Fixing the X-Men

Let's say Marvel hires you tomorrow to fix the X-Men. (think DC Rebirth in response to the New 52)

In the current world of Marvel comics:
Where should the X-Men -- and mutants -- be in the greater Marvel landscape? Any big picture ideas?
How many books (solo & team) should there be?
How many teams should there be in-universe?
What kind of writers / artists would you be hiring?

i would basically copy the early 90's formula, 2 books, a blue and gold team. it would focus on mutant hating shit or cosmic shiaar shit. id have little interaction with other non mutant supers. no crossover VS titles. id also love a age of apocalypse ongoing, but thast just a fantasy of mine

>Where should the X-Men -- and mutants -- be in the greater Marvel landscape? Any big picture ideas?

The way they're shoe-horning new Inhumans into everything makes me really wish it was mutants.

I know there's already *enough* mutant but I'd rather have more mutants than forgotten mutants AND forced, tryhard boring inhumans

Kick it off with an event that has the world finally come to term with mutants, so that the X-Men can, for once, operate without the hated and feared stigma.

Main Book would be Uncanny X-Men, which would be about the New Mutants finally becoming the main X-Men and running the school. Lot of students as side characters.

Running parallel to this would be the Hellfire Club, essentially a villain book to complement the hero book, with frequent crossovers. I'm not sure about the queens, but the White King would be Warren Worthington III, and the Black King would be a masked figure eventually revealed to be Sunspot.

Meanwhile Excalibur would be revived, and be about a bunch of the classic Claremont characters (Cyke, Kitty, Nightcrawler, Longshot, Storm, Havok, maybe Spiral?) going on cosmic adventures, doing dimensional shit, and generally mucking around with stuff outside of Earth.

X-Factor would focus on a nice blend of OCs, some of Kyle and Yost's New X-Men and some other X-Students who have shown up (maybe Armor?) Book would be about a new SHIELD program started to train mutants instead of rejecting them.

X-Force would pretty much stay classic X-Force: Dirty violent missions that still need doing in this post-mutant acceptance world. Cable, Domino, Psylocke, Wolverine and maybe some oddball choices like Forge, Sunfire and Skids.

New Mutants would be about some grown-up mutants who've had trouble with their powers (Iceman, Rogue, others) touring around places whree mutant acceptance is still controversial, helping out young mutants who still need it.

>Where should the X-Men -- and mutants -- be in the greater Marvel landscape? Any big picture ideas?
First order of business: get rid of Bendis’ time travel 05. Twist: They’re not from the past, they’re some alt universe evil sleeper agents that come from a world where mutants drove humans to extinction and now they’ve come here for the long con to incite gene warfare. They die or get erased from existence in some mini series but ending implies there’s young, evil versions of the original All-New, All-Different team out there too with a young, walking evil Xavier.

I couldn’t ignore AvX, Civil War 2, IvX and all the shittiness that’s happened, so I’d have to come up with some ass-pull that brings Cyclops back to life. He’ll remember all of it, so he’s not coming back to fuck around. He’s still Rightclops and he’s still the savior of the mutant race. He definitely considers the Inhuman Royal Family to be enemies … but he’s not going to go all “Hitler” on kid Inhumans like Moon Girl or Ms Marvel. It is specially a vendetta against the Royals. Build to an Imperial Guard vs Royals vs X-Men/Starjammer mega event.

Because of the last decade of events, the X-Men are back to being outliers within the MU. Outsiders. Number 1 on SHIELD’s watch list. Uneasiness with the Avengers. And Secret Empire & CW2 will help knock the Avengers’ egos down a few pegs and give Cyke a chance to be haughty.

I guess Wolverine comes back from the dead. Have the Hand resurrect him. Send him down a solo path for awhile to “find himself.”

They should fight problems like an evil mutant telepath becoming dictator of a third world country, and using his telepathy to eliminate dissent and win elections by super high margins.
they could add some complexity by making that dictator an ally of the USA, because he has adamantium or vibranium mines and he sells it to the USA military complex, in the same way Saudi Arabia is evil and an American ally.

So they may fight against that dictator, and SHIELD who supports the dictator in secret.

Basically, imagine mutants really existed? what problems would it create? write about that

The X-Men would recognize they were better off in less public roles. They would focus on hiding, mitigating or even suppressing detrimental mutations and training those who have useful powers. Their main mission would effectively be to hide new mutants from the public to prevent them from hurting people or being hurt by those around them.

There would be three team books. X-Factor for the teachers, X-Men for the student body and X-Force is for combat specialists.

