Blade Runner 2049 thread: no memes

No fucking memes, let's have a decent discussion about the film. All the BR2049 threads on Sup Forums right now are just memes, so I figured one could serve as a haven for those who would actually like to discuss what the film has to offer.

What did you think of the new Blade Runner film?

I think it's a solid 8/10 sci-fi material with a lot of substance and beautiful visuals, sound design & soundtrack. Overall it was a much greater experience compared to other modern sci-fi films, such as Interstellar, Avatar, The Martian, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, etc. It actually felt really refreshing seeing a film like that and I am quite disappointed that it is going to be a financial disaster.

The biggest flaw, for me, hides in the script. I didn't enjoy the scenes with Luv, I didn't enjoy the foreshadowing of the corny revolution led by a Messiah, and I didn't enjoy that Leto's character had close to zero depth whatsoever. Luv had so many scenes, kinda worthless at that, that could've been used to develop Wallace's character, and after 2nd viewing the "good boy, bad boy, i am the best" lines are bland as fuck.

Everything else? Pretty good.

Also, I think Villeneuve sacrificed too much of the film's story-telling integrity by making the film simpler than it is by all the flashbacks and lines, which was obviously meant for the wider audience (people between 18-30 years old who enjoy action sci-fi, capeshit kino and thought Interstellar was the most genious thing ever).

The exposition was pretty straight-forward as well, which is a big flaw as well. The bald white guy in the archives as there just for the exposition, and Joi was pretty obvious with her lines as well. Rest, I can't really remember.

Honestly, some lines and moments were very "in your face", and that was annoying. It made the film seem a tad bit fake and less subtle, taking away from the overall atmosphere and experience.

Well fuck you then, Sup Forums.

Its a solid 10/10

>no memes
Too late !

>didn't enjoy the scenes with Luv
Pleb. She's just like K but finds a reason to be in being the best angel.

It was really good; Only movie I've ever watched more than once in Cinemas. My only problem was they had to do the flashbacks more than once so Americans would have an easier time understanding whats going on.

she's nothing like K

>Guys let's have a thread to discuss the movie without memeing constantly.
And that's how you get an inactive thread. By trying to discuss a movie on a movie board without shitposting. As for the movie, I liked it and I can't wait to see it on blu-ray. Didn't think it was a masterpiece, but then again I wouldn't say that the original is a masterpiece either. I don't get it I guess.

this desu
angry reddit invadors are sure angry and spamming shit
the movie seems tailormade for Sup Forums

Did anyone notice how quirky and quickly Joi was when we see K first arrive home? To me this provides further evidence of how 'unreal' she is, because she is just extremely eager to please him, in a robotic fashion.

Do you think the emotional progress of this character backs up the idea that she became more 'human', or was she always just a program?

Moreover, did anyone notice that Luv says "We hope you enjoyed our product" to Joi and not K, could this be her saying that K has no identity himself? This could be backed up by Luv treating him like a pet and a drone, e.g. the boy comments.

K was also a robot at the beginning of the film. they evolved together

I didn't like this either but I didn't think it was a big deal. Flashbacks and voice-overs are a tired technique. I actually thought the director was taking a swipe at the original BR cinematic cut, which was heavily voice-overed, so I laughed in the cinema, startling the normies around me.

Overall? It was really good. Obviously the visuals/ sound were great. Gosling's performance was good, which surprised me. His relationship with his computer was pretty funny, well fleshed out. I enjoyed Robin Wright's death a lot.

This film satiates my need for good SLOW-paced sci-fi. Key word: slow. They don't get made like this any more and it's a shame. The most recent films I can think of that satisfy this are Moon and Under The Skin.

My only (small) criticism is the script relying on the original film for momentum. I would liked it to be a completely stand-alone.

>Do you think the emotional progress of this character backs up the idea that she became more 'human', or was she always just a program?
If this movie ever becomes a cult classic, it's a question that will be asked again and again. "Joi was special after all" "Nah, deadeyes Joi proves she wasn't". Could be either or.

>"We hope you enjoyed our product"
I'm still not sure. At sure it just felt like a punchline before the killing blow, but it could have more meaning than that.

