Summer Camp Island

Of all the pilots created for Cartoon Network, THIS is the one they decided to greenlight? What were the executives thinking?

Probably that it would get them viewers.

Julia Potts is a really cool lady.

A lot of her charm from her Summer Camp Island concept art was lost through production, though, in my opinion. It feels very "loose", in a bad way. It's strange.

How do you guys feel about the style?

>Julia Pott

Oh shit, thought the style in the op image looked familiar. I liked her short films.
I haven't seen this pilot yet. Is Sup Forums split on it?

What about Twelve Forever or Infinity Train? Both were really great pilots. There are also others that are way better than this crap.

They showed Infinity Train on CN at 6AM on a Saturday, they clearly dont fucking care

>twelve forever
>good

just say you want more meme witch, user.

I respect your opinion, but it still had a much more positive reception than SCI.

It honestly doesn't look that ugly

I dislike Twelve Forever because it glorifies having fear of growing up. It's not something you should be encouraging in kids. I also find it a bit ironic that it's TWELVE Forever despite CN being aimed at ages 7-11.

I hope that's not the final artstyle. It looks like it can be kind of cute, I guess, but I'll reserve judgements until I know more

Seems like it could spawn some cute art

First impression is it's shit. Shit shit shit.

Another band of big eyed psuedo-children in a fantastical setting that's really a flimsy excuse for the creator to make up literally whatever they want.

No thanks.

The writing was so bland, I've already forgot what it was about.

It gets worse:
youtube.com/watch?v=M-X6SEDtQ1M

It feels like a fucking preschool show.

looks ok
both why is he wearing a skirt?

What the fuck, how are they supposed to be 14? The MC sounds 6

The hedgehog? thats a girl

>that art style

Is the art director a 10-year-old girl by any chance? Because that would explain a lot.

upskirt?

its a hedgehog?
i tought it was a sloth

the audience isn't suppose isn't supposed to sympathize with reggie you retard

forgot to backspace, i'm not having a stroke

Here's my plan for getting my own cartoon:
>Wait for Cartoon Network to fall so bad that they become desperate for ideas
>Nobody will want to pitch to them because they'll be failing so badly
>Except for me, who will use the network's failure and desperate to my advantage
>My show will become the next Adventure Time and save the network!

Good Fucking luck. Even in desperation they'll choose a noodle-armed bucket-head, over your (possibly) "quality" work.

They'll run themselves into the ground and you'll be all the better for being denied that... "opportunity".

I'm just gonna leave this here. I feel it should express my thoughts on the matter pretty well.

I don't get it...

Fuck you I like it
I want porn of the girl

Julia Potts' style is fucking atrocious and seeing a full cartoon made out of it offends my eyes.

Oh right, okay, in that case I agree. The image only showed the style and nothing else, so I didn't know if it was supposed to symbolise a positive or negative opinion on it.

Is anyone who can make quality gone and no one else wants to sign up with them? Because, like another user said, this cartoon feels like it's more for pre-schoolers. Like it would fit more on Nick Jr.

It's near impossible to pitch a show for Cartoon Network unless you either already work there, or have connections with someone who does. There are probably hundreds of talented creators being shut out because they don't have connections with the industry.

why does the art style look like those drawings with the crystal treatments?

That's the thing. Julia Potts is one of those artists who has a charming style, but when applied to animation, it sucks so much out of it to fit a production's pipeline, it ends up just looking like it was made by the same person who did Jeff and Some Aliens rather than an actual artist. It happens so often and it's been getting worse and worse to the point where Rebecca Sugar just changes her own unique art style entirely so other people can mimic her even though the SU pilot looked like her art just gained life.

I know cartoons being more and more unprofitable over time means production costs will have to trim down, but it's a damn shame it does. When artists like Tim Burton Joe Murray, David Feiss, Chris Sanders, and Jhonen Vasquez got their own shows/movies, it ended up looking like their sketchbooks leaped off the page and started moving. Fuck, even Chris Savino's work had to be dumbed down for Harmony puppet animation.

Or Victor and Valentino

Rumored to be greenlit but not announced. I asked some CN employee buddies but none of them seem to know much but they say that there are several teams actively working on productions that haven't yet aired.

sorry dude but there's definitely an appeal to the style.

