Where did all the OG Golden Age heroes go and why aren't they implemented more?

Where did all the OG Golden Age heroes go and why aren't they implemented more?

Because they're old and funny looking.

Alan Scott is young and gay now, don't know if that went over well.

They work best when tied to WW2 and its becoming harder to justify tying them to that era and remaining active when WW2 vets are on their way out. There's only so many aging workarounds you can do.

Johnny Thunder is in a mental ward.

They're coming back soon.
Jay's been teased, and so has the Ray if you read between the lines.

>Alan Scott is young and gay now, don't know if that went over well.

It didn't.

The JSA returning was heavily hinted during Rebirth.
We are probably going to ignore those young posers from Nu52.

I liked how Jay got his powers. Linking him to gods/magic was cool

oh so suddenly frozen in time by supervillains isn't a good enough excuse.

i loved the old in-universe explanation of HUAC putting them out of business

JSA + Hickman. this has to happen DC.

1) they're the Justice Society now
2)they don't sell as much as the Justice League

Is this like a retcon? How do they explain Jade and Obsidian?

Doesn't exist and isn't his kid anymore

On that subject, how does marvel keep justifying Magneto being a holocaust survivor? Why haven't they rewritten him as some other persecuted minority?

It's especially annoying since everything else is on a sliding time scale but that one thing is not.

Earth-2 Alan is gay.

The Main Earth JSA all disappeared or retired with wiped memories and should be back soon.

Magneto most likely keeps himself immortal by fucking around with the iron in his blood.

JSA is so cool
A lot more interesting than a lot of regular stuff

He's been de-aged before.

Take a step back and try to understand how alternate realities and changed timelines work. It's a universe where the JSA is the modern team not a historic one. Everyone is in their 20s. It also largely went off the rails like 12 issues in when Robinson left and isn't worth thinking about.

The only thing they have to do is write in a deaging before he fights the X-Men the first time. Other than that there's no conflict.

>Where did all the OG Golden Age heroes go

Earth 2.

>and why aren't they implemented more?

Because New 52 decided to wipe out continuity in an ultimately futile attempt to gain new readers, and all superheroics got smushed into a maximum of "the last five years"

If anyone cares, Wildcat and Liberty Belle are in the DC little girls franchise.

So how did Jay Garrick fit in the DC timeline? Was it like a legacy thing with Barry or was it an alt timeline?

In 20 years Nazi Germany will be 100 years old. They can't keep that shit up forever. Sooner or later, Magneto will have to be reinvented.

...

You still haven't explained why it's a problem. He has gotten deaged multiple times. He just needs to have one deaging also before he fights them.

I thought they retconned it to be Magnetos secondary mutation was slow aging?

Why is Johns allowed to shill his faves to children?

>allowed

What makes you think anyone but you is opposed?

he's gone too far is all I'm saying

>Liberty Belle's costume remains completely unchanged

to me the issue is that mutants existing/being widely known of that far back makes it strange that it's only now that the mutants are facing persecution. not changing magneto's age means that the government is implied to sit on it's ass until the creation of the xmen

Too far? Those are all the fucking mainstream versions of major characters. (...and Katana.)

If you want it to be different, go back in time 20 years and force Bruce Timm to use Cassandra Cain.

Well fair enough I guess, though I don't find it to be that odd. Taking care of a freak every now and then but only acting once they start to militarize makes enough sense to me. Or I could see fictional bureaucracy reasoning in that way.

Nope it not retconned

Jay Garrick was from an alternate universe. He was The Flash of the 40s and he punched Hitler.

Barry read his comics in the 50s and that inspired him to be The Flash. Flash of Two Worlds established the Multiverse and stated that Jay was from Earth 2. It also established the DC trope of comicbooks that appear in the comics are actually just subconscious renditions of shit happening in other universes.

I'd love to

And then Crisis on Infinite Earths changed it so Jay and the JSA were always heroes on the same Earth as Barry, who were active during WWII but they'd retired in the 50's due to McCarthy and the HUAC.

So Barry went from stealing his name from a comic to stealing his name from an old dude.

After CoIE when the Earths were merged into one, the history was that the Golden Age characters who fought in WWII were forced into retirement by the government (similar to Watchmen).

Therefore the Golden Age characters could exist in the same timeline as the modern ones.

However, as time went on this became a problem because of the sliding timeline getting further and further away from WWII. So the JSA were deaged, and then during Zero Hour they were effectively killed off.

Eventually they were brought back again and had a much bigger presence with Johns' JSA series.