>I didn't enjoy the foreshadowing of the corny revolution led by a Messiah
Even if this foreshadowing is just setup to lead us down a path the filmmakers intended? The film wisely swerves away from this obvious Hollywood resolution toward something much more personal and resonant. It subverts our expectations. Seems unfair to fault it for foreshadowing something that doesn't in fact happen.

Good point

But the direction in which she says it is directly at Joi. It could be a punchline though, but it certainly is not if Joi is not a product of the Wallace corporation.

>But the direction in which she says it is directly at Joi
Correct. K was lying on the ground half conscious. She could also be adressing both.

The only meme here is rating the movie of the decade 8/10
>literally too dumb for memes
back to r.ddit

Gits told the same story twice as well in half the time 20 years ago.
Luv was my favorite part because her emotes were funny/cute.
Didn't feel like it was trying to tell an engaging story so much as deliver ideas, none of which were new.
Wasn't weird enough.
Motives and stakes were unclear. Sentimental as he'll.
Can't fault them for trying.

>doesn't understand that movies are also subjective and a movie someone merely liked could be other persons best movie

How many times have you guys seen it? Wondering if I should go for a 4th viewing or just see IT.

Gee, it's like people perceive things differently. You're not inherently right or wrong by (dis)lking this movie.

Also the question "was Joi for real" was addressed with 10x more nuance in Saya no Uta and 2001.

I feel like the part with him exploring the orphanage could have been handled way better, that part just fucking dragged.

Also it was a mistake to feature Harrison so heavily in the ads because that killed the tension of him being in the casino.

IT wasn't that good imo, but it was fun in the theater because it was packed with little kids screaming. I don't know who let them watch it.
But then again many people like IT , so I don't know maybe I don't see eye to eye with everyone

I'm not in the habit of seeing a movie at the theather more than once, so I can't comment on that. As for IT, I would recommend the movie with the caveat that it's not a scary movie (for me), but rather a creepy one. Generally in an average horror movie you get a boring, loud screamer that may make you jump. In IT, you get long scenes with a creepy vision that you'd rather have fuck off screen.

Then there's the fact that there's actually two movies in one, so to speak, a coming of age movie and a horror movie. It's good in the sense that there's something else to the story than a spooky clown, but it's also bad because they are interwoven. Instead of going from calm movie to full on horror, it goes back and forth between the two, which left me wondering how the kids could still be calm enough to go about their daily lives. I would recommend it, but I really don't know by which metric you judge your horror movies.

i think it was a great, imperfect movie, just like the original. i think i'll look back in 30 years and appreciate it like I appreciate "aliens"; that is, as a flawed but massively aesthetic and enjoyable film.

my only real complaint was how replicants were handled. in the original, all the replicants had unnerving social quirks and ticks, and their eyes were very much a focal point for emphasizing their inhumanity. this one hardly had any of the eye-shimmer that was so distinct in the first one, and furthermore the actors who were replicants seemed to act in a very wooden fashion to convey their artificiality. Having seen the original recently, i really liked the consistent, programmed gate of the replicants, how they seemed to "scan" alleys and openings while they walked, and there slightly off-putting mannerisms and social behavior.

This are r.ddit opinions. Civil War was great, wasn't it?

Fucking LMAO, I made that.
Can't wait to make a HQ one when it comes to Blu-ray

...

The only problem I have with this movie was Luv. She felt like a bond villain's henchman, didn't fit the tone at all.

You're to late for the discussion, the memes have been crafted already.
I was there, it was good.

I was hoping she'd redeem herself at some point. I thought that was what her tears were leading up to.

Gonna see it for a fourth and final time but is it worth a 45 minute drive to see in in IMAX?

Just came out of the theater. I think the storyline with Joi was the most interesting. The love was fake with her being programmed and all, but it was done so eeringly well

People do that kind of drive to go to work several days a week. If you enjoy the movie to the point of watching it thrice, I think you'd find it worth it. That being said I've never seen a film in IMAX.

My first and only time around I didn't care for it much, because I already listed it off as a forced love story. I wonder if I'll like it better on a rewatch. Definitely one of those movies that benefits from several viewings.

The slow pacing ended up causing a sacrifice in time for character development for side characters.
Wallace is laughably one dimensional, and the whole replicant movement is just inconsequential and almost jarring in tone when they got introduced via a monologue of infodump.

