Dystopian films

Making a chart of essential dystopian films

what should I add/remove?

maybe this, maybe Taxi Driver, all in all a good chart OP

+Strange Days or Johnny Mnemonic
- Wall-E

is this really a dystopian film? doesnt seem like it

added

THX and Logan's Run

logans run is on there already

World on a Wire

A Boy and His Dog.
The second half anyway.

boy and his dog is post apoc not dystopian

...

excellent

bump?

>Blade Runner
>Dystopia

More like a heterotopia

Mad max original trilogy and Fury Road

Idiocracy
District 9
The Island
Cant miss Mad Max or Planet of the apes series
Chappie
The Postman
Its kinda hard defining dystopia. its pretty hand in hand with apocalypse..
I am Legend?
28 Days/Weeks?
Do you class cartoons? Akira.
Kids movies? City of ember.
Multipass?
Turkey Shoot and the hunger games?
The Purge series?
The Road
Surrogates.
Ill admit I went through a list to jog my memory for the second half there..

post apoclypse =/= dystopia

I might make a chart for that another time

Add:
Never Let Me Go
The Lobster
Sex Mission
THX-1138

la jetée
snowpiercer
stalker
metropolis
alphaville

Hillary Clinton's Inauguration (2017)

here is the list so far

V for Vendetta

I didn't know there was an 1980 adaptation of Brave New World. Is it any good? I've only seen the one from '98.

escape from New York?

Total Recall

overated tranny lesbian film

Remove Equilibrium. Yeah it was cool when we were 14 but the movie seriously isn't that good even the fight scenes don't hold up.

replaced it with escape from new york

still have two slots, maybe I'll ad another row if more are suggested, then I'll try and pretty it up and add names

Equals (2015)

Rollerball
Demolition Man
possibly Naked Lunch and Dark City

Repo Men fits but I'm not sure I'd call it essential.

The aesthetic was cool though.

-Johnny Mneumonic (Not a good movie, but the setting is interesting)
-Starship Troopers
-Total Recall
-The Maze Runner+The Scorch Trials
-Demolition Man

If The Giver movie were as good as the book, then I'd tell you to include it.

Keep Wall-E son

>not a good movie

I only want good movies on this list (at least generally considered to be good)

Meant to use - as bullet points for movies you should add, btw.

Then Johnny needs to come off. I love the setting, but that movie is garbage.

Also probably replace the Stallone Dredd with the Karl Urban one.

Idiocracy qualifies, IMO

Might want to get one of the Neil Blomkamp movies on there... take your pick, they're fairly interchangeable and mostly deal with the same small subset of themes.

>computer randomly shuts off for no reason
>lost a ton of progress

at least it's not too bad but damn that scared me. maybe my PSU is starting to go.

DAMNIT IT HAPPENED AGAIN

Check your power cable connections, I freaked out thinking I was going to have to replace some shit and it turned out to be just a slightly loose 4-pin, not even a 5 minute fix.

Remove Surrogates, it has an interesting premise but it's a pretty weak movie. For a slightly better movie with a similar premise, add eXistenZ.

Add:
Demolition Man
Battle Royale or The Hunger Games
Planet Of The Apes
V For Vendetta

Optional:
If we're counting anime, add Ghost In The Shell and Akira
Add Escape From New York and Escape From LA

Is 12 Monkeys dystopian? It seems more post-apocalyptic than anything.

Fuck, I knew there was something else major I was forgetting.

Deathrace 2000

Also, what's the general consensus on No Escape? It's basically a ripoff of EFNY but I liked it.

Soldier is probably also in the ballpark but that's another questionable.

> It seems more post-apocalyptic than anything.

true. Will save that for my apoc chart

>Deathrace 2000
>demolition man

dredd and running man are already on there, idk

Add

Children of men
13 monkeys

are you blind or retarded

You swapped out Stalone's Dredd didn't you? And besides, Demolition Man's an entirely different kind of dystopia.

Deathrace 2000 should get some consideration for being a cult classic and coming first IMHO. If you start docking flicks for having the same plot elements, it's going to end up a real short list.

...And you can never have too much Stallone.

It's not supposed to be a huge list, just the essentials, I want variety my dude.

30 films is enough for me

Total Recall ?

Metropolis is utopian fiction, the exact opposite of what you're listing.

...

fair point

already on the list

Neither unlike you....

This fucking computer keeps shutting off randomly.

gonna have to call it a night. I need to crack this baby open in the morning to figure out why it keeps shitting itself. Keep making suggestions, I'll see them tomorrow (hopefully)

By short list I meant you'd almost have to cut at least half your current entries for being derivative. There is no new thing under the sun.
What's considered essentially is going to vary somewhat individually too obviously.

Another one I'd forgotten that I would consider essential but you might not is Sleeper.

Yeah its a little tricky defining..

This is why I didnt pick it from the list I looked up.Yeah gotta keep the comedy genre covered too.

Need POTA for sure. and Akira at least.

Your on track, pick the best of the ones suggested.

This need a spot for sure.

This guys on it, the list will be totally subjectual to each persons taste, for example someone running the hard core line would say no to some that others would argue need to be on there.

Dark city really needs to be on this list, as well as the first Terminator (at least). Blindness is also OK.

I guess it would really depend on the definition of "dystopia" which you consider relevant. If it's the core meaning, "a place that is not good, a frightening place" (as an antonym of utopia), then the list can go on much further.
For instance, you could include The crow, since its atmosphere and the nature of its world is that of total dread, violence and despair.

Soylent Green should have a disclaimer that it actually isn't a comedy. It just hasn't aged well.
