>We’ve been wondering what Archie Comics may be replacing Sonic The Hedgehog with…
>In a press release, and probably being talked about at ComicsPRO right now, Marvel and Archie have announced a publishing collaboration. No, not Punisher Meets Archie 2, but Marvel Comics Digest, a collection of Marvel’s all-ages titles packaged in a digest format and sold on the newsstand, in “big box” stores as well as comic retailers.ix to be published each year, with four in 2017 star
>Six to be published each year, with four in 2017 starting with MARVEL COMICS DIGEST: Starring The Amazing Spider-Man.
>Others starring Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and the X-Men are to follow.
>The story of American comic books through the latter half of the twentieth century was away from the newsstand into the speciality comic book store. Archie is the only main comics brand that has maintained a newsstand and supermarket presence. Could this be a long demanded start of a walk back away from the specialist market towards the real mainstream?
>>Losing Sonic so they can push the already over pushed Marvel characters.
This is how you get people sick of characters.
Brandon Moore
heh, I remeber that one, I think I own it
Jordan Peterson
>Could this be a long demanded start of a walk back away from the specialist market towards the real mainstream? More like another desperate gesture from a dying publisher.
Caleb Powell
Fuck off dude, Diamond is cancer.
Isaiah Lee
Yeah, I'm sure that selling like shit has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Cameron Nguyen
Who cares, I'll take anything that signals the death of Diamond as a distributor. Fucking cunts.
Jace Russell
But does this mean that Marvel is leaving Diamond too?
Gavin Hernandez
Probably not right now.
Parker Lopez
I was sure of that; otherwise they wouldn't need Archie for this. >not right now And maybe not ever?
Also, what books are we talking about exactly? Reprints? If so, this must be the only good idea they've had in decades.
Asher Bell
wait if they're doing this why didn't they make the tv deal with Marvel Television?
Parker Thompson
The X-Men and not the Inhumans? Maybe there really is a thaw.
This makes sense, Marvel's digests have had trouble in the past but Archie has survived as a company by being good at selling digests.
Blake Russell
Unless they're competitively priced (they won't be) this will fail. Why the fuck would you pour money in to the dying newsstand?
Jace Anderson
>let's put comics back in supermarkets after we've destroyed our readerbase with years of horrible liberal pandering
Oh this should work swimmingly
Blake Wood
So are these just reprints?
Jaxson Roberts
Unless they are starting a new all ages line-up just for this, yes.
Easton Baker
>Rich still supporting the cancellation rumor even when it looks like it's just ANOTHER hiatus while Archie and Sega hash out negotiations
Nicholas Williams
>Marvel ruins Sonic
Is there anything Disney won't destroy?
Austin Roberts
Well, Archie has kind of the same thing going. Their current line is almost all aimed at teenagers and older, and is somewhat socially liberal.
The digests is where their traditional fanbase - young kids and parents who want something non-threatening for their kids to read - hangs out.
Noah Hall
>somewhat socially liberal. True; they listen to Ramones and KISS, just like any other rich white kid.
Ian Moore
I'd rather have it dead than go to Marvel. IDW or bust
Aiden Gomez
Does their gay character, Kevin Keller, appear in the digests? Of course they have tens of thousands of stories to reprint before that.
Jaxson Bailey
>Also, what books are we talking about exactly? Reprints?
Reprints of all ages titles which makes me think it'll be the Marvel Universe and Marvel Adventure imprints. However I don't believe they've had anything X-Men or Wolverine related in either imprint.
So perhaps it'll be 616 stuff from the 90's and early 00's?
Daniel Adams
It will probably push Marvel in a direction to pander to the sort of people who buy supermarket tabloids. I hope you're ready for tons of celebrity crossovers.
Charles Perry
>somewhat socially liberal >somewhat
C'mon.
John Collins
>Marvel Universe Adventures I'm familiar with, but what's this?
Andrew Allen
And JJJ as the host of every comic!
Ryan Robinson
The Disney XD shows in comic book form.
