Petyr Baelish tells Lysa he loves her and wants to be with her, prompting Lysa to have Jon Arryn (her husband) murdered so that she can marry Petyr. Petyr gain power through Lysa by marrying, and also so that he can pit the Starks against the Lannisters (since they have good motivation to kill Jon Arryn, considering he discovered that Cersei had been unfaithful).

Petyr then played Ned Stark, pretending him to be on his side, helping him "learn the truth," and spurring him to go against Cersei and Joffrey. When Ned makes his move, Petyr betrays Ned, which allows him to increase his power through the Lannisters while ensuring further conflict that he can continue to use to his best interests.

After Ned Stark's death, Petyr continues to work with the Lannisters but also works with the Tyrells (the second wealthiest house in Westeros). He arranges the marriage of Margaery and Joffrey. This frees up Sansa (who is his key to the North) for him until she's wed off to Tyrion. With Tyrion wedded to Sansa, Petyr arranges Joffrey's assassination, which gets pinned on Tyrion and allows him to run off with Sansa.

Petyr and Sansa go to the Vale, where Petyr orchestrates the murder of his wife Lysa through Sansa. This gives him complete control of the Vale while also allowing him to marry another woman to gain more power.

At this point, you'd think he'd just marry Sansa and claim both the Vale and the North as his, but that wouldn't have worked when the Boltons control Winterfell and the North's armies. REMINDER: the Red Wedding wasn't a part of his plan, it was set up by the Boltons, the Freys, and the Lannisters. It really threw a wrench in his plan. So, he tried to curry favor with the Boltons by giving them Sansa while also working against them, essentially playing both sides. This winds up ruining him: he destroys his relationship with Sansa, yet his plan relied so heavily on her marrying him (or at least siding with him).

get rid of the midget hand and its an all right drawing

This is why the show is shit. In the books he is so much more Machiavellian. In the show you just know what he's up too.

The only thing that's really different between the book and the show is everything up to him marrying off Sansa to Bolton (he instead uses a fake Sansa) and everything after that.

it's a fake Arya

Whoops yeah that's true.

Plan #1
Bang both Mother and Daughter
Plan #2
Bang both Aunt and Niece
Plant #3
Bang both sisters

I don't think he was ever interested in the troll.

keikaku

Not him, but book Littlefinger goes to the Vale and basically isn't in the story again outside of a few of the Sansa chapters and a mention by Cersei, I think it was, who mentioned that she wished he was here to get King's Landing some gold.

it's clearly a set up so when he emerges with an army from there it doesn't seem contrived

The character never had an actual plan in the show. Since he was going to die, there was no end result that he was written to work with. Instead you get disjointed sneaky evil micro-plots that has nothing to do with anything in the long run for his goals.

I mean, who the fuck ruins their cushy brothel job, in the best city, to become a runaway with just about everyone after him and end up in a cold shithole with nearly no power at all? Some "plan."

all he wanted was harrenhal
