>When the concept for Paul Feig’s remake of Ghostbusters was first announced, it received a healthy amount of advanced praise for the gender-swapping of its lead ensemble. But it also received a massive amount of blowback from fans of the 1984 original who couldn’t imagine Winston Zeddemore and doctors Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler being replaced by a bunch of women. Unfortunately, enough of those “fans” waged a massive trolling campaign online to cast an unshakable pall over the film that hung around after it was released in 2016. Now, one year removed from the film’s release, Feig spoke at Vulture Festival L.A. about how his Ghostbusters unintentionally turned into a “cause” he never intended to create, and how that cause may have ultimately hindered the movie’s success.
>“I think it kind of hampered us a little bit because the movie became so much of a cause. I think for some of our audience, they were like, ‘What the fuck? We don’t wanna go to a cause. We just wanna watch a fuckin’ movie,’” the director says. And he still has mixed emotions about how it all panned out.
>“It was a great regret in my life that the movie didn’t do better, ’cause I really loved it,” Feig explained. “It’s not a perfect movie. None of my movies are perfect. I liked what we were doing with it. It was only supposed to be there to entertain people.”
Why did you turn the ghostbusters movie into a political move Sup Forums?
Paul Feig certainly NEVER meant it to be anything more than a loving tribute to the 80s movie
As an apology he should write and direct a female Back to the Future remake.
Christopher Hernandez
>Regrets his propaganda movie was shit on and universally mocked ftfh
Wyatt Cruz
It was a shit movie either way. I don't give two fucks if in the next one they replace all of the actors with giant dildos.
It had bad acting, weak plot, cringe dialogue.
Connor Collins
The only decent thing was Wiig being Wiig.
It was a bad concept that rightfully got shitted on as while folks will watch sequels sometimes, they are already getting tired of reboots of stuff.
Lucas Stewart
>created by men >made by men >re-made by women who couldn't come up with their own OC >GIRL POWER!
Caleb Walker
>Unfortunately, enough of those “fans” waged a massive trolling campaign online to cast an unshakable pall over the film that hung around after it was released in 2016.
Yeah sure blame the fans of the original instead of the female cast and feminists who thought that if they bullied everyone who didn't want to see it as an oppressive CIS male shitlord, then they could force people into watching it.
Jonathan Baker
>movie that was only made to antagonize men turned into a cause >studio marketed it as such >surprised it was received the way it was
Oliver James
I'll accept his apology when he kills himself.
Gavin Murphy
Why cant they realize no one wanted to see it?
Not even the feminists who held it up saw this crap
Joshua Foster
What a bunch of crap... he only regrets turning it into a "cause" because it failed, meaning he hurt his "cause" thats what he regrets, had the movie been a success, he would not be talking about regret about turning it into a cause, he would be bragging about it
Ian Carter
Yeah, he regrets it NOW after it flopped and he ended up in movie jail. He didn't regret it when his folk thought it was a sure win as a referendum for feminism in society.
Jayden Stewart
edris elba should have played all parts. ALL PARTS
Nathaniel White
Daily reminder that Paul Feig is done according to Dan
Apologies for shit video but its the only one I could find with the source
Thomas Jenkins
I just want Feig to lose his career and influence, I don't give a shit about whatever gimmick they try to get people to see some bullshit movie every few months
Aaron Cruz
>As an apology he should write and direct a female Back to the Future remake. M2F tranny Back to the Future you mean
Zachary Bell
You’re a man, Marty, we need to go back, back to the night you cut off your penis.
Camden Parker
>It’s not a perfect movie That's an understatement. I finally watched it and it was garbage. That script wouldn't work even if the cast were all dudes. I'm sure he had fun working on the film and that's nice and all but that doesn't change the fact the film is still bad and was just fated to do poorly whether or not it became a "cause". Surprisingly the only person to make me laugh was Leslie. Really wasn't expecting that. It actually felt like she gave a fuck and became the best character.