God, I mean, there's definitely some good things about her style, it's very storybookish, but I can't see it as a cartoon on CN. It's like it fits more in with the bumpers you see on nick jr

This is the first time in a while I can't watch something due to artstyle. If it turns out to be good I'll listen to audio

Video above, it's written preschool tier but apparently trying to be like Gravity Falls in a very loose way.

The acting is mind numbing, it's very childish, and I can only see this as direct confirmation CN is transitioning to an era for babies and pre teens, with maybe 2 shows with any sort of mature acts, and those would be around the end of the day to move the viewership to AS.

Regular Show was recently revealed to be hated by the new president because she felt it was too far from family friendly, even though she tried her hardest to keep the later episodes from doing anything risky (innuendos were almost entirely dropped, violence was made more anti-climactic, etc)

Adventure Time is in a mid-kill phase, it's not the baby stuff CN is aiming for now, but it does have talking candy and it has a vocal fanbase (mostly shippers but it's still something) so they're treating it like shit but not as hard.

SU is the same as AT, but with more fans and it's treated better.

It was revealed earlier this year the reason TTG is played so much is because they don't have enough baby level stuff in their inventory yet to fill a schedule with their new era of demographics.

Gumball is played because its kind of childish, or at least closer than the other shows, just not as much as TTG.

PPG was going to be their 2nd schedule filler but apparently hiring internet teen girls to make the show turned out to be a problem somehow and theres shit going on behind the scenes.

It's bad man

Why not just show Wabbit, Bunnicula, The Tom and Jerry Show, The Garfield Show, etc?

Is there a source for all this stuff you said?

I don't think anyone realizes how damn hard it is to be a show runner let alone work on a short.

Of course they're not going to take any person that has a good idea. I've had friends from outside of the company pitch, but because they've already had a degree of experience and can deal with the pressure and the deadlines that come with working in animation. So of course they're going to look for people within the industry. It would be stupid if they took a show idea from someone that doesn't have a lock of knowledge about production or art in general.

>above

I also want a source, some pretty bold statements there. (Though I'd like to have my suspicions supported by this)

When they rebranded Boomerang to stop being an all nostalgia channel they decided to make it Cartoon Network 2, with exclusive content. New PPG went over there and only has special moments on CN, like premieres. I think it reruns only on Boomerang for a short time.

The rest are exclusives to Boomerang so it can be it's own channel but in the same line as CN, which is why they changed their logo.

Rendering the network name pointless and the slogan wiped.

God damn I'm stupid, I should've went back to see before posting if I could find the link again. I got some counterflix virus and had to do extensive scans and my history was wiped. If I knew before hand I wouldn't have posted so I didn't look like a cunt.

There's a few different sources for the different things, a RS crew member said the show was being pushed away from the forefront because it didn't fit what they had in mind, they didn't specifically say it was because it wasn't baby-tier but it kind of goes without saying at this point, especially since they mentioned it in-show the Halloween specials have been weak as fuck.

There was a press release in early February where either a spokesperson or the president herself was talking about the switchover, and that they were reinventing what the channel's demographic was.

tl;dr excuses i have no source could be full of shit but it's not something that's so big of a deal that there shouldn't be an argument over it, it's common knowledge CN is stooping low right now and have been changing their perspective. The only source worthy thing would be the RS interview claim, and it was either an interview or the Reddit AMA that was recent, I only remember the look of the page I read it on and I'm thinking it was reddit but interview sites have the same visual layout. Just the same it could've been a Tumblr account though with a white design. Site for the CN press release might've been Turner Press.

I'm a fucking fag, sorry.

Post got too long, also wanted to say I'm going to look for it and if the threads dead when/if I find it I'll make a thread.

Why the fuck is the elephant named "Oscar", yet the hedgehog is simply named "Hedgehog"?

Because the art is so horrible they have to explicitly state what animal it is.

Maybe they'll give it a nickname if the show isn't one-note and straightforward enough, like Hedgy

The artstyle makes me feel like this is aimed at toddlers and not general audiences ir at least kid-teenagers

OK K.O.! or BTFO

>CN
>showing non-CN originals
also 3/4 of those shows is mediocre af

Why does every character look like pic related

>muh mina waifu

I'm not the person who posted that, nor do I believe it without question, but Christina Miller DOES seem to be taking the network in more of a "childhood growth" direction.

