What the fuck were the Addams Family supposed to be? Are they gothics? Just weird rich people? Is there supposed to be some kind of horror element?

They were a parody of turn of the century American Old Money. 21st Century-lets wouldn't understand.
...
Eccentric billionaires. Come on, OP.
Gomez mastered capitalism in a way no one else could.
communist propaganda aimed to undermine american/christian values
They were the weird hyper-rich people who lived in everyone's neighborhood that were shrouded in mystery.
weird rich people basically.
though to an extent they were monsters seeing as they had a hand in a box and a furry midget cousin.
They are wealthy maniacs.Distinct from the Munsters, who are working class, and also are actual monsters, but much nicer people than the Addams.
The Addams Family is unique, as far as I know, for always being good whatever it appeared in. TV series, movies, comics, cartoons, none of them are the same but they are well regarded within each medium.
Been watching some of the b&w TV episodes recently, it still stands up just fine. The jokes are still funny, its fairly pacey, it looks good etc.
Just a bunch of rich weirdos. Sort of like what Sup Forums (and Stanley Kubrick in EWS) portray the jews as, minus the political trickery.
Weird people who think everyone else is weird. Their snobbery is always where the true punchline lands and the viewer enjoys pretending to agree with them. Its the classic set-up.
>mfw when millennials think the strangest part of it is that Gomez and Morticia are happily married.
Herman Munster was a black Frankenstein.
>so redpilled you have to insert muh Jews into Addams Family
sometimes you have to go back
the sets in the Addams family look great. I doubt they could even do that now on a sitcom
Addams were rich WASPy types.
and Munsters were poor immigrant types (several mentions of them being kicked out of their homeland for being monsters)
The fuck are you talking about? I was just comparing the two in order to paint a picture. It was neither a Sup Forums-post or an anti-Sup Forums-post. Sometimes, you need to relax.
underrated
Maccabe take on a sitcom
This is even more surprising when you consider it's really just a one joke premise. I don't know how they got so much mileage out of it.
Its true. I think there is also a lot to be said for that late era of b&w filming. Its forgiving in just the right way. Quite a lot of stuff from that time still looks good in a way early colour can't.
Oh, also, great casting.
how would Marvel handle this character?
Gomez would be Doctor Strange's landlord and have random relics that could solve crazy problems.
I think you're the let here, the Adams family is over 70 years old. It has nothing to do with the turn of the century
giv wensday gf
This is a good point. But then again, it has THE two jokes in it. Because they are maniacs, it has a certain amount of slapstick and physical comedy in it. And because they are both snobs and unwitting weirdos it has the other joke. So you could also say it covers all the bases.
turn of the century, i.e. 1900-ish
Personification of Pedowood.
...
turn of the last century..not this one
It best boy.
>Are they gothics?
What are "gothics" exactly?
All the jokes are just playful inversions of typical American values.
Ever seen what they looked like in real life?
>the son identifies as male
>the daughter identifies as female
>this is seen as being transphobic
'She's sooooo like me XDD'
...
Wrong show dipshit
No shit we were talking about the munsters in that post.
Carolyn Jones was a such a cutie as Morticia
I've seen a similar situation with Batman's Penguin.
I have yet to see an iteration of the Penguin that I don't like, and they're all wildly different iterations.
I've always wondered if they were gouls or vampires or something else.
None of them are afraid of death or dismemberment or other bodily harm, and its always been implied in many episodes (and the movies) that being impaled or electrocuted or going through many other fatal encounters is just something they're all used to.
I've always wanted to know, but at the same time I love how ambiguous it all is.
>Just weird rich people?
Yep. Their specific eccentricity is their love for morbid shit. They're supposed to be the ultimate "weird neighbors".
The horror elements stem from that, namely their monstrous butler Lurch, Cousin Itt (who probably isn't even human), their practicing witch grandmother, and Thing, which is a fucking sentient hand.
The only bad Addams family thing I've ever seen is Reunion, and even that brought us fedora tippy meme man.
I LOVE Carolyn Jones in this show, I always wished I could meet my own Morticia. So feminine, so sexy, so demure.
