I don't know, it seems like he didn't need to "defend" eva
Can you repeat the question?
dunno'
What're ya asking?
Was on Toonami, it counts.
Most more of this asuka pls

Well, I read it. And like any time I read an analysis of a work I come away feeling like I've been watching a guy jack off in front of a mirror.
tl;dr it for me, I'm not giving them traffic.
>the scene, as many scenes of sexuality in anime, as a whole, are little more than ‘fan service’ from the director, as a kind of wish-fulfillment for his demographic. It is a decision, then, that bears little artistic import, for such things are both quite far from recognizable, human behavior, as well as a mere trope within the genre, revealing how poor — especially ca. 1997 — anime’s own allusiveness really was. Always referring back to itself, to its own story, its own universe, rather than any deeper thing ‘out there,’ the idea was (and still is, in many regards) that we are dealing with genre, first, as opposed to art of its own accord.
>This is a mistake, and one that sets up limits to what is ought to be limitless: self-imposed limits that, after a while, train people to interpret things from the same filter, over and over again. This is because genre, literary conventions, and many of the so-called artistic ‘rules’ are an illusion, with the belief that one must follow them (or else!) a delusion. Too often, essays fear to branch out, or even experiment with the structure of their paragraphs; novels go from A to B to C, with no care for the how of such a trip, much less the reasons for it; and consumers, for all of their demands for what should be, forget what it actually is, and can be: communication, which brings all these other wants and desires under its umbrage, thus deepening them, providing a sense of purpose, and only demands that they’re done well. It is, I’d think, a liberating thing — to be able to do precisely as you wish. Yet I’ve not seen too many otaku take solace in this fact.
This guy is literally attacking the idea of tropes in fiction.
Holy Lord. I've spent the last half hour watching this guy disappear up his own ass.
That's not how it works.
This guy's writing style is so fucking obnoxious.
The best summary of why Eva is so good is douchebag's comparison of the original series to the Rebuilds.
This is mostly wank.
tl;dr
Utena > Eva
Nadia > Eva
Rahxephon > Eva
Tropes are dumb though when you treat them as a given.
TvTropes in particular is a full on cargo cult of fiction that worships recurring patterns in media but can't say anything about their meaning or use.
This. A lot of BvS defense is frame around that logic, that every bad scene supports a trope ergo that makes the scene in the film good even if it makes no sense or hurts the narrative.
BvS is good for reasons completely unrelated to tropes.
>Rahxephon > Eva
Jesus, how much of a pleb to you have to be to think this?
I mean, the others are arguable, but Rahxephon is the definition of pretentious bullshit.
Gunbuster>Diebuster>Gurren Lagann>Eva.
BvS is bad for reasons completely unrelated to tropes too.
>Rahxephon > Eva
People need to stop being parrots.
>Eva 2.22 finally shows some positive character development for Shinji and the rest of the characters
>3.33 Throws that right out the window because Anno had another breakdown.
>Rahxephon > Eva
I unironically love RahXephon but this is just wrong.
>>Eva 2.22 finally shows some positive character development for Shinji and the rest of the characters
Not to dick ride demo, but you mean basic. Everyone had basic development. Shinji fucked up, manned up, and now he's getting the girl. That's basic hero, 101.
Om probably the kind of guy that eva was made to satirize, but i would much rather see a pilot with out many mental issues, can take the strain of piloting, and generally behaves like an adult.
i also dont like the organic look of everything
Pacific Rim is right up your alley.
>Utena > Eva
This is correct.
>i also dont like the organic look of everything
it's supposed to be unsettling, not charismatic
I'm not the only one who sees Dan Schneider's name on this page, right?
You arent my lord now
unfortunately it does, we had this similar argument years ago and mods sided with toonami fags, they won
Yes you are
>Evangelion’s dull, idiotic humor
He's right on this. Evangelion is my favorite anime, but even I get that it isn't funny at all, and I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to humor. Heck, I actually laughed while watching The Loud House last night.
btw you ain't so huge
>looks up trailer
oh god my 8 year old self trembles
No anime is actually funny
so you want dumb, run of the mill shit right?
>dumb
not necessarily, but i like both hard and soft sci fi
>run of the mill
if its done well
>shit
i prefer quality
Anime is either a complete hit or a complete miss when it comes to humour, at least to me.
Some shows are 200% fucking hilarious, while others are... eh. There are a few shows that have destroyed by sides with extreme prejudice and I don't even know why.
The only funny anime I've seen is Space Dandy.
That's a man, baby.
Tropes are tools
Tropes are not bad
Tropes are not good
Lurk more on TV tropes
>No lain mentioned
>no madoka mentioned
You're not even trying to bait
I think the ones that have gotten me are Zetsubou Sensei, Nichijou, Konosuba, Azumanga, Space Dandy, and... I'm sure there's one more.
I like lain but a lot of lainfags are extremely insufferable.
This is Sup Forums, OP.
Yeah but this is shinji we're talking about. The biggest pussy MC in anime. The scene where he saves Rei was so unexpected and awe-inspiring that in the cinema i saw it in, the audience actually cheered out loud. It was monumental not because it was hero 101, but it was Shinji manning up for once
Well atleast the lainfags aren't as bad as the Evafags
i believe thats an unrelated Dan Schnieder
Fooly cooly?
>The biggest pussy MC in anime.
Imagine you're his age, and you get plucked out of thin air to start piloting a giant mech and possibly die in the process.
Do you expect most people to start acting all hero-like about it?
Congratulations for being so uncultured only anime directly catering to cultural sphere you belong to makes you laugh
>No mention of Cromartie.
I know that the humor's not for everyone, but I found it hilarious myself.
i would try my best to be the ass-kicking hero i imagine myself to be
it would be the only thing keeping me going when i am beaten to a pulp
Doesn't change the fact that he's a pussy. His age/experience is irrelevant.
>Shinji is a pussy.
Worst meme in the history of anime.
>badass who looks like a whiny teenager
vs
>badass who looks manly and has a sweet beard
the choice is clear
Ah, here we go, they got me at times too.
FLCL probably less so because I was fucking transfixed by the visuals as a kid.
This This This.
The "shinji is a pussy" meme is only parroted by brain dead retards who can't fathom a character they can't self insert into.
I dunno. Anno was pretty clear about his intentions when he explained that he created Shinji out of his own vulnerability and depression. I always assumed that Shinji was meant to be an autistic pussy. What sort of badass would jack off over a comatose girl anyway?
I could have swore I clicked on Sup Forums and not Sup Forums.
if there was any choice other than shinji to pilot it, like a hardcore, grizzled war veteran, preferable with an eyepatch, they probably would have taken that
but their target demographic dont like hardcore people i guess
And you do? What a misogynistic pig
>TvTropes in particular is a full on cargo cult of fiction that worships recurring patterns in media but can't say anything about their meaning or use.
Also, if anything happened twice in the history of literature, it's a trope.
>but their target demographic dont like hardcore people i guess
>who is asuka
god damn is it ever
*ggglllk ssstop choking me I'm nnnot really Asuka*
"Who's Asuka"
Why do you people hate TV tropes so much? It's a nice place if ingested in moderate quantities
asuka only pretended to be strong and confident
she was also a loudmouth who talked a lot and bragged, with a deep seated need for attention
maybe someone with a more professional attitude
>asuka is not a badass
This meme is as bad as the "shinji is a pussy" meme
>It's a nice place
ohboyherewego
IN MODERATE QUANTITIES
Badasses don't suffer an emotional system crash. Badasses don't have emotions bringing them down to begin with.
He is enough of a writer to elaborate his statements, but too weak of a writers to do anything with that.
You get strongsauce shit like
>yet this is also where Evangelion falls into its major problems, as issues of script (the backbone of all film and animation, really — even when there’s no dialogue) and character (the ‘gel’ that holds most films together) come to the fore.
And then you look at whats after it, and there is fucking nothing. There is nothing there to back up this mediocre statement of strong words.
>The biggest pussy MC in anime
Most harem faggots are worse.
Even the more proactive ones is bigger pussies once they can't use their special power to manfight.
The few harem MC's that has some backbone, is either because they are psychopats of the higher order(Nasu's VN's, School Days, etc)
not disputing she isnt a badass
but she is something of a tryhard, she has an inflated ego, not a big one
her brags sound like someone who is expecting validation, rather than a simpel summation of her deed
You literally had your answer given to you in Work on your comprehension skills
More seriously as someone who writes, it's not even a useful resource, it's just hyperlinked autism as though every habit of a writer is some kind of fucking Pokemon that once discovered merits a name.
Where's my asukafag bros to back me up? Or is Sup Forums filled with baka reifags?
for some reason, "cool, commanding" characters are more prevalent in the real robot genre, or not in the pilot seat
Well I do enjoy unifying, recurring themes through anime, film, literature and comics. Not a lot of sites out there are so appealing to me. If you know of better sites then let me know.
Also, their fanfic recs are good
Jesus Christ, this guy sounds like couldn't make it into Honors English in school, so he writes the way he imagines they do.
>but their target demographic dont like hardcore people i guess
Are you an idiot?
Eva broke the conventions of its day. The average mecha protagonist of the time was either a hyper-competent wunderkid or a shouty, super-mega-man hyper badass more common in Super Robot stuff.
This is why it was a smash hit. Because it was different. Because it portrayed realistic people dealing with these unrealistic situations.
>Because it was different. Because it portrayed realistic people dealing with these unrealistic situations

