But can the same be said for the writing?

Not really. It's a far reach from the classics, but it's definitely better than the middle seasons.

Hillenburg is back on the show, so maybe.
The second movie was way better then anything in the last few seasons.

I don't like Patrick's constant weird jaw shit he has going on, that just reminds me of Asshole Patrick.

reminds me a lot of both movies animation. I love it

It's better than the one tooth thing he had going on after the first movie

Right, he also had that when he became an asshole, I forgot.

Second movie was pretty shit imo. Maybe I'm comparing it too much to the first.

I think it's fine. It lends a lot to creative expressions.

it was no masterpiece but it was just mindless fun, it had some funny jokes and stuff. i wish they focused more on the plot instead of making it so disconnected. Also it's good to see 2D animation being big on cinemas again

I hate they went CGI surfaced

For people who loved the early seasons, please watch this episode. You won't be disappointed.

yeah, thank god it was just the ending of the movie though.

My favorite part:
>Spongebob: *carrying Karen's monitor* "I've never carried a head before."
>Plankton: "Eh, you get used to it."
>Spongebob: "It's still warm..."

Why is every character off model?

As long as it looks good, why not?

>Aren't you overreacting a bit?

>the only cartoon left with the looks and budget of a 90's cartoon.
>only now using this power to it's full potential

Why not being off-model? turning into storyboard-driven was the best thing they ever did to post-movie spongebob.

It just seemed so random at times. The plot changed like three different times throughout the movie. And the whole CGI superhero part was just unnecessary. I'll admit the Hasselhoff scene in one was pretty left field but at least it made some kind of sense and wasn't just "I'm gonna make you a magic superhero for a bit because reasons."

Blame/Thank Bob Jaques for that. IIRC he was an animation director for Ren and Stimpy

yeah, looking at the trailer i thought that the pirate was trying to write his own version of the Bikini Bottom like a god or something, but he's actually just wanting to do hamburguers, it felt like nothing was at stake.

Bob Jacques wasn't involved in the episode in the OP.

The person you should actually be thanking/blaming is Fred Osmond, the guy who storyboarded this episode.

it really does feel like ren and stimpy, bless that man

OW

yeah that part made me laugh

I don't know when the last spongebob episode I watched was.

Ages ago. Maybe 5 years or so.

Pretty sure that Vincent Waller must be really pushing the cartooniness, he brought back some R&S storyboarders too for 9B at least (Bob Camp and Lynne Naylor).
I'm really sure he must be trying to bring back together old school Spumco considering John K will also do a short for the next film.

Not awful

I haven't seen a spongebob episode in years, maybe just a couple post movie.

I will tell you what I think afterwards.

>wolverine.png

it's a script driven show now
also Hillenberg may be present, but he's not the showrunner (Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli are)

What did he mean by this?

>most of the post movie boarders (Casey Alexander, Marc Ceccarelli, Luke Brooshire briefly, eventually Zeus Cervas) went on to board for uncle grandpa
>Fred Osmond spent some time on Uncle Grandpa before leaving to work on post-2nd movie spongebob
>there's also an episode (Food Con Castaways) boarded by uncle grandpa board team Ryan Kramer and Chris Allison

...

Yeh, it's not perfect, certainly not pre-movie quality but you can definitely feel the effort of the new writers and how they really it to be good.

I've noticed when I gave the show another chance recently. Probably the best animation in TV cartoons currently. Too lazy to check previous seasons if they did it behind my back.

The show really needed the new blood. It was feeling very tired by season 8. Plus the drawings in the newest ones are a lot more expressive like OP said.

>Probably the best animation in TV cartoons currently.
I agree desu
>Too lazy to check previous seasons if they did it behind my back.
No need to, it really started midway through season 9 to an extent. It's best is in season 10.

It was ok.
Mimic Madness moreso than house worming.

Good to know, user

>current year
>Spongebob
Just let it go, Sup Forums. The corpse has been cold for years.

On the contrary, this corpse might still have some life in it

house worming was written by a post-movie outline writer (Richard Pursel, who had also worked on ren and stimpy)

I liked ren and stimpy personally as a boy.

I was.

...

They've hit the point (+10 years) where kids that grew up watching the show are now writing for it.

Same effect as when the Simpsons suddenly started being good for a bit again.

Sweet merciful jesus...

not really: Jack Pendarvis was a friend of season 3 writer Kent Osborne (and worked alongside kent on adventure time), Kyle McCulloch was a writer for south park (and had been involved in the early season 4 episode skill crane), Kaz was a boarder on season 3, and Mr. Lawrence was on the show back in the beginning
you might have a point with some of the less regular writers

trigger warning pls

Did they make Spongebob even more yellow?
It's hurting my eyes.

Hillenburg should create a new show.

Fun fact, Karen is also the name of Stephen Hillenburg's wife.

yes and no
there's a little more clever writing in the newer episodes than in past seasons
but it has a few episodes that are just horrifying to watch
like Whirly Brains and Snooze You Lose

Fun Fact: while post-2nd movie spongebob is script driven, the upcoming episode Don't Wake Patrick is gonna be board driven (outline by Mr Lawrence, written/boarded by Brian Morante, who boarded Salsa Imbecilicus, Unreal Estate, Mimic Madness, and Life Insurance)

>Spongebob has some the best animation on television right now

Weird, usually longtime successful shows like this cut corners. Nice to know the show's getting better overall.

Immortality has it's perks it would seem like

Just finished watching that one.

Imagine if he were to jack you off.

Even with more quality animation it looks too stiff. I hate to be one of those people but spongebob's style works much better with traditional animation, the show will just never feel the same for me as long as it's computer animated.

It's kinda surreal watching Spongebob after so long of ignoring it.

That's what happens when you change to digital. Shooting on cels dulls the colours a little, which I prefer over screaming digital primaries.

You can feel that the people working on it are really trying but it's still nothing remarkable. Being better than the truly awful mid seasons is still damning with faint praise.

The honeymoon period is long over and I don't think I'll ever find Spongebob as funny as I used to. Everything's better when you discover it and this has been around for 10 years! It's not a fault of the show or the people making it, it's just that they've been making this show for a decade and there's no way to make it fresh again, other than just trying completely weird new things for the sake of doing something different but it really just feels like a show that's premise and characters have been stretched dangerously thin.

It's not bad, I've seen far worse

Tom Kenny does a scarily good impression of Patrick and Plankton

There's really nothing the show can do about that since cel animation is long dead.

Yeah, how about calling it Spingebill?