Not only do they have the whole "teach kids to code" initiative, but I've even heard they're integrating it into schools. Cartoon Network has never been about growing up and entering the workplace, and they used to appeal directly to child psychology without filtering it through the education system.

Without an stable soruce I'll take it with a grain of salt but I can see this being a plausible reason.

I'm quite surprised tho. With AT and SU blowing up, then We Bare Bears I always assumed CN was heading for a programming appealing more to the pre-teen teen millenials. But I guess if they are really gonna focus in a more younger demographic I don't see the likes of Gumball surviving very long; Despite looking childish, it probably has some of the more risque and darker type of jokes in the network ever since RS ended. If the "baby-level"stuff, as you call it, is what they want to target I imagine sooner or later they are gonna caught on the fact Gumball doesn't fit in that criteria.

I do wanna know what exactly do you mean by "baby-level" in more detail since I can't really think where exactly would that fall. Do you mean actual preschool programming? Because I wouldn't call TTG preschool and that's their biggest seller.

I don't say this as an attack on your post, I'm legitimately curious cause if we are really going for super soft and family friend I imagine even the likes of SU, despite its cutesy exterior, won't last in that enviroment.

I'm a latinofag, and the way you make it sound remidns me of our current channel Discovery Kids (Dunno if it existed over the state) which started as an all-ages kids channel (having sections of the day dedicated for preschoolers, then preteens, then teens at night) until it was reworked to focus only on preschool programming with the rare and occasional straggler rerun of a show from the deceased HUB channel.

>another quirky show with animal characters

S t o p

getting rid of him was a mistake

it looks like the beginning of a gay furry comic

>I'll take it with a grain of salt
After realizing I have no citations that's the most I can ask for. Just something to keep in mind if it matters.

By baby level stuff I mean things that have few innuendos, aren't mature (that word gets thrown around a lot, I just mean things that are there to be "dumb" and crazy types, random or whatever) and the plots are usually straightforward kid stuff, or if it is something different it still doesn't deviate from the path as much with additional dialogue. It's just there to be fun and a distraction rather than feeling anything of investment.

TTG is what fits the criteria I'm referring to the most, at least on CN. Tom and Jerry Show, Garfield, and the new PPG are hugely childish.

Gotta say I did a shit job of explaining "baby-level"

Also DK was in the US, I watched it when I was younger, until it disappeared

No joke, it looks like some furry's cub art porn. Those that are DA-tier.

I knew I recognised that style.

vimeo.com/46233381

Same, I hope her show is surreal as what I linked

So nothing really substancial story-wise, more episodic and random and heavily reduction of action and violence.

Yeah, if that's the way they are going both SU and Gumball won't have long. AT already is confirmed to be ending so i don't count it.Gumball mostly from the level of slapstick and the humor it utilizes and SU due to them catching on the lingering plots given the way you make it sound, executives want to return to the "no serialisation" phase they had at some point during the 2010s

SU probably will survive a bit longer just out of loud fanbase and due to their soft colors fooling executives at first glance. But it will take one high-er up actually reviewing the show to exclaim these themes and stories are "too much" for children despite being barely any deep.

Or maybe I'm just a pessimist. Seems Disney was the only one who picked up Millenial pre-teens and teens can give you some revenue with Gravity Falls, Star vs TFOE having been successes and probably they hope to bank on the same success with Ducktales given it was renewed for a second season despite not being out yet.

Now this is an actual, quintessential representation of the "Tumblr aesthetic" people seem to complain a lot about here.

Julia Pott's style is pretty cute, but with the way CN animates things (essentially removing some of the charm of her storybook-esque style) it looks off. Combine the fact that SCI has this very quirky setting that makes no effort in getting some DEEPEST LORE going on, the soft, pastel colors in many scenes and childish, soft-spoken characters, and you've got something that just - embodies that Tumblr thing.

>uncle grandpa

If CN put more of her art style and coloring into this and not just give it a shit average budget, it would probably look way better

I can assure you right now that if things don't get better SCI will recieve a Steven Universe treatment. Prepare for the models looking progressively more and more off-model as the animators stop giving a shit.

