The point of the joke was two parts:
1. Just like in the past Mormons will never really be an accepted part of society, especially the fundamentalists.
2. Just like in the past, these fundamentalists would go way out to dangerous areas to found colonies, just as they did when they fled civilization and went to dangerous hostile native American infested areas like Utah.
Its a joke that requires about a 6th graders understanding of US history and culture.
