It's definitely up there. It understood the movie's theme, but how did the fable at the beginning relate to the rest of the movie. I imagine it's meant to hint at some of the themes in the rest of the movie, but there don't seem to be any similarities aside from each one being ambiguous if you choose to see it that way. That being said, it kind of defeats the point of the film.

What is No Country for Old Men?

This is the most jewish movie Ive ever watched.

This. It's to the point that I don't think you can actually understand it if you aren't jewish.

Also best coen's is Miller's Crossing

It definitely is, as a Jew I've never seen a movie that felt so authentic. Every single thing about it is perfect in that respect.

Fargo is my favorite but this one is damn good too.

The scenes where the guy told his son to shoot the jew and when the guy was trying to hold a heavy ass torah were funny as fug

The cohen brothers most overrated movie that barely ranks somewhere around the middle.

A serious man, barton fink and Millers crossing are all so much better.

Its shit like this that makes the Cohen Brothers great. They have no problem laughing and ridiculing their own people.

>Cohen

It's Coen, ya smuggenahs

sorry m8 but that'd be O Brother Where Art Thou

You mean Hail, Caesar!

>Kohn, Cohn, Coen, Cohen, Kohen, Cohan
Like it matters, we all know it's the same name

you mean Literally, Who?

>the point of the film
What was it though?

Shit happens and you cant blame higher powers for your shitty situation

But shit happened just when the protagonist jew chose to break his code. The point just as well can be that God is cruel and capricious and punishes people severely by entirely arbitrary measures.

See these are both valid interpretations and that's kind of the point, the movie conflicts with itself because there is no resolution. It's an exploration of how you make sense of the world and the questions we ask ourselves. The answer is always fleeting and leaves you with dissapointment, the question is what matters. Our protag is literally asking throughout the movie 'what is going on'. Might be a bit of a draw but I think the antenna on the roof is supposed to symbolize this also.

It's best explained in the scene with the second Rabbi. The guy waxes on about how a dentists found what seemed to be Hebrew markings in the teeth of one of his patients. The dentist descends in mania because he was convinced his god was trying to tell him something when in actuality, it most likely was just a fluke. The protagonist is Jewish for the same reason he's a mathematician - he believes there's order and logic to the world. The whole movie is about him trying to grasp why his life is falling apart when there is no reason.

i liked the beginning, whats some other shtetl kino?

Fiddler on the Roof, obviously.

yeah im hoping for lesser known

maybe not their absolute best but i think its certainly their most personal film

Youre a turd. No country was a great adaptation

>I don't think you can actually understand it if you aren't jewish.

Yes you can. In fact I recommend it specifically to understand the jewish relationship to God, next to "God on Trial".

The fact that the protagonist acts like a goy in not at all understanding the lack of connection between doing good and being rewarded helps the average viewer get it.

The last 30 minutes from the movie got a little weird and the ending lost me.

The Coens always do that with me.

I like Fargo and The Big Lebowsky though.

My nigga, dont know why is it so fucking underrated

>(((best)))

I actually agree, it's a work of true brilliance

great explanations.

i remember trying to find an explanation online could never find a good one

it introduced the concept of a dybbuk which is what Sy Abelman was to the protagonist. it also forced the viewer to "accept the mystery" (wink) by making you ask what the point of that scene was.

It is impossible to distingtuish between;

>A Serious Man
>Inside Llewyn Davis
>Barton Fink
>Fargo
>The Big Lebowski
>No Country For Old Men

As their best film. If it wasn't for the terrible "Getting Punched Down The Stairs" scene, you could add Miller's Crossing to that list.

please...accept mystery.

I understood it and I'm not a Jew (got tested to prove it because of repeated accusations). I did marry one though.

this is the only movie ever ever stopped watching halfway through in my entire life

thankfully it taught me to ignore rotten tomatoes scores

This is a good review by a Catholic Priest. He's a bit preoccupied with the religious aspect, and I think he doesn't acknowledge that much of the Coen's work is often just absurdist. But it's pretty spot on.

I've never watched A Serious Man. Should I?

Do you like Coen Brother's movies?

Absolutely, assuming you aren't a memeing brainlet, it left a very profound and unique feeling with me.

Der Golem
Inglourious Basterds

Yes.
I'll have to check it out then. I've also never watched The Man Who Wasn't There.

A Superior Man

Saw it for the first time recently and it felt like Fargo tv show was just ripping it off.

WRONG

Like the big lebowski and o brother where art thou, they fall into the heavier purely entertainment side. Although really well made great movies, they just feel limited in some way when you don't have as much depth as some of their other movies.

Can someone explain to me what the fucking meaning of this movie was? Is it just a simple movie poking fun/homage to the 50s golden age of hollywood or what?

Underrated post.

>If it wasn't for the terrible "Getting Punched Down The Stairs" scene, you could add Miller's Crossing to that list
What's wrong with it? I've never seen that complaint before.

t. brainlet

The Big Lebowski is actually one of their most complex plots. It's just that every scene is so entertaining on its own that it takes a backseat.

And religious allegories

commies are dumb

That and Hollywood socialists/activists. I'm honestly surprised they managed to get Clooney to do it considering he's basically playing a character that mocks people like him.