Nathaniel Kelly
they will never learn
William Evans
just a reminder that the ghostbusters was never good.
Hunter Roberts
I read that as Black to the Future
William Adams
>"think it kind of hampered us a little bit because the movie became so much of a cause. I think for some of our audience, they were like, ‘What the fuck? We don’t wanna go to a cause"
Mr.Feig, what could possibly give us the impression you were pandering to feminist enthusiasts while shitting on a beloved ip?
Carson Morales
I would have watched this.
Isaiah Nguyen
>can't park the DeLorean >end up in the jurassic age neat
Charles Bennett
>I regret that the movie wasn't sucessful your not fooling anyone you sissy
Jose Miller
ghostbusters was never better than okay
Angel Davis
If thats the case regarding leslie you might be autistic.
Charles Garcia
>AVGN >says if you want shitty movies to stop getting made, stop going to see them >refuses to see Nu Busters because its just a shameless reboot of a beloved franchise >feminists and social media attempt to eat him alive >only makes his AVGN fanbase explode, exposing him to people that never even heard of him who now love him
William Sanchez
TBF there is literally none of that movie is the actors fault. It's Feig's shitty directing skills, a shit script, and the incompetence of the studio desperate for cashing in on its franchises
Aiden Jackson
Yeah!!! KILL THAT WHITE CHRISTIAN MALE!!!!
Isaac Rivera
She is hands down the best character in the film. That doesn't mean I thought she was great just better than everyone else in this case. Otherwise I can't stand her.
Oliver Rivera
yeah me too actually
Joseph Bennett
user is right, Leslie jones is probably the only character utilized even passably well in that movie, because her character is a kind of dumb, fish out of water black lady from NY, so all her reactions seem realistic.
Jason Jones
Good on him to admit it was a propaganda piece. I know he can't say he hated the movie because of the fact it is one, but deep down you can tell he was itching to say it was awful here.
Oliver Roberts
T H I S
Kayden Cox
Everything has been for a cause for the last 5 years and especially since trump won. All forms of media have come out and virtue signalled against some wild nazi fantasy they see. Comics,tv,video games, books, news, radio, the internet. Everything has been taken over by these fucks and used as a tool to beat people over the head about how they are immoral racist bigots.
Asher Taylor
Feig had no fucking clue why the original Ghostbusters worked and thought he could just let the actors adlib their way thru the entire movie. When that didn't work he and Sony turned it into a "cause" in a pathetic attempt to save it by accusing everyone of being sexist. He has no one to blame but his fucking self.
Jonathan Phillips
>cast filled with "well known" comedians >they aren't funny in this movie are they part of anything else they were remotely funny in?
Thomas Cooper
If I recall correctly it was the stars of the film who fought with internet trolls and turned it into a cause. If he just wanted it to be a film he should have addressed that with the actresses.
Luis Perry
Even sports they're trying to take over too It's really ridiculous and why people keep turning away from all those forms of entertainment.
Nolan Perez
>Paul Feig certainly NEVER meant it to be anything more than a loving tribute to the 80s movie
But, thats not true, he specifically held interviews talking about making it a fucking cause and even wrote in segments in the movie directly stating "fuck men"
Paul directed a movie like you would a sitcom.
Aiden Ramirez
Bullshit. He's just upset his cause got rejected, not that it became one. Everyone involved in that shit knew damn well the message it was trying to send. His miscalculation was using an all male source material and trying to change as his feminist message rather than using a female source material as the vehicle for his feminist message. Same shit that's going on in nu-wars only they were a little more careful in their execution and the amount of money they spent in capturing every outlet that jeopardized the narrative of the film. In spite of that, you can still see they're sweating a little more than they should. Having to invent stupid shit like Porgs to compensate for low toy sales on characters no one really gives a shit about. For even daring to claim otherwise, someone should dangle this guy out of the window by his ankles like Vanilla Ice.