I like Asuka, she's a great character and undoubtedly Best Girl.
But she is kinda a traumatized kid trying really hard to be a badass. Though, I would argue that most people we see as 'badasses' are, in reality, just that - people that build a shell of stoicism and anger around their vulnerabilities, and that the badasses of fiction simply don't exist.
So yeah, Asuka is a realistic 'badass', but the guy you're talking to basically wants the kind of badass you only get in fiction.
>Though, I would argue that most people we see as 'badasses' are, in reality, just that - people that build a shell of stoicism and anger around their vulnerabilities, and that the badasses of fiction simply don't exist.
Gendo and Kaji are both good examples of Eva doing this some more, by the way.
It's easier to see them as conventional badasses due to the fact that we see less of their struggles up-front, but they're both just as weak and broken as Asuka.
>Being an asukafag
>baddasses of fiction dont exist

and he wasnt putting on a show, he truly loved battle
ah nice, actual criticism outside of noting how annoying his style of writing is and leaving it at that
I'm pretty sure that, like the other British guy who used to stroll around amidst artillery fire and claim that "it's okay, I've got an umbrella", Jack was not quite right.
he was pretty eccentric in retirement, throwing his briefcase out the window becasue he didnt want to strain his back
but by all accounts he was silly, but well-adjusted man, with a love for remote control boats
Who /Kaworu/ here
Kys
>If you know of better sites then let me know.
Let me put it this way: Wikipedia mimics EB, Dictionary.com mimics MW, but there's never been a need to catalog what TVT indexes. It's not useful information with the possible minuscule exception of cliché checking.
The site wasn't founded on the concept "Let's strategically index the movements of literature in a structured fashion," it was "someone called a character a 'woobie' in Buffy, let's pollute an entire wiki with this kind of stuff."

Texhnolyze > Lain, anyway.
Rei is the best.