Jaxon Williams
I'd be okay with that, actually.
Luke James
Ugh.
Luke Murphy
They did an all-ages line of X-Men comics in the '00s: X-Men First Class (original 5), Wolverine First Class (Wolverine and Kitty) and Uncanny X-Men First Class (untold tales of the All-New All-Different lineup). I'm guessing it'll draw on those.
Ian Sanchez
Wonder if this means Marvel are gonna get first dibs at their character library when Archie shuts up shop
Ryan Cruz
Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four already had been reprinted as digests; let's hope they do it again.
>when Archie shuts up shop So, never? But if Marvel did that, would they also get the !mpact imprint?
Charles Howard
Might be cool, at least if they pull out some old stuff, like a good little one issue Ditko story.
Alexander Wood
So who do we think would get Sabrina? Marvel or DC?
Adam Diaz
>But if Marvel did that, would they also get the !mpact imprint? The old MLJ shit? Yes. In fact, those characters are probably the only reason Marvel or DC would contemplate buying up the Archie character library. And they'd probably lease the Riverdale library to Boom.
Adam Powell
>So, never? Considering that their company had to resort to a kickstarter and shat the bed supremely hard for the past few decades, it's not a matter of if, but when
Dominic Garcia
I say this because !mpact was also a DC imprint.
Cameron James
Dunno user, they still look too big to die.
Jack Cook
I think this is great. I'm 19 myself and I could never enjoy comics as a kid because I was trapped in a small town with no comic book store and no credit card for digital. Kids ARE interested in comics because of their exposure to heroes through movies and television, they just don't have accessible means of reading them. I hope this leads to a full return to newstands for comics.
Brandon Moore
Which was licensed out to DC from Archie. So all properties would be owned by Arche
Grayson Adams
Yeah, but their TV show did enough business for Warner Brothers to give them a development deal for more EDGY Archie parodies with the Archie characters.
That might also complicate matters if Disney wants to buy out Archie.
Grayson Wright
Everything should go to DC. Marvel would probably give Archie the Ultraverse or Crossgen treatment.
Mason Hall
Marvel. Disney would probably kill for another Sabrina adaptation for ABC
Angel Flores
I'm 28 and actually remember the comic racks I relied on disappearing... first the one at my local pharmacy, then the local grocery store carried X-Men for a while when the first movie came out, but ONLY X-Men. And then I moved to another town that had a comic shelf at the local pharmacy as late as 2006, but that disappeared soon afterwards.
The point is, I bought comics whenever I could as a kid and teen and would've bought even more if they'd been around more often.
Bentley Bell
Warner is doing all their TV stuff, while this is just a deal with Marvel. Warner's got more control.
Xavier Brooks
>a comic shelf at the local pharmacy as late as 2006 I remember seeing one in 1996
Liam Ward
Someone post the picture of their offices
Benjamin Rogers
I got you senpai
Luke Turner
>Perlmutter's Marvel.jpg
William Evans
>We’ve been wondering what Archie Comics may be replacing Sonic The Hedgehog with…
It's time to share this. By the way, Disney would be parodied by Kamen Rider as the villain. Imagine that, the Kamen rider motif cartoons insect hybrid. The franchise going full circle.
Landon Carter
But it isn't.
Brody Johnson
THIS
Noah Stewart
Diamond is a lesser evil compared to Marvel.
Wyatt Mitchell
...
Jaxon Foster
They already tried it. It was called Spider-Man Megazine. It BOMBED. And that was back in the 90s when there was a MUCH larger audience for comics.
Sebastian Rogers
I hope Archie gets Punished for making that terrible joke
Sebastian Johnson
>It BOMBED.
It ended in 1995. Back when Marvel was having major problems internally, and grocery stores and the like were starting to reduce the amount of comics they were selling.
The difference this time with the Archie deal is that they're having someone else handle it so they don't lose as much money.
Jacob Mitchell
neck yourself unironically, you piece of corporate worshiping fanatical trash