I would put out minis in an attempt to find a new character that is popular enough and later make a two character team book similar to Cable and Deadpool with the most promising candidates. If they gain enough traction then, I would put them into solos.

>How many teams should there be in-universe?
In spite of the execution, Schism had a good idea with the Extinction team AND the School. I wouldn’t make them at odds though. There would be the School as a sanctuary for mutants. And the “Extinction” team would be the big, pro-active superheroes that get involved in major crossovers and travel the galaxy. Deal with the Omega level threats (Shiar, Phoenix, Apocalypse, Savage Land)

The school wouldn’t necessarily be a bunch of new teenager faces. Some amalgam of Gen X and Yost & Kyle’s New X-Men adopting the X-Corps idea that Grant came up with. Young peacekeepers who rescue scared mutants in need

X-Force would stick around as the lethal black ops team that deals with the real “hate and fear us” enemies like Weapon X, Church of Humanity, Genosha

I’d want to bring back the Brotherhood in a big way. Cyclops is willing to fight for survival by any means necessary but Magneto wants to fight for superiority. The divide is between those Cyke’s side wanting a sovereign mutant state and Mag’s side wants a *takeover.*

Jean is dead and is not coming back except for very very rare “Phoenix assumes a human form” cosmic angel kind of way. Maybe she’s only visible to Franklin Richards.

I don’t know how I feel about Xavier coming back from the dead. Remender’s “brain of Professor X” idea grew on me. I like the idea that his telepathic consciousness is out there somewhere in the Shadow Realm and he communicates with Cyclops and Magneto - and only them - in a spiritual form.

I also want to do something with Fantastic Four. In my “X-Men rebirth” idea, Marvel is unclenching its buttonhole somewhat even though movie synergy is still the company m.o. The Fox stuff is allowed to exist in its own corner, and I’d want to include F$ somehow (admittedly, I like the way Hickman sent the Future Foundation off to re-build the Multiverse in Secret War. I would almost hate to disrupt it.) If Reed & Sue, Franklin & Valeria and the students were off limits, I’d build to their return in a way that unites the X-Men, Phoenix, Inhumans and a big cosmic event. In the meantime, I like the idea that Johnny rebuilds the F4 because “there needs to be a Fantastic Four to protect the universe” so he and Ben recruit Beast to be their scientist adventurer (I love classic Beast but he needs to fuck off from X-drama for awhile). Rounding at the team would be … Carol Danvers. Good way to mix Agent Brand & SWORD (and Alpha Flight) into the mix.

Hey is girlverine decent yet?

>in the same way Saudi Arabia is evil and an American ally.

No. KSA is an American ally because a) it was an American ally in the Cold War against the USSR's ally: Nasser's Egypt. b) post-Cold War it was part of the American ME Security Triangle that included Turkey and Egypt. It's just that radical Islam has been considered a lesser evil to socialism and communism.

Put the X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D. together in their own universe.

Everything should come to a head and Marvel should finally reveal the BigBad "SJW" secret behind every storyline that's happened in the X-Men books since Uncanny #1.

Professor X's greatest crime,
Scott's motive for murder and madness,
Emma's true identity,
What was done to Bobby Drake and Hank McCoy,
Magneto's secret backstory,
The origin of Hope,
How The Phoenix is ties into it all,
Why Cassandra Nova, Onslaught, and "The Entity" exist,
And even why Storm sees Xavier's ghost...

It's all connected.
I kinda want to see Jessica Jones break it wide open in her book.

I literally have no face right now

>How many books (solo & team) should there be?
Team:
- Ultimate X-men by Al Ewing: The Omega Level Team - Cyclops, Storm (these two are at odds), Emma Frost, Colossus, Psylocke, Archangel, Morph and Blink

Solo
- Wolverine: Set in Madripoor, featuring Jubilee and Gambit as supporting characters
Foes: The Hand, Lady Deathstrike & the Reavers, Silver Ronin

- Deadpool: It’s Deadpool

Depending on stability/sales:
- New Mutants: classic team in time for Fox movie (Cannonball are Sunspot are still involved Avengers stuff at this point) - Mooonstar, Warlock & Cypher, Karma, Magik and Legion
Foes: Dark Nate Grey, Demon Bear, N'astirh, Belasco, the Ani-Mators

- X-Factor: fuck what they did to Madrox, bring him back and make X-Factor Investigations a series of street level, quirky mini-series - Madrox, Siryn, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, Longshot and Doop
Foes: Mesmero, Moses Magnum, Arcade