With the New 52, the entire JSA was written out of existence so 1) they could avoid complicated explanations for their age and 2) DC absolutely insisted that Superman be the first superhero in the new timeline. Earth-2 was created to have young versions of the JSA set in the modern day. However that comic became so bad that they are literally destroying its universe.

One of the big promises of Rebirth is that the classic JSA will be returning in some way.

>One of the big promises of Rebirth is that the classic JSA will be returning in some way.
>in some way.

specifically they have to undo Johnny Thunder using his genie to hide them and it will likely be a version similar to the Johns one since he's in charge

This. Magneto was deaged to being a baby then reaged to physical peak (early 30ish) albeit with silver hair in canon. There's not really a problem yet.

Xavier afaik has been retconned from WWII vet to Korean vet maybe to Vietnam vet.

>Earth-2 was created to have young versions of the JSA set in the modern day. However that comic became so bad that they are literally destroying its universe.
Ouch.

But yeah, I'm looking forward to the JSA being reintroduced in Rebirth.

...

Heh, dub-dubs of truth.

Her costume is actually really fucking clever, that logo with the lightning/crack duality is genius.

Has Jay ever died or does he get to watch all the young blood kick the bucket before him?

>2) DC absolutely insisted that Superman be the first superhero in the new timeline

Wait, so why was it that when Superman appeared in the New 52, they made it a point to compare him to The Authority's Apollo, as if Apollo was already an experienced superhero by the time Supes came out?

So what happened in Earth-2 that made it so shitty? All I know is they have young JSA and a black Superman.

The premise was a post-apocalyptic world wrecked by Darkseid.

So, nothing at all like the original Earth-2.

The reboot was an extremely rushed, last-minute idea. Editorial hadn't figured out what they wanted and weren't communicating with each other to figure it out, resulting in an inconsistent mess.

It sounds like a neat concept but no doubt the actual execution went to hell.

Same thing that happens to every secondary universe when there isn't a great mind guiding it, hack creators constantly causing destruction because the status quo doesn't matter.

I wouldn't mind some series or elseworld where there's some impending unstoppable apocalypse that kills the A-listers right off the bat in some in vain attempt at averting the disaster.

Then the rest of the story is just the other heroes and villains coping/freaking out/coming to terms with the inevitable end.

just read 52 again

The New 52 decided everything had to be fresh hotness and that meant wiping out any sense of history or legacy.

>It's a universe where the JSA is the modern team not a historic one. Everyone is in their 20s.
I mean just look at this embarrassment of an idea. Who the fuck cares about the JSA as yet another bunch of boring 20somethings?

Remember the first episode of Swamp Thing where Superman has a heartfelt conversation with Alec about death and resurrection and then it turned out that the Death of Superman hadn't happened so Superman was lying to Alec?
Nobody knew what the fuck was happening for at least the first two years of New52 which is why we got shit like Midnighter getting raped by space owls.

One of the advantages of having a secret identity, or alias, is you can disappear quickly and will only exist in memory.

>Who the fuck cares about the JSA as yet another bunch of boring 20somethings?

People who followed the comic till Robinson left.

I hate how DC just can't keep to their guns anymore. First, they half undid crisis in infinite earths and reintroduced the multiple earths so they could tell whatever story they could again, then they copped out and re-crisised everything with new 52, then they half undid new 52 and reintroduced everything again.

This shit be whack.

On July seventh of this year, Johnny Thunder will celebrate his one hundredth birthday.

>Jay has speedforce keeping him alive.
>Alan has the Starheart keeping him alive.
>Wildcat has his nine lives to keep him alive.
>Hourman has some time travel mumbo jumbo and also possible after-effects of prolonged Miraclo keeping him alive.
>Doctor Fate has Nabu keeping him alive.
>Johnny Thunder is aging normally.
>The Specter is a ghost.
>Hawkman has reincarnation shit.
>Atom, Doctor Mid-Nite, Starman, Sandman, Mister Terrific, and Black Canary are all already dead.

New 52 was a mistake.

Every time you see the toilet seat DC logo, stay away.

I thought Johnny died of crazy in an old people home?

I always thought comic companies were dumb about this, there is nothing preventing them from releasing flashback issues with new past events to showcase characters that are dead or whatever in the current continuity. You don't need to extend a character's life to keep telling stories about them.

Atomic robo is the only comic I know off that frequently just tells stories in the past when it wants to use a character that is dead in the present or whatever.

I thought the 9 lives thing was just a play on his name but no. He really has 9 lives. Huh.

>I thought Johnny died of crazy in an old people home?

Pre-Flashpoint he died and the Ultra-Humanite took over his body or something and then his spirit combined with the Thunderbolt to create Johnny Thunderbolt.

