But it's just grotesque. Especially in the case of Cricket. Like, why would a man being horribly scarred and having his life ruined by the same group of people for years be funny?

Cricket is a special case because the sunny cast are so horrible that anyone they come in contact with devolves the more they interact. That show makes it work, but I agree that in Clarence it has gone too far.

Cricket is the one instance of a character of that type which I find genuinely funny if only because of the increasing absurdity of his situation and the fact that it perfectly fits with the style of the show.