Jacob Jenkins
Don't forget he had a meltdown on Twitter too, twice
Owen Barnes
Leslie Jones's twitter meltdown was one the hardest I've ever laughed
Landon Perry
www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTqX9o0rhLw He turns everything into an excuse to belittle men. He absolutely intended for it to be a "cause"
Nathaniel Ramirez
"I pandered to a minority and ruined a male franchise, and didnt make any money like I thought"
That's all this fucking means. Fuck him.
Hudson Hall
Had he written a good story that people actually liked it could have been used for whatever cuase he wanted. Somehow they still don't get it.
Everyone dumped on your movie because it was a shitty movie. Not because "women".
Jeremiah Ortiz
His whole cast did but, what, the one who played the Lesbian? She HATED being there, even in the out takes or making of you see some stuff of her looking really pissed as her fellow "actresses" flub lines and make up their own then get caught up in how FUNNY THEY ARE AHAHAHAAHAH, meanwhile shes looking pissed cause the take was good.
Sony really knows how to make stupid controversy to wreck a career, the fat one was fast tracked to be the big thing and her prices already tripled, but this movie tanked her. I dont see her anymore at all.
Andrew Peterson
Alt left cucks keep crying every day while Trump is president, reminder.
I was amazed by these morons, it looks like they never interacted with trolls on Internet. Getting all worked up after receiving mean comments. These Hollywood folks are sheltered and completely disconnected from normal interactions with ppl. They live in a small bubble where they all thought that GB sheboot was a winner.
Juan Morales
WHAT TILL YOU SEE THE
OOOOH OH NONONONONONONONO
Asher Bailey
He definitely has a problem with masculinity and is an obvious fag, why is he in the closet still?
Adam Roberts
AAAAAAHAHAHAHA
Levi Murphy
But he didnt admit that
He said it was hijacked which is a lie because he entertained it
Michael Parker
She thought shitty photoshopped tweets were someone hacked her account. She's worse than my grandparents on the internet.
Tyler Sanders
It can work.
Jonathan Ross
>do everything you can to make your movie into a cause >that ends up backfiring on you heavily >regret it Ya dont say?
Jackson Barnes
Normies that flooded online in the past few years can't take trolling period. Think back ten years ago when everyone online called each other faggots and were flinging insults non-stop. It was a right of passage to using the Internet, but now, since everything is so locked down, people freak out when they see a single insult on Twitter.
Colton Gomez
>WAAAAAAHHHHH I NEVER MEANT IT TO BE A CAAAUUUUUSE.
Nolan Jenkins
...
Wyatt Barnes
>Worst film since Battlefield Earth
Go figure.
Camden Taylor
I'd watch that. Only Marty is a middle aged man played by Craig Robinson and the Doc is Samuel L. Jackson. Has to go back in time to the 70s in order to to win a football game or something.
Colton Phillips
Wait so this wasn't just an unfunny South Park meme?
Aiden Davis
making it all dyke was pretty smart. men would be compared to the original cast. the problem is that its an unfunny mess of a movie
Noah Stewart
hehehehe
i fucking love it man, its like a self parody of america
Luke Flores
No, those are actual quotes by (((journalists.)))
Christopher Hernandez
>"I never wanted it to become a cause"
Jace James
he's backpedaling so much
Logan Scott
It's his fault and he totally went for it too so I don't buy it. He just wants out of director jail
Colton Bailey
it's RITE of passage. As in a ritual, an initiation.
Ryder Jenkins
Nah it was mostly just a fucking shit movie m8
Jack Jenkins
That's on me. Thanks user.
Jack Jenkins
>CORPORATE FEMINISM!
Easton Ortiz
And this is why its so idiotic to hold the multi-billion dollar companies like sony and Disney as being beacons of progressive thought in need to defending with your patronage. They will literally say anything as long as saying it makes them money.