SU is purposely drawn off model, not out of laziness. anime does the same shit and nobody gives a fuck about that.

I see that excuse get thrown around a lot but no, it is definetly out of laziness.

Even if it's referencing anime, Steven Universe is an American cartoon, and the way we work in this hemisphere is not the same as the Japanese work. There is no over-detailed characters in SU that demand work to be switched over to animation instead of design.

Steven Universe hasn't got that many reference sheets for characters and the like (they lack set height charts), and this is a big mistake because it leads to the height and general shape of the characters to be drawn badly.

It makes no sense that in the start of the show, where Steven is 12 and incredibly immature, he looks like an actual 12 year old. Now that he is 14 and matured considerably, he literally looks like a toddler.

I liked it a lot. Looks like something nice to chill to, while when the humor does emerge it hits hard enough.

It's not an excuse Ian and Rebecca have literally said this on multiple occasions. Maybe it wasn't said publicly or something, but it's a fact.

That's not to say their execution of the idea is done well, but the intention is there and it's retarded to argue that it's lazy when it's a purposeful choice for the studio to pull frames directly from the boards and discrediting the fact that storyboarding these days is like 5 different jobs at once compared to several years ago.

I'm not saying it's a reference to anime. I'm comparing the similarities between characters being off model and the fact that people are going wild about it over here but not the other way around.

did memefinity train die for this

Not gonna be surprised if the author has that in her secret sketchbook

>Adventure Time
>not some early to mid 00's glorious violent fightfest.

C'mon son, step it up.

Look at this new camp Slinkman, bunch of degenerates.

>wondering why user posted some shitty 14yo's deviantart CN thing
>read replies
>oh no
>see her signature
absolutely horrific

This style makes me pretty uncomfortable

>Teen bop.
>boy band poster.
>glitter clue.
Hedgehog is the token gay kid at camp, isn't he?

>mfw people will compare this to Lazlo just because they're both set at summer camps

Camp bicycle

>obvious female voice
>skirt
>blatantly stated earlier in the thread
how thick are you

What can I say, I love Camp Lazlo.

I do too (Lazlo doesn't deserve to be compared to this)

>Deviant art Sonic OC in "muh style" reminiscent of a 7 year old's scribbles?

Pass.

Oh merp; what I was I thinking?

You seem to be new here, so let me give you a crash course - modern CN is shit

>girl hedgehog
CUTE!

Never before has it felt so appropriate to say this, but this art style is clearly for gay babies.

Oh gosh isn't this so sweet, for us to be a bunch of playing little innocent boys, we always get along but sometimes we get a little bit nervous and we make our eyebrows like this but then we make sure to talk it out and we never fight

Also check out the two dimensions on the framed picture of a snowball fight they have where a window should be

If you're talking about how anime will comically deviate from its highly controlled character models for emotion and humor, then I'm not sure if Steven Universe's fluctuation in size and dimension to fit the frame counts.

PORN WHEN?

The window is the worst part. Her aesthetic seems to be unrefined and self-aware, but that doesn't excuse fucking up dimension that bad.

I think it looks cute.
Not everything needs to be fucking Steven Universe Cal-Arts shit. God forbid someone have a different unique artstyle for a cartoon.

>Not everything needs to be fucking Steven Universe Cal-Arts shit
Yes, that's the point. You're an idiot if you believe this isn't more of that low effort bullshit.

You saying a potatoe is different from a potato.

It's the same shit.

Adventure Time was greenlit at a time of desperation and saved the network from complete decay. Similar to the prediction, people were mostly pitching crap like The Annoying Orange and The Problem Solverz, until they got AT which saved them. At the rate CN is going, it will happen again in the future.

Look at the bright side, there's no way Camp Lazlo will look bad in comparison.

Hopefully they change the style in the final product. Her style fits better with children's books/illustration, as lackluster as it is.
Voices and story seemed okay to me though.

Doesn't change the fact using AT as a example is incredibly unambitious.

Seriously, you think that mediocre drivel is something to aspire to?

anyone find his jaw yet?

So synder was the hero we needed, but not the one we wanted