There was exposition with the replicant "power level" (A-B-C, mental/body) and callbacks with repeated dialogue in the original.
Is a weird sci-fi setting you need a bit of that and it was a bare minimum.
8.5/10, not a masterpiece but a mong the best of the genre (BR original is better)

>I didn't enjoy the scenes with Luv
death to the waifufags, but Luv is for me the most fascinating of the characters.

Luv is fantastic. It shows internal conflict and even possible hints of rebellion.
It shows that K is not the only Nexus 9 with issues (but then again, why have the baseline text) and is a perfect foil for K and Rachel.

>at BR2049
>enjoying this kino
>girl next to me and her boyfriend munching on some popped corn, but keeping it lowkey and respectful
>I've already offered them a gracious tip of my cap for their courteousness, they've reciprocated with a bow and curtsy, as appropriate
>half way through the film
>hear girl whisper to her boyfriend "Time to toot!"
>she stands up and unbuckles her denim short shorts
>quickly yet smoothly pulls her pants and panties down, lets them hit the floor
>bends at the waist, facing the screen, bare bottom illuminated by the projector
>emits a high pitched "toot" from her butthole, hear chuckles from my fellow kinoplex denizens
>people throughout the theater stand and do likewise
>entire room is filled with a symphony of toots, some high pitched and squeaky, some low and rumbling
>eventually becomes a "call and response" sort of game
>girl notices that I'm not tooting (trying to enjoy the kino, after all)
>angles her cacophonous keister towards my face
>emits a powerful blast of wind, accompanied by a short "toot"
>mfw

What are her issues? Tears when she is saying some generic villain action lines? It never amounts to anything. You are overinterpreting things.

Extremely memorable movie. Fresh as fuck. Fuck the flaws, it's solid and vibrant. 5/5 film experience. Cant wait for the bluray.

This is one of my favourite films, but OP I can totally respect your opinion and I understand there are flaws in every script. I have to admit my hype for this film has deflated but I still adore it. Thanks for not being a dick while criticising this film.

The only thing I'm going to say is that Villeneuve took his time with the story, and I don't think Wallace needed any more scenes -- Tyrell barely had any scenes in the original Blade Runner, I don't see why Wallace should have even more than he does. He is actually much more prominent if you compare him to Tyrell.

I also very much luv'ed Luv's scenes. She had a lot going on with her emotions and internal conflicts, and on the surface it's easy to just call her one dimensional. These scenes with Luv and K affected the entire outcome of the story, because her flaw was her uncontrollable fondness for him, which lead to the demise of the whole plan. Begs the themes of the film again.

>Tfw 2049 manages to find a way to make the world of BL feel even more sad than the original.

So uh... can someone explain why this guy was in the movie?

its a terrible ugly looking failed cash grab sequel that nobody asked for with horrendous acting, zero scope, film school student tier script and middle school tier philosophical questions presented in the most dull way possible
however, due to the presence of that spic whore Sup Forumsedditors almost unanimoiusly love it, since it caters to the Sup Forums culture of "le im a tfw no gf loser" and without it these poor souls would have nothing else in their lives
this will cause them to freak out at any criticism of the movie and claim that you haven't seen it(even though unfortunately i have, since i still have nightmares from certain cringe inducing moments like the sony jukebox product placement scene, every frame that contained jared leto, every line said by jared leto etc.), or they will simply scream REDDIT even though red and dit love this garbage (as pic related proves)
overall, the whole thing is very, very sad and pathetic

>death to the waifufags
>this string of posts

You lack self-awareness.

Yeah the original made me feel like that would be a comfy place to live. This one was like, oh what a living hell.

Time to watch the three short film prequels. Can't wait!

> its a terrible ugly looking

Him, the LAPD and the Replicant Resistance all anted the child for different reasons. All of which were self serving in their own way.

Anyone else glad it failed at the box office? That way we won't get an obvious "fight the power, join the revolution" etc dumb sequel with a different director.

