What is the appeal of this series at all?
I know, it has nice characters and pretty cool concepts but the story telling is pretty standard

Continuity and a central plot in western cartoons is rare, so when it happens everyone loses their shit, even if it's not great.

It's kinda funny and it came out at a time where there was a dearth of DEEPESTLORE

It had a realistic representation of kids acting like dicks without being too edgy. Felt nostalgic.

People thought it was deeper than it actually was. They spent years going over what the wheel meant, and in the end it didn't get used at all.

>the story telling is pretty standard
The very fact that there's storytelling at all is the big draw. Episodes link together and work towards a bigger, coherent plot.

That's not something that was usually expected in a cartoon a few years ago.

All of this decade's "lore" cartoons seem to have turned into huge messes. They draw you in with cool presentation but the actual mystery they presented is contrived, poorly planned, or not as cool as it seemed.

Mystery Inc. was cool.

Judging by the threads created every day, is the porn.

Everything has porn

>at the end of the show everybody has changed in some way, and only Mabel is still a bitch

It drew people in with its Twin Peaks/X-Files references and mystery-related stuff, then it became a huge phenomenon when it became clear it had a plot. Pay mind that cartoons generally don't have an overarching plot except for a few action shows that still suffer from obvious comics-related stigmas. GF has the merit of being the first to carry a whole story through (unlike Adventure Time which has no set goal), and its standard storytelling is actually a huge factor to its popularity: the fact that it was written by people with classic 80s/90s sensibilities made it more accessible to the mainstream audience.
While it does have moments that could have been handled better, the fact that it speaks to the viewer's guts and being one of the first of its kind made people love it anyway.

Meh, it was obvious that it was just a generic "all main characters are bound by fate and shit" and that's what it was at the end.

It's funny, has an ongoing plot with DEEPEST LORE, and looks nice.

Pacifica's massive breasts

It's almost like everyone but Mabel was effected by the events and consequences of the story and were forced to develop.

But Mabel got to keep her pet pig, so that's just as good, I guess.

>but the story telling is pretty standard
Not always. GF is clearly postmodern as there are many occasions of deconstruction or just further development, be it the plot (episodes like "Boss Mabel" or "Boys Crazy"), or the characters themselves (Pacifica, McGucket, Robbie, even Bill, judging by Hirsch's words, was designed with a backstory, which we might've gotten if the show lasted 3 seasons). Even in the cliched finale, it's still to be seen in some places. The wheel turned out to be a subversion of viewers' expectations as well as a point in development of Stan's character.
As far as storytelling goes, I guess my main disappointment was the Season 1 finale. While Weirdmageddon still had something interesting to offer, Gideon Rises felt much more formulatic.

According to Sup Forums I believe, that the appeal is twincest and hateing Mable

I don't know about everyone else here, but it's always been a challenge for me to find any character attractive on this show. Wendy's got a stick for a body, Mabel and Pacifica are little girls, and Candy and Grenda aren't even close contenders. Adventure Time and Regular Show have the most similar character designs to GF, yet they still manage to have some genuine waifus. Maybe it's because the characters look too cute.

Pic related and .GIFfany are probably the only ones who caught my attention.

>He doesn't like lolis
What are you, gay?

I didn't watch GF, so I didn't know from where Pacifica was.

But judging for the porn-arts that are posted here EVERY DAY, I thought she was some super curvy girl in some lewd cartoon that I missed somehow. Imagined my reaction when I discovered that she is a blonde bean.

People can sexualize a squirrel here.

Also . I kinda feel sorry I didn't have cartoons like GF in my childhood, that pandered to the kids and teenagers successfully, instead of trying to be hip and cool and ending up being cringy.

And of course, all the ciphers and mystery stuff. In fact, that was the main reason why I was putting off watching GF for a very long time. I knew that there would be something that would require having more than 22 minutes of your free time. Part of the charm was that after every episode, there was a message that you had to decipher. I kinda sucked at finding the code words for the Vigenère cipher in season 2, but I still tried to do it, sometimes rewatching the episodes. It didn't really teach me anything new except for a couple of ciphers I guess, but it still brought a somewhat fun and interactive element. And trying to find out what was written in the third journal using sheer symbol frequency was pretty awesome, too.
