>Veidt. One question: Are you fucking retarded? It only takes a couple thousand, if not a million bucks to bribe politicians to start or end wars. These lobbyists are just run of the mill corporate executives, tycoons, and trust fund babies. You've invented teleportation. You can literally bribe every politician on the planet. I'm not going to kill you because you killed millions, but because you're so retarded that you need to be late term aborted.

The problem with bribing someone is it's a short term solution. The person always wants more more more. Having a BBEG for everyone to joint together and hate makes for a much more lasting solution.

>lol just pay them to stop hating each other

great idea user, im sure money can erase decades of distrust and rivalry

A couple thousand to start or end wars? What fucking reality are you from?

Is it? Is it really? Set up you own government or organization. Like a world wide church to last a couple hundred years.

I hate you. But pay me a grand and all is well.

Politicians are cheap.

A million bucks to have several countries subordinate to corporations. Which means countries can be pillaged or bombed if they don't adhere to the treaty.

What are the extent of Dr. Manhattan's powers exactly?

The comic builds him up as some omnipotent being, yet it also says he is incapable of stopping all of Russia's nukes. Why, exactly? How did they figure the limitation to his abilities?

>I hate you. But pay me a grand and all is well.

relations between countries are not that simple. are you really this naive?

the limitation is his puppet master's imagination

You do recall OP, that Veidt outright stated that teleportation was either fatal 100% of time, or anything teleported simply exploded if it materialized somewhere another thing already existed? That's kind of why the giant squid blew up when it did.

Veidt wouldn't be able to sell anything with that kind of limitation to any given government without giving them the power to just create cheap bombs that can be teleported anywhere.

At best, a world where every major government has access to an instant bomb button would lead to a cold war. At worst, one twitchy finger would blow everybody up.

the narrative convention that the Cold War is still a tangible problem in Watchmen even though God is on America's side

Yeah dude just buy out the fucking Cold War lmao

Compared to what profiteers will make from an arms race and even better a war Veidt's money is popcorn.

It could work.

The "great game" of politics has a lot of players, and they are often on the look out for other players. If Veidt tries to tip the scales with money, it's difficult if he's smart to tell, but it will eventually be found out and counter-forces will be exerted.

It also requires constant smart application of money. Politicians get ousted. There's also so many different political systems with so many nuances in the world its very difficult, if not impossible, to control all of them for any length of time.

The smart choice is to cut this knot in one stroke, you dum dum. The end of watchmen also motivates even the most selfish because it drives them to self preservation, which is dearer even than money.

I never got this. By all means, Dr. Manhattan should be able to vaporize all of Russia's nukes before they hit America. Yet the narrative acts like he could only stop, like 60% of them.

Remember that Manhattan is not actually omnipotent and omnipresent, and the detonation of a nuclear warhead would actually result in the exact thing that reduces his effective power by temporarily granting him the possibility of uncertainty.

The squid was a short term solution as well. Everything is a short term solution in the long run, in fact.

I don't know much about nukes. They release tachyons?

But even still, couldn't he just stop them with telekinesis? Couldn't he be in multiple places at the same time? Couldn't he just turn them into something else entirely?

No it's cool Veidt. We know your action figure and perfume sales are up. So just outbid the military industrial complex. Also make sure to gain influence in both the East and West to maintain stability. And then just maintain that fragile and explicitly expensive peace for the rest of your life and then some.

The same reason Manhattan didn't just tell him Veidt killed the comedian when he snuck into the base to find him. Jon has no horse in that race. He's so far gone into apathy that he would have no reason not to tell Rosarch the truth. He doesn't because he doesn't know. Just like he wouldn't know where and when to disable the entire arsenal of the Soviet union. He's not all powerful.

Tachyons aren't real user.
But yes, in the book nukes release tachyons which makes him unable to "see" properly since he sees the past, the present and the future simultaneously. .

Manhattan mentioned that one of the possible things that was blocking his ability to see the future over the course of the story was a nuclear holocaust so yes that would remove his omniscience for a little bit.

He could do pretty much anything, but doesn't really care

He could do anything but he won't because his future is already set in stone because everything is happening at the same time to him due to how he perceives time. He's a puppet that sees his strings.

>Not realizing Night Owl and Silk Spectre II were only important as the audience's insert into this comic.
>Night Owl is a middle aged man with a beer gut.
>Silk Specter is a rich trust fund baby playing costumed adventurer to alleviate boredom.
>Night Owl and Silk Specter II were entirely out of their element the entire comic.
>Veidt was a superhuman genius.
>What do?
>Have awkward sex in Veidt's Antarctica Base while everyone else was contributing to the story.
>Paying off politicians and Special interest organizations leaves a trail to follow.
>Unleashing giant Squid Dentata motivates people by instinctual fear.
>Instinct>>>>>>greed

Pffft.

Look at how long the American flags & unity lasted after 9/11.

We were united for a year, and then plunged into a terminal descent.