>generic villain action lines
if you mean the dog ones, the tears do not happen in that moment.
oh, the circus is in town

I think about the character. Is my favourite character because of its ambiguity in the motivations, not because OMGB HOEKS IS SO CUTE mr. Autismo

>this will cause them to freak out at any criticism of the movie and claim that you haven't seen it(even though unfortunately i have, since i still have nightmares from certain cringe inducing moments like the sony jukebox product placement scene, every frame that contained jared leto, every line said by jared leto etc.), or they will simply scream REDDIT even though red and dit love this garbage (as pic related proves)
This is the PTSD of being BTFO one thousand times speking

I guess. Kind of would have liked to see off world though.

Good, too many people fetishize cyberpunk without realizing that's it's a raw deal for pretty much everyone living in it. Keep in mind we also saw it from the point of view of a VERY privileged replicant K.

>owns own apartment
>has a decent job, or any job at all
>physically and mentally superior to 99% of those around him
>has money and time for leisure
>interesting enough life as a blade runner

It could've been much worse. He could've been a miner or some shit on mars.

>This is the PTSD of being BTFO one thousand times speking
im sure it was real in your mind cuck-o

It is a 10/10 Science fiction film, and for me, the best film since 2007 (though I would put a few films of 2007 better then BR2049.

The only things that I didn't like was

-the 2nd "its a miracle" flashback near the joi billboard scene,
- the slaying of the newborn replicant scene as being a little too over the top for the mood of the film.

The casting was excellent, and there is a ton of great scenes that it alone would make a film worth watching.

>The opening fight with sapper
>the birthday cake scene
>atari billboards
>if you look for it, how pervasive the joi advertising is.
>Want to go for a ride?
>You not into real girls are you?
>Seawall fight sequence
>Vegas elvis fight
>Joi buildboard
>the sex scene
>Horse scene

That it a no hold barred 150 million dollar art movie.

I was the first one to hate the idea of a blade runner continuation, but they delivered, and made a movie that gives both amazement and melancholy at the same time. It stuck with me, and stuck with my wife who grew up reading science fiction as well.

However for those who do not like science fiction, and science fiction that is not pew-pew blasters, they might not get the same impact as much of the charm is building up the campbellian hero journey and then putting the rug out, but then effortlessly rebuilding it on a smaller, personal scale.

We might not get a movie of this scale on these topics..ever.

>Pretending to dislike a movie because Reddit likes it
I couldnt even finish reading that shit you just posted too. It's so fucking bad it can't even be used as pasta. What a failure.

>Anyone else glad it failed at the box office?
No, but...

>"fight the power, join the revolution" etc dumb sequel
...Yeah, the sequel-bait was strong in this scene.

you repeated the same complains of the cuck this morning. Is either you, or someone in the same pitiful situation.

>pleb doesn't realize cinematic cut is superior cut

>pleb isn't aware that Denis has stated that he regards cinematic cut as the superior cut

The scenes between those two were shot so beatifully and sincerely.
Yet the movie constantly reminded you that she's a programmed product. It's open to interpretation wether Joi remained a souless program or evolved beyond that and became a almost a real girl, just like goose became almost a human.

>the slaying of the newborn replicant scene
I didn't get that scene at all. I know probably the only take away from that scene is, "look dis da bad guy, see how bad he is?" but was there any reason he would gut his latest model replicant for no reason? Unless he's just into that kind of stuff?

>and the whole replicant movement is just inconsequential and almost jarring in tone when they got introduced via a monologue of infodump.

They were always there. In the first scenes you see the entire Sapper unit that escaped. Then you see the baby picture with that leader woman. Then you see her telling the prostitute to keep and eye on her then the tracker. It's not that it came out of nowhere it's that the scene was a little too melodramatic for the tone of the rest of the movie. And they did serve a point in the film , thematically and to move along the plot

No people coming out of the shadows, no grand speech = perfect.

I am afraid you missed the "he looked for a working uterus and destroyed her, disappointed, like an artist with an imperfect creation" part.

>ut was there any reason he would gut his latest model replicant for no reason?

He was mad because she was yet another failed attempt at making replicant babies.

when I watched it a 2nd time I payed more attention for what leto was saying, (I didn't care much for wallace, weakest part of the film for me) but he killed it as it was unable to have kids.

