I didnt read the book and i watched both films. The original is the superior version but the american one its not that bad.

One thing I think the remake did better (though I havent seen it since release so im not sure) is that the relation with her guardian felt more tragic.

Yeah, the original didn't deal with Eli's and Håkan's relationship much at all but I felt that Reeves used too much exposition to inform the audience. The photostrip was enough to tell peole that the two had been together since he was a child. The "Maybe I'm getting too old. Maybe I want to get caught" (paraphrasing) was a bit much.