- Excalibur: Not totally x-related but there’s so much great Captain Britain Corps & Marvel UK lore + it should be a gonzo quasi-Exiles comedy book - Kitty Pryde w/ Lockheed, Nightcrawler, Rachel Grey, Chamber, Banshee (Captain Britain is their Professor X; Pete Wisdom guest stars)
Foes: Mojo, Sugar Man

time travel wankery, and eliminate everything that happened specifically to mutants after M-Day.

inhumans are still result of kree gene editing. yet instead of terrigen mists appearing out of fucking no where and making new inhumans. people get tested for the gene and voluntarily decide to become inhumans or not. though sometimes, someone does dose unwilling people.

mutants and their X gene just happen as of puberty, or cases like deadpool.

mutant hate isn't nearly as bad as it used to be.

x men mutants don't get into constant conflicts with other groups of good guys. because good guys fighting each other constantly is stupid.

JEEEEEAAAAANNNNNNN! and the Phoenix restored mutant births stopped by Wanda.

at least one book is written like a cute girls doing cute things cutely manga.

rest of the books are about different xmen teams all over the earth. keeping the hard won peace and protecting mutants from hate.

I like the idea of rebooting from scratch in their own dimension/earth where there are no super heroes. Just mutants, humans, super tech and aliens.

good shit

okay continuing from DOX-IVX we do an event mini where a new villain (maybe Professor X from when he faked his death in the 60's) gets rid of all the time displaced characters forever for now.

>The X-Men (Cyclops,Wolverine,Storm, Beast,Gambit, Rogue, Phoenix,)
Watcher Fury has Forget-Me-Not steal Cyclops' body before he dies and cures his M-Pox and stupid thing bendis did to his Optic Blast, Fury informs Scott that some aliens from across the galaxy have stolen the Phoenix Egg during the incursion (since the events on battleworld didn't happen) so he needs the X-Men to go stop them from hatching the thing, So Cyclops has to assemble a team of X-Men to save Jean in an extended space arc fighting new aliens, the Shi-Ar and crossover with GOTG

get rid of OML
-definitely- get rid of O5
bring back dark beast

have one or two x-men titles. put some mutants with other teams or form their own organizations with other heroes, they don't have to be mutants with other mutants. they could be working for shield to get training and intel to so they can meet up with other mutants from different groups to compare notes

mutants should be pairing up and starting families

focus should be on storytelling and character development. if that means going to outer space or mojoworld or some alternate timeline all the better. also 's first suggestion

i could have sworn that phoenix destroyed a planet on its way to earth around the time of messiah complex or towards the end of it. if that's true, there ought to be consequences so such an "epic" event has literary meaning

>rebirth

yeah no. that's not going to work. that's not how marvel fans roll. what i've seen of ultimate x-men was horrible. starting over is definitely a bad decision

I take Nick Lowe and bring him home to Office-X.
I rehire Spurrier.
I kill Tom Brevoort to try and attempt to rehire Memender.
I rehire Carey.
I rehire Wells.
I keep letting Bunn do whatever it is that he's doing.

I put a moratorium on X-Men inclusion in big events.
I publish an anthology series that ships monthly and follows single characters or small groups of them (basically Unlimited). This is where you'll get to see those characters you always wonder where they've fucked off to. Rotating team of authors pulled from the x-bullpen. Full of one-shots, but also use it to pitch new arcs for the core ongoings.
I publish the Summers family vacation book.
I bring back the X-Over.
I mandate a 4 year plan with a small X-over every ~16 months between 2-3 titles, as well as two big line-wide X-overs at ~24 and 48.
The big story will weave in and around Apocalypse and the Phoenix.
Lots of big damn hero moments.
A SHOCKING betrayal.
Nostalgia!
Romance!
Murder...?

Remender on Uncanny, with Mark Brooks and Bachalo on rotating art.
Spurrier on X-Force
Bunn on some "rejects" team.
Carey on Summers Family Vacation. This is where the BIG THREAT will be revealed and generally be the "world-building" title. It will end after the first X-over and be replaced by a sort of team-building book. Replete with TRAINING MONTAGES and DRAMA.
Wells on something akin to New Mutants, but mostly younger muties.
All 5 will be on "Unlimited"
Potentially publish 3-4 solos--and a Prophet solo, even if he isn't X, he's one of the coolest new characters under the X-banner in the last decade.
Push 2ish high profile minis each year. Guest authors and the best art talent we can afford.
Not sure if it would work, but I'd love to see the final event culminate in an ambitious AoA style line-wide retitling.

Give Rachel Grey a make-or-break run. After Excalibur, which isn't exactly iconic in the eyes of the masses, there isn't really a "definitive" run, and she needs one.
