No Aki porn

Normies. Too many of em.

>What went wrong?
Calling it Final Fantasy.

Bruh

>Incredible CGI that was nothing short of miraculous at the time of release

100% true but miraculous at the time was still complete uncanny valley shit

Casuals/families didn't like It cause it was not a Shrek funny cartoon flick.
FF fans didn't like it cause no Cloud.
Sci-fi is doomed to bomb if you don't go full space opera.

FF fans didn't care for it.
Non FF didn't care for it either.

It's boring, the voice acting was poorly directed, the story didn't hold the viewer's interest.

Remember when women were alllowed to be skinny

unirronically this

What kind of retard is an FF fan and expects the same characters and settings as other entries of the franchise.

>What kind of retard is an FF fan
theyre pretty big retards actually

>A solid sci-fi plot with surprising maturity

Yeahhhhh, no.

Years later I still can't understand what the fuck was going on in the movie

It was boring. Too boring for sci-fi fans, too shallow for Final Fantasy fans. Take away the title and the gimmick, make it live action, and you've got a generic 90s sci-fi Alec Baldwin vehicle destined for the bargain bin.

The biggest problems are the forced humor (Buscemi's character, shitty dialogue), unnatural character interactions/movement, and tonal inconsistencies that all give it the stench of a distinctly Japanese production trying to appeal to dumb Americans. It didn't work out for either party obviously.

When this came out 90% of people thought FF7 was the only game or that the previous games were direct prequels. They fully expected Advent Children.

never underestimate the monkey levels of idiocy that a japanese rpg fan will devolve to when it comes to fangirling user

>too shallow for Final Fantasy fans
my sides

It's true. Nerd culture was still pretty niche at the time and nobody cared about a Final Fantasy movie.
Release the exact same movie today and I'm sure it would do great

this plain and simple senpai

The ending really stuck with me. I'm a fucking sucker for a tragedy.

I member I bought a freaking shiny dvd edition of this at the time and I thought that dream sequence in pic related was so kino... Highshcool man...

The young version of me wanted a movie with Cloud and Squall against Sephiroth, not this sci-fi shit.

name a better movie tie-in product

I knew about the watch but what's the one on the right? Also this.

It's the one in the movie.

...

I thought it was boring as fuck as a kid when it first came out and I haven’t watched it since

/thread

it had nothing to do with FF

>mfw I found out these things were real and I could own one after seeing this
They got me good

FF has nothing to do with FF

Final Fantasy

This

Even the new Final Fantasy movie looks stupid. And CGI has improved a lot between these two. They need to find some way to stylize the CGI so it doesn't look so unnatural. Disney and Pixar need to do the same. Their CGI looks uninspired and stupid.

All those feather haired sword wielding protags sure are different.

every FF game has elements that appear in each installment. spirits had none.

Mongoloid detected. Square have mastered the art of making CG characters that are attractive to both western and Jap audiences at the same time, nothing abut it looks jank.

youtube.com/watch?v=ytgMszpX4L4

I think this might be close to truth. People who didn't know the game series were thinking what a stupid name it is and people who did know the series were expecting something like FF7.

I can't think of a single one that covers all FF games

>Cid
>Lifestream
>Not FF

I watched this again a while back and at times I was amazed how realistic it looked. Then something little happened, like a badly done movement, facial animation or something, and I was snapped out from it.

this, and a shit plot. i wish they had made a movie similar to titan a.e. with the same cgi aesthetics.

final fantasy games in general are highly overrated too, i mean quite literally they are supposed to be in the same universe but none of the stories make any sense in regards to each other. try explaining the plot of ff8 to a normal person without confusing him/her.

>4 minute video with almost no facial animation
you really made me think

Hot take: V is the best.

>attractive to both western and Jap audiences
you know what, you made me think again

>>Incredible CGI that was nothing short of miraculous at the time of release

>every planet has a "spirit"
>when you die, your soul becomes part of this "spirit"
>aliens blew up their planet
>chunk'o'alien planet (complete with sliver of alien planet "spirit") crashes into earth
>alien soul/ghosts roam around
>alien souls are not compatible with human and so are lethal
>need to collect energy, or something, to create a harmonic signature and neutralize alien souls
>Final Fantasy: Ghostbuster Edition

what is this?

>i mean quite literally they are supposed to be in the same universe

Retard alert. Fuck off, stupid.

