the problem was that schedule conflicts meant they couldn't most of the main cast together. they wrote around it by splitting the story into character-centric episodes, but desu half of what made the series so good to begin with was the family interacting with and reacting to each other. that's lost for good chunks of s4
but still, yeah, despite its shortcomings s4 still has some of the best and most intrincate jokes in the whole series

Definitely. But I think they tried to create a new format around the scheduling issues, and while it didn't fail, it wasn't a massive success either.
I love season 4, but the problem is that it's a season that requires AT LEAST two binge watches to understand what's going on, and then more watches to get some of the more "complex" jokes.
It's like, the whole thing is simultaneously the setup and punch line.
