damn imagine if women were represented accurately in media, that'd be fucked up

home ec would be nice if it still taught proper cooking, nowdays they teach kids how to microwave scrambled eggs because god forbid you use a pan on the stove

What a handsome ma-
>alison
Looks like we need fire up the oven again

...

The central concept of it has merit, but people who apply it in the most literal fashion are idiots who don't know shit about Alison or her material. Basically what said.

It's more complex than this, but it's hard to get into why without starting up a massive conversation that I literally don't have the time for because I'm clocking out and going home. I'll say this: it is incredibly common for the roles of women in film to centre around men; and that's if they're the leads or strong supporting characters at all. I don't think loose applications of the test are "sexist", even if the strict and literal interpretations are silly. I agree and disagree with you in fits and starts.

>microwave scrambled eggs
do americans actually do this?

>t. never met a woman

to be fair, they do pass the test if they spend at least some time talking about mindless consumerism, so i guess it is more valid, thanks allison

Its irrelevant
>just like women in film

Well yes, that's true.

>book that says Islam

pottery

>but people who apply it in the most literal fashion are idiots who don't know shit about Alison or her material.
So the same could be said of these people in this thread who say "WOW WHAT A STUPID PSYCHOTIC FEMINIST DYKE FOR COMING UP WITH THIS TEST, ALL WOMEN SHOULD DIE"?

it reveals a certain type of movie, yes

sometimes I'm in the mood to watch one that does and sometimes I want to watch 2 robots fight

a woman thought of it, of course it's wrong. women are the niggers of gender

Yes, because they are idiots who assume Alison was being supr srs when she was just kind of making a comical/metaphorical point about the underrepresentation of women in media and the frustration people in her group felt about that. It's like people on Sup Forums don't understand hyperbole.

Might have something to do with everybody here being autistic af

This is a flawed test. Most movies have male MCs, and every fucking character talks about the MC. Just by logic it's easy to see why women also talk about the males.
If they have a problem with that, they should make their movies with female leads.

you answered it in your own question

>talking about a system dominated by male executives and directors with vastly more power than women
>"make your own films"

well, I wouldn't expect a movie like Platoon, to give one example, to pass because women didn't fight in Vietnam (except in the VC lole), the test is unfair due to the lack of consideration of setting and context

>when even Satan btfo the bechdel test

Or maybe the people making films should consider WHY they're not making movies with female leads? You have people like Villenueve and Refn who aren't scared to do it, off the top of my head.

Americans microwave everything.

Showgirls is one of the rare films that passes the Bechdel Test with a perfect 3/3

bechdeltest.com/view/566/showgirls/

If someone uses it as a metric for anything then they are a worthless human

The Bechdel test isn't a test of a film's quality. It simply exists to prove a point. It's a low bar for a film to pass and yet many fail to do so. As you say good films fail it, but lots of bad films do too. Such a huge volume of modern cinema failing to pass this test implies that women are poorly represented in western cinema.

As a corollary try to find films where two men talk about something other than a woman. It's not nearly as common.

SJWs are retarded and even if it did pass the test they'd just say shit like "durr doesn't count!".

It's not a serious "test". Also it's not hard to pass.

Cause they're fucking idiots.
If you follow the test rules, Showgirls is more feminist than Silence of the Lambs.

This desu.

People feel comfortable repeating what everyone else is saying. If you can create a culture out of something as simple as a drawing, you'll soon have people teaching it as a doctrine.

The Bechdel test was a funny observation that got blown out of proportion.

Ton of games easily pass this test

>hates men
>desperately tries to look/succeeds in looking like one
What did she mean by this?

When you think about it, real life fails the test a lot.

Everytime I hear two women talking, it's somehow always related to gossip involving a man.

his "massive" filmography are 13 movies. And im almost sure it doesn't happen, particularly her 3rd point

Never happened to me. Workplace is usually gossip about other women or small talk.

It means nothing. Representation is a meme issue

Like those traps that hate women but like to wear skirts.

A lot of shitty porn passes, whatever that means for society. MomsTeachSex are the premier auteurs of our time?