They are mere eccentrics, with a long lived history, not a care in the world, living on more money that they ever care to keep track of.
this is good bait
Morticia was until something vague happened the daughter of Grandmama, making her at least a second generation witch (though whether she practices is another story).
Gomez has immense wealth, and was a multi-billionaire even during the days where a single million could buy a decent country. Add this net worth to an unshakable enthusiasm, nigh-boundless energy, and a love of bizarre schemes, and he quickly became an athletic, acrobatic mastermind. Essentially Batman without any of the angst.
Even then his history is pretty hazy. Charles Addams made a point to even question Gomez's marriage to Morticia.
He was apparently a sickly kid who only got his energy when he met his soul mate. He studied law, virtually to become the worst lawyer in the world, and loves listing off the people behind bars that he "defended".
He also comes from very old money, though had an aquired head for business in his own right.
Same here bro, someone who has a playful 'ride or die' kind of out look on life, a little dark but still sweet. I'm going to post some gifs
they couldn't be killed or hurt because they were rich.
...
...
QUIPS
the thing you put before -let is supposed to be the thing they're lacking. so a "21st Centruy-let" would be someone who knows nothing about the 21st Century.
>we'll never get an Addams family courtroom drama parody where Gomez finds hilarious ways to lose his own cases
she is, to this day, the sexiest character ever!
...
I'd watch this. I'd watch the fuck out of this.
>the virgin Wednsday fan
>not the chad patrician Morticia fan
Its like youve never fucked an old goth broad. Youre missing out my man.
What about the telltale version?
Personally I HATED that they gave him a goofy as fuck penguin gas mask. Just give him the tophat, a trench coat and a monocle and cane, god damn it.
>wiki description
>interprets Addams Family as liberal political statement deconstructing traditional America
You leftists are psychopaths.
There are some styles in aesthetics, personality, looks and character that feel like they don't age. She's got it.
Fucking hell, I would play the fuck out of a TellTale Addams Family Game. It'd be even more amazing if we could have the dungeon/trap building mechanic from the PS2 game Trap. To capture people trying to break into the mansion. It'd be awesome.
What I find funny is if a group of rich eccentric goths moved into a neighborhood today, someone here would find them and it would be ten thousand threads a day about how "autistic" they are.
Never played the Telltale Batman, but it wouldn't surprise me that they'd be among the very few who'd fuck him up.
Even Rocksteady put a pretty cool spin on him with the broken bottle stuck in his eye and the cockney accent.
Whatever Telltale did sounds fucking retarded.
I actually like him, hes young, skinny as fuck, cokney as hell and very snarky, but yeah, they give him a silly fucking penguin gasmask at one point.
Gib story pls
Oil, black lipstick, lots of sucking, riding with the boots STILL on.......
Its like a Type O Negative video mixed with a porno.
Pretty sure this is just John Constantine with a goofy mask
Like I said, missing the hat and cane combo for sure.
This is why I don't like the term lanklet
Who would you cast in a modern day Addams Family movie or show?
Cousin IT was the only one of them that was really supernatural. The rest of them were just creepy.
>forgetting the literal disembodied hand
I think it's just the cartoon physics and not meant to imply anything supernatural, although they being the only ones with this power is supernatural in itself I guess.
They are the girls' side of The Simpsons
I always thought they are the good vampires
The premise is simple.
You ever look at an eccentric but decrepit house and wonder what kind of people would live there? The house that children tell stories about at night?
Well it's that, but it's a family instead of an old person.
>as liberal political statement deconstructing traditional America
It kinda was, considering that they were consistently demonstrated stronger family values than any of their neighbors.
they are the opposite of the white fence family. Which are super normie and love life and cherry pie. Yet the adams are based af
WHOOMP
THE ADDAMS FAMILY
THERE IT IS
what the fuck were they thinking
Are you unfamiliar with the 1990's user?
Well, it was a New Yorker cartoon once upon a time, "deconstructing" humor is their thing.
Daily reminder that Addams family are actually feminist and supports minority races
So based, he bids on his own shit, gets into a bidding war with himself AND his wife, and probably impregnates her in front of everyone, too.
indeed. I'm always keen to point out much sexier she is in the original tv show if it comes up. her appearance, her attitude. everything.
