They're still no joke. Computers get more powerful, but our desire for better lighting, shading, and realtime simulation grow just as quickly.
Despite computers being considerably more powerful than they used to be, render times are still tremendous for 3D scenes with good lighting and complex animation.

They probably didn't. This is almost certainly a case of one animator cheating and another unknowingly adjusting the camera angle so it wasn't off-screen anymore. It happens from time to time.

On the left is the illustration from the original books. On the right is it extended sideways by a different artist for a DVD bonus feature. It is meant to be set in an engine shed at night (pic related), however the artist has misinterpeted it as being outside the shed in broad daylight, and extended it as such.