Post-Flashpoint he was seen in the Rebirth special as a ninety-nine year old man in an old folks home.

I still can't believe they got away with it

Knew this shit would fail since day 1. Why would DC trust Robinson with an entire universe. Motherfucker killed the most popular characters in the first issue for shock value and when the sales tanked, he had a bitchfit and left DC altogether

They could've just as easily tucked it away and introduced the JSA earth as the new earth 2. This obsession with destroying everything you don't plan to use in the next two years needs to stop.

Agreed. Suppose all we can hope for now is that JSA gets restored down the line without it devolving into the trainwreck that was Earth 2.

I really want an 'Earth 2' kind of comic with WWII with the JSA as WWII vets, I know there's is an E2 comic right now but its not the same at all.

Wait but are current Powergirl and Huntress still the Earth-2 Supergirl and the daughter of Bruce?
One of the only ideas that I personally liked from the NuEarth-2 stunt.

Peegee has only shown in Sixpack and Dogwelder and Huntress is daughter of Bertinelli family, so, no.

>JSA
>Freedom Fighters
>All Star Squadron
I do miss some of these crazy Golden Age heroes though.

I will not rest until the Young All-Stars are reintroduced.

Robinson threw a fit because DC wanted to give Taylor a Earth 2 Batman book and he didn't want anything else playing with his sandbox, he left DC and didn't leave any notes behind.

Taylor got the book and continued some of the stuff, introduced some OC's like Robo Lois or hacker Jimmy (he always wanted to write Superman) and he also introduced Black Superman, Val Zod.

Book only really went to shit after DC started a weekly called Earth 2 Worl's End where Darkseid destroyed the Earth, and we had all around bad writing by Daniel Wilson (who got the follow up book #1 but fucked it up so bad they fired him), Bennet and there's someone else I can't remember at the moment.

They killed a lot of characters, ruined Big Barda, ruined Earth 2's Doctor Fate (I still don't know how the Helm of Nadu went to prime earth and gave us the new Doctor Fate series), it was one of the worst books DC put out.

Nowadays Abnett was trying to undo some of the damage but I haven't read it since October, his run was decent, but no matter what you do with Earth 2 I think it's scorched earth just like the DCCU.

>when the sales tanked
The sales only tanked after he left you fucking retard. Stop Trinity wanking

>that logo
is she sponsored by taco bell ro something

It's the liberty bell, because she's Liberty Belle. You do know about the liberty bell, right? The stupid cracked bell americans masturbate all over?

Alan and Jay both outlived their successors

The sales were fine while he was on it, they only plummeted once the writing got incredibly shitty after DC drove him off

they are relics, and should be forgotten. Having the justice league be the first superhero team is way better and more organic.

I agree. Also, Marvel should never use Captain America or Namor again, because having the Fantastic 4 be the first superhero team is way better and more organic.

>Hal
>Smart

OVER THE LINE!

The toilet seat logo still represents current DC beautifully.

Oh man. Earth-2 was so, sooooo bad. Everything about it was fucking shit, especially when they started using Magic: The Gathering as inspiration.

There's two Huntresses running around.
Helena Wayne on Earth-2, and Helena Bertenelli on Earth-0.

I think they should go with the alternate Earth thing but with the classic JSA, not the New 52 versions.

You can't exactly be stupid and get into a position to fly planes. He may make stupid decisions, but he's got a lot of street smarts and knows it'll all work out.

He's also easy to manipulate and a little gullible

Probably why he's such a slut too

Also the crack is lightning shaped because she used to be one of Flash's sidekicks.

That doesn't make sense, it's the same as her mother's costume and her mother wasn't a Flash sidekick

For Marvel I feel like they do a decent job of keeping golden age characters involved. The Original Human Torch, Namor, the original Vision, and others have been in modern comics and have decent roles in story telling.

DC did away with them in New 52 and rebooted them into their own continuity, unfortunately after the initial writer for earth-2 left it quickly devolved into shit destruction porn on the scale of Marvel's Ultimate Universe, eventually it became so bad that it was practically unsalvageable and now with rebirth they're reintroducing them to Earth-0.

>The stupid cracked bell americans masturbate all over?

take your bait back to Sup Forums

>Hourman
I thought their were multiple hour men and he was a legacy character.

Do you even hypercisis bro?

There are, but the original one ended up in the present along with his son iirc

The third Hourman was a robot

>The third Hourman was a robot

I clearly need to read more comics.

You do.

Johns did a ritualistic sacrifice and burn them all so he could be cco

To his regret.