Talking about FF is boring. Literally everything about the frachise has been said and the conversations have been rehashed over and over again. Even this statement isn't original.

Remember when THAT was FF only problem and this movie was their only "mistake"?

>Squenix can't do facial animation
youtube.com/watch?v=8NCdyIjY71Y
My neurons are racing

the games are all self contained and don't exist in the same universe, unless you count the void from FFV connecting the various games, even though thats mostly a meme to explain gilgamesh and maybe dissidia, if anything its a multiverse with very little crossover

It was a great film, I really enjoyed it back then.

not a bad looking, watch 2 BEE frank

youtube.com/watch?v=rsPq2qp_Z-E

i think you mean blizzard m8

youtube.com/watch?v=TLzhlsEFcVQ

>that are attractive to both western and Jap audiences
You mean to jap audiences and weebshits. I can guarantee you that the art direction looks very strange to an average westerner. You just can't see it because you spent your life surrounded by animu shit.

Also, I see the exact same problems in the animation that Advent Children had. It just looks weird as fuck and you simply can't identify with the characters. They look like lifeless wax figures. I absolutely disagree with though, Pixar solved that problem by heavy stylizing the animation. They simply don't even try to close in on uncanny valley, they simply stay the fuck away from it and I think that's a very good idea. I can't say it looks uninspired and stupid and I have no idea how anyone can come to this conclusion. They pretty much invented their art style and it is quite universally very well-received.

Blizz are great too.

The other released final fantasy games weren't scifi movies with a boring story.
As a vidyagame fan the movie felt like it had nothing to do with the game series so you felt very disappointed watching it.

>A solid sci-fi plot with surprising maturity

Yeah no there wasn't any plot.
And this movie was just Sony tricking Squaresoft to their death to be sure they would never have the independance to go elsewhere. Square-Enix is still Sony's bitch today even with their trash games that don't sell.

Most Final Fantasy games had scifi elements and a worse story than the movie.

It's good when compared with other CGI animation. But that's not my problem with it. Uncanny valley. That's my problem with this. They're trying to animate a human face, but with today's technology you simply can't. A human face is too complex and humans are too good at reading facial expression. They should use simpler character design or lay off the CGI movies until facial animation reaches the point where it becomes bearable to look at.

The tech has been there for years though. Even fucking LA Noire managed it, on a PS3 no less, although granted they used some wizardry that cost them so much money they don't use it in other games.

And yet Rogue One with its $200,000,000 budget couldn't manage to make convincing CGI

Niggers literally ruin everything

CGI humans alongside actual humans is harder to pull off to be fair. Honestly I thought the fabric on his uniform was the weakest part of the illusion.
>Being threatened by CG men
wew lad

yeh but this is good cgi

>good
not good enough though

I was talking about nigger THICC shit which has totally undermined skinny women culture in America. Before people were fat but kindof ashamed. Now they're fat and can rationalize it as, "hey, some guys like it!"

Fuck off Patrick.

We apparently watched two different movies

whoever made that gif must be a fag

Not really. Some expressions where really really weird. The subtleties of human movement and facial expresions are still not 100% feacibles. There are so many involuntary movements and whatnot.

The only reason movies like planet of the apes can get away with it is because we don´t spend all our time with apes and are acostumed to see how they really behave and move.
Same with aliens or fantasy creatures. You can pretty much sell those by nailing weights and believable mechanics. Humans are a different story, you see humans every day, how the eyes move, how exactly they reflect light, how they make involuntary movements and whatnot.

Recreating all those micro actions may be possible yes... but it would cost a fucking ton and it would ultimately be disregarded most times because that´s how it´s supposed to look.

I watched this with my family when I was about 10. Everyone else hated it, I was completely blown away.
12 years later it's one of the only kinos I own a physical copy of and everyone else still hates it. Why isn't it a cult classic by now?

>Why isn't it a cult classic by now?
Because beyond its pioneering value, it's simply a bad movie.

Pretty much this, it came at a time where FF was pretty much known only for the FFVII release, and FFIII(VI) from SNES, the movie was to sci-fi looking to be an adaptation to a series like FF, trailer looked like some sort of Starship Troopers CGI movie with marines agains weird alien beings, so yeah, it was destined to flop, I really enjoyed it to be hones, but in no way feels like it has any relations to the FF franchise to date
