He was sort of the main villain for some time before they redeemed him through kindness in the comic. The comic started in the 60s. There was an animated series as well but it was barley animated, gotta get creds for it though considering they were like 3 people making it (author, his wife and kid).

I have some comics where his portrayal is mildly villainous, but the storyarc that goes into his origins was the most memorable. IMO the parts with the wolf girl feel pretty sad and wistful even today.