Not anymore I don't. I don't trust microwaves, I'm worried about cancer. If I want to heat something up I use the stove.

Oh yeah? Name some examples.

it's pointless

It's just to make a general point about women in movies, the fact that so many movies don't pass it says the following things:

-male characters outnumber female ones despite being 50% of the population, this implies women's stories are less worthy of being told
-women are often shown only in the context of their interaction with males, and so only the male point of view of them is shown
-showing women who only talk about men omits anything that might suggest they have lives or interests of their own

It's all about showing the lack of the female perspective in media. Would it fix things to just deliberately meet these criteria? No, because it's just a symptom of the wider societal perspective on women, which in turn is a symptom of the real circumstances of women. So you see it's more social commentary than film theory.

So is it completely useless for analyzing particular films? Well it can a little. Not meeting the criteria can be considered to be a red flag, while meeting them is encouraging, but that's all. As many people in this thread have pointed out, it's very easy for it to not be indicative. Just off the top of my head a movie could have two female government agents on a manhunt for a male around whom the film's plot revolves. Technically they might not have one conversation not about him but it would hardly be two housewives gossiping over tea. On the other hand a literal porno with two secretaries talking about makeup for half a minute would pass.

This has been your Sup Forums femenist theory post of the day, please submit questions in the form of a (you)

life is strange

Holy shit it is a she
I thought it was just the typical numale american beta in the op
>tfw this shit will never end

I remember when the Bechdel test was a thing in video games and Bayonetta passed everything with flying colors yet it's still considered sexist trash

It's retarded

Why doesn't she follow this rule too?

>I'll only use a metal object if it meets the following criteria
>1) At least two of the miners who acquired the ore to make it must be women
>2) They must have chosen this profession because they enjoyed it

kys retard feminists

Hyperdimension Neptunia and spin-offs
Senran Kagura series
Bayonetta 1/2
Persona 3 Portable
Gravity Rush 1/2
Atelier series

This is actually really easy if you look at Japanese games

new Tomb Raider (maybe even the old ones idk it's been a while)
wolfenstein new order
deus ex hr, demd
telltale got, walking dead
cod infinite war.
skyrim
gta5
half life 2, e1, e2

FFXV which is a game about males bonding and brotherhood passed it. There's a scene where princess girl and a political leader woman talk about the serpent goddess Leviathan the princess girl is gonna wake up from slumber.

I dont care what a beta faggot has to say about movies.

Anyone who thinks Bayonetta is genuinely sexist is a brainlet or an insane militant SJW.

Everyone who replied to you had the joke go over their head.

The joke is that such a simplistic bar is not passed by 90% of films.

Do you have the one with the women's motocross?

entertainment and media are loaded to the gills now with women who can write and cast whoever they want so almost all of this means nothing now

hollywood's dyin either way

From a feminist perspective it's good that more women are in the drivers seat telling stories because it does make it more likely that the female perspective will be included. However it won't change anything if movies that include it are seen as less commercially viable, either because of audience prejudice or quality of storytelling. Luckily though audience opinion is increasingly tolerant and women participating in events that make good stories is increasingly common, so yes there is currently progress being made.

Who does Bayonetta talk to about something besides a man?

What do you mean "was a thing" in video games? There was a phase when everyone was trying to apply it to video games and you're saying that has passed and people have stopped doing it?

she talks to jeanne about a bunch of shit that ain't men

I dunno, I haven't been to Sup Forums in years

>BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW
keep crying libtard

What do you mean "right or wrong"? It's a taste for preference, not a taste of correctness.

The so called “Bechdel Test” is an awful test, made up by awful people, to support their awful agenda. It’s only use is to measure the narcissism of feminists. They actually expect the entire world to cater to them and their retarded feelings. Even comic book movies about a man that can fly in his underwear.

So you only saw it because people were doing it on Sup Forums?

I only saw it because much like Sup Forums, Sup Forums seems to care about what obviously retarded journalists say and even though I don't, it's pretty hard to avoid when there's 50 threads about it per day

The movies wold be boring, that's for sure.

Oh. Yes, both of these boards are pretty stupid in that respect.