Tyler Perez
>his Ghostbusters unintentionally turned into a “cause” he never intended to create
ha ha no fuck you paul for real
Ryan Wood
>remake a classic movie adored by millions >recast it with all women >attack anyone that doesn't approve of your decision >accuse anyone that doesn't want to see it of being a misogynist
Yea, fuck that guy, and his shitty grrl power movie.
Xavier Taylor
...
Jordan Diaz
Who the fuck thought going to a hospital with dying kids WHO WON'T EVEN SEE THE FUCKING MOVIE was a good idea?
Parker Phillips
I'm not racist by any means, but Leslie Jones is seriously, seriously ugly. Like REALLY fucking ugly. I'll never understand her popularity since she's also not funny or talented.
Cameron Sanders
I'd bust the ceiling of her cervix, if you know what I mean.
Gabriel Johnson
I think it was accidentally darkly hilarious. Them dressed in thier ghostbuster gear next to the nearly dead is pretty funny. Could have been a good scene in the movie.
Camden Morales
What, you think sending characters that trap/kill ghosts for a living to visit dying kids is in bad taste?
Logan Thompson
The same people that thought Ghostbusters 2016 was a good idea
Caleb Miller
it was so great the huge fumbles they constantly and consistently made in promoting that film. The trailers, the holy shit SO intentional framing of seeing the movie as a protest against muh soggy knees, the retarded appearances.
It's like they were TRYING to kill the movie lol
Thomas Wright
> tfw you're just trying to hold onto life for a few more minutes so your soul will ascend to Heaven instead of being trapped in Purgatory by the spawncamping Ghostbusters.
Charles Bell
Three sentences in and they're already lying about how this all went down
Camden Wright
Hold the fuck up it was amy/feig/etc that turned the movie into a 'women rule/funny/etc.. get over it u crybaby males' cause everything else was reactionary to that
fuck sony/feig/amy and anyone that pushed this 'cause' of a movie onto the public
Michael Sanchez
>tries to parallel park the Delorean >end up in another dimension
Camden Hill
>I think it kind of hampered us a little bit because the movie became so much of a cause. I think for some of our audience, they were like, ‘What the fuck? We don’t wanna go to a cause. We just wanna watch a fuckin’ movie,’” It really is amazing how these movie people don't just naturally assume these things are the default and only come to the conclusion months after the fact
Samuel Smith
The most amazing part was getting sjw feminazis to defend a huge corporation cashing in on a movie that's shilling PAPA john's pizza.
Jace Edwards
>his Ghostbusters unintentionally turned into a “cause” he never intended to create HUE He literally created this shitstorm. People criticizing the movie were called anti-women when it was just a shit movie.
David Howard
wonder how many of them are jobless or doing less than stellar productions on a current series or direct to dvd movie(s). at the time they probably thought they would change the system and would write their own ticket. more money, less hours, higher prestige, maybe even recognized at awards ceremonies. but now...
Liam Adams
Based James!
Henry Nelson
Paul Feig regrets his movie was a piece of trash with terrible CGI
Blake Adams
The movie was made entirely by men, even if they claim otherwise. That said, all the actors were fucking terrible save for maybe Jones.
Blake Rodriguez
I'm not sure if Wiig did. At least I don't think she had a twitter to melt down on and can only remember the McCarthy bitching in interviews about it. I like Wiig but she should've known to stay the fuck away from this.
As for Feig. Yeah he's only regretting that it failed and fucked his career. He's acting like he was just making this movie and the "cause" around it got out of hand when fucking he and Amy Pascal were directly to blame for it. If Spy 2 underperforms then he's totally fucked.
Henry Anderson
Two most melodramatic sites on the internet (Sup Forums and tumblr) latched onto the movie for opposite reasons Cue political overdramatising and making a big fucking deal out of nothing
Hunter Nguyen
I honestly though he was out. He's the kind of self hating man who gets a sex change
