I read the book when I was like 19 or 20 as part of a French class and it really fucked me up. It's an incredible depiction of the kind of longing and melancholy you feel when you think back on the magic of being a child and realize it's all gone.

It's not supposed to be sad, but the ending thing is really over the top and made me cry.
It is supposed to be sad at the end but it's no where near some of the sad movies that are out there.
I didn't actually find it sad at all, I mean, I'm not a very romantic person. I think what made me emotional was just how they sped it up to create an incredibly emotionally dense moment. Kind of like the ending of Toy Story 3 which is in no way sad, but a lot of people cried during it because it was just so overwhelming.
