This is honestly the best bit of animated entertainment I've seen all year, and I literally caught this on the last day of 2016. Beautifully crafted, fun animation, building real drama without big set pieces, relying not on gimmicks or pop songs but telling the story respectfully, this puts multi-million dollar movies to shame.
Going to dump some screenshots. Nearly every scene in this thing is well composed.

the composition and color grading is nice, but the character designs and animation are ehhhhhhh
Brody Martinez
Really? I thought they lend to the whole "storybook charm" the movie had going and their movements were fairly fluid.
Mason Ward
The designs were a nod to plasticine models with a model touch. Note the hair in particular in I thought the designs were very charming, but more importantly the animation was superb. They did a fine job of communicating intent and acting.
Daniel Lee

Nathaniel James
One thing I noticed was that while the characters in the 'story' sections had sculpted hair, the characters in the 'real world' framing device had fully rendered hair (and fur).

I wanted to watch it, but there came stuff through. Is it on Youtube?

why does this look like moral orel?
Michael Thompson
It is. Also there was a mega, although I don't know if it's still up.
This looks wonderful! I didn't realise this had been made into an animated feature. Dahl's work deserves to be done right!
Tyler Barnes
The character designs appear to be strongly influenced by Quentin Blake's illustrations, particularly the Wicked Stepmother when seen in profile.
Of the pictures posted so far, I think you can see the influence most clearly in these: It's two half hour episodes. Paersonally, I preferred the first one to the second.
Angel Thompson
I skipped along the first one. Are they all about hating men?

Is this stop motion or CGI?
I seriously can't tell.

I'd rather have Wolf as flavor of the month, but she will do.
Camden Garcia
Is this based on Roald Dahl's book?
Henry Gutierrez
Yes.
Angel Allen
Very well-crafted CGI made to look like stop motion. (As opposed to Kubo, which was very well crafted stop motion made to look like CGI.)
Grayson Price
They do evoke his designs somewhat, but not the flourishes, which would have been difficult to translate to 3D anyway. I really do like what they've done here, though. Where others may see simplicity, I see elegance and directness, and they nailed the body language.
Looking through the credits, I was surprised by how small the team was. It's quite an achievement.
Ryder Lopez
Can someone post a screencap of Red's daughter's "We're screwed."eyes when she's sitting on the couch, staring into the distance.

The production company (Magic Light Pictures) were also behind the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom adaptations.

Look, just because they frolic through the fields, hold hands, gaze deeply into each others' eyes, and lavish each other with expensive gifts doesn't mean they're lesbians. Girls can do that.
But yeah they did.
Joshua Nguyen
Because this.

Was it a good choice to drop the Goldilocks segment from the book?
Michael Perez
Roald Dhal is about hating grown-ups, stop cherry picking to be an edgy teen.
I was very impressed with how the stories were weaved together, and the climax that was powerful, dramatic, and kept the spirit of the other 5 stories. I gladly take this over Goldilocks, which was just a straight up retelling.
On the other hand, if this had been a full length movie with 20 more minutes for them to play around with, I think they would have been able to write in Goldilocks.
Charles Sullivan
>Are they all about hating men? Where did you even get that from?
Jack Cox
Just scrolled the thread and goddamnit I'm psyched to watch this later. I was so fcking triggered by the end of Burton's James and The Giant Peach(I know he only produced but he chose the director and had enough say to tell him "NO! The aunts fucking STAY DEAD!")

As far as Roald Dahl adaptations are concerned, this is near or at the top alongside Fantastic Mr. Fox for me. It does something rare for adaptations. It added more without taking much away, and was respectful of the spirit of the original.
Zachary Harris
And then there is this asshole.
Grayson Wright
They lived separately, so it's likely that Red got married and had children until her husband ditched her for being a assassin and Red rediscovered her inner lesbian and started dating Snow again.
Christian Thomas
Roald Dahl teached us that adults are not only the bane of existence itself but also the the enemy we to defeat, he's like the British version of Yoshiyuki Tomino.
Leo Morris
Except for the one decent adult, like charlies Grandpa, BFG or the dad in that book about poaching. What was it called? I just realized I forgot the name and I actually liked that one a lot, which is strange seeing as I have always preferred the fantastic to the realistic.
You don't have to hide youtube links from the spam filter, bro. Thank's! Bookmarking this for later.

Honestly the morals of that book bugged me to death.
George's dad was poaching purely for the fun of it if I'm right in remembering, and was a negligent father. His heroism hinged solely on the fact that the guy he was stealing from was a prickly.
Sebastian Hughes
Never. Red and White are too pure.
Sebastian Murphy
Yes, and holy fuck. I knew how it was going to end seeing as it was about their whole lives told by their son. But fuck me. Cried like a bitch and I'm not ashamed, this guy had the best dad.
Cooper Bennett
Cinderella on the other hand is a ho. First goes for the Prince over dirtyhusbando next door, then settles for him when the Prince turns out to be insane and the husbando cleans himself up and get rich.
Leo Hughes
"Who was that old man?"
Jose Hall
Ahhh fuck. It hit far too close to home for me with my nan having Alzheimers, she never outright forgot us, but there were several times where she looked at me confused as if she didn't quite understand why I was there.
Noah Foster
posting the trailer frame by frame, eh?
Liam Lewis
That was my favorite book too.
I normally disliked most of Dahl's stories because they always presented the villa as being an ugly motherfucker, and I happen to be an ugly motherfucker, and reading these stories basicly told me I was the ugly villan with no happy ending.
Wyatt Clark
What did you guys think about the BFG movie? I never read the book, but I thought it was okay. My brother read the book when he was young, and it was one of his favorite books, and he seemed to enjoy it fine.
Just curious if it was a good adaption or not
Brandon Jackson
It really was amazing, please watch this if you care about animated films.