I agree that the scene qulity was a bit sub-par with the rest of the movie, but is true that the resistance does not come from nowhere if one paid attention.
Also, it brings home the non-exceptionality of K and the fact that in any other movie we would have had the Hero joining and fucking Wallace.
But s not that kind of movie.

>>Pretending to dislike a movie because Reddit likes it
i never claimed that
i hate this because it's bad, not because rebbit likes it
but its understandable that you would rationalize it in you puny mind in that way, your a 2049 fan so it adds up

I'm probably being an idiot but why the fuck does Wallace actually want this so much? He seems to be able to just mass produce at will anyway so presumably he wants to just make a perfect replication of human?

>fact that in any other movie we would have had the Hero joining

yeah there are few brief moments where you think that will happen, he will reveal himself then
he will lead an attack on Wallace HQ to save dad. You could see that on his face, then the disappointment.

he wants to be god

Ohhh. Ok thanks.

Exponential growth.
Also, consider the option that he could be just rationalizing his being a Tyrellaboo and wanting to top, or at least reach the same level of mr T.
Tyrell made Rachel.

he wants to "own the stars and storm eden". If replicants can produce at an exponential rate that means humanity can conquer the stars that much faster, while he's alive at least

Nexus 9 had issues, okay and?

he wants to do a concept like the golden path and scattering from the dune series.

basic spread humanity to the stars so no matter what, we will survive.

Thanks my dudes. Just seen my first viewing and I was surprised he didn't really end up being very impactful. Thought I had missed something other than this

He really almost like the police Lt. He sets things in motion and then exits the story.

if your goal is colonizing countless planets off-world it makes much more sense to have replicant labor which is self-sustaining. over a period of decades or centuries instead of constantly having to replenish the supply of replicants new generations can replace the old as they wear out.

also it seems likely that Wallace wants to follow through and capitalize on Tyrell's achievement in order to one-up his predecessor and to feed his own ego. he'd go from creating "products" to being the godlike father of an entire new species

You have a better look at the universe and the characters. You see her struggle with the fact that something is surfacing, something that confuses her, perhaps.
You know this when you see her crying and then make a pass on K at the archive.
You realize something is within her when you see that K can go off baseline.
You see her maybe hoping for "something", on a personal and perhaps ideal level (the discussion with the police chief) then cave in to either her orders, her desire to be the best dog, or both.
She is an anti-K and an an anti-rachel and an anti-Roy (Roy 2.0 is obviously K) and this makes her interesting.

Literally
>what was her problem?

and that makes her the best character? or even a decent character?

The movie gives a lot to think about, and in many cases there are at least 2 valid interpretation. Is really a pleasure by itself, my man

He didn't look, he just monologued about how terrible it was that she wasn't fertile

It's an integral part of the movie because how else would the hooded revolutionary lady command the prostitutes to investigate K which leads to the conversation about the dead tree which lead to Joi inviting the prostitute to K's apartment which leads to the tracking pill being planted in K's coat which leads to K being tracked to Vegas which leads to him being rescued which leads to explaining the whole replicant revolution and K realizing that he is not the child.

As stated her internal struggle, the different interpretations of her actions in base of how she relate to K and Wallace, and the fact that is a foil to old and new characters.
Do you realize that Wallace has different ways to see things? He is post-human

Gonna need more out of a character than "something is there"...

rogerebert.com/balder-and-dash/tears-of-a-machine-the-humanity-of-luv-in-blade-runner-2049

A decent read posted elsewere

This post destroys any "t-the rebellion comes out of nothing"

Unless I'm blind was Leto's final scene where he talks with deckard? Seemed odd as well that he had no further resolution than that.

Internal struggle really doesn't matter if they don't affect her actions in any meaningful way to the story.

You are being obtuse now, willingly or not.

>who would actually like to discuss what the film has to offer.

It does not have much to offer except good visuals, and waifus. It's a pretty mediocre flick overall.

If her actions amount to punch the good guy why is it interesting.

Don't forget we see her in the first 10 minutes as a wanted fugitive and part of sappers crew

no it still comes out of no where, just because there are bread crumbs, no one is thinking anything about a rebellion from all those things listed.

I think it does.
There was great discussion in the first two weeks on release very unusual for Sup Forums
